Not liking this. The vision for the core gaming audience will probably be compromised. Facebook is just interested in the short cheap games that make the moneys

Or just gobbling up tech to resell later at inflated values when Facebook the website starts going the way of MySpace.

I wonder if they've tried to buy Valve yet. Steam is extremely valuable, so they probably want to get in on it.

Company bought by a billionaire gamer who knows 100% what the piece of equipment is capable of? Sounds fuckin' great to me. As well the only billionaire who has been a one-trick-pony unlike other recent splurges of industry bigshots like Elon Musk, being part of 3 different companies worth hundreds of millions; I guess Zuckerberg wants to start becoming more than just facebook. I'm actually kind of eager to see what comes of this.

You guys realize this means incredibly efficient developing with their assets right? Oculus has been running on investment for a long time now, if FB is smart they'll not let it sit idle and collect dust.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Valve's VR set is the one you all would buy anyways.

ibwtf i thought facebook was basically just a porn site now

wat?

And this news is extremely disappointing. Instead of taking their vision all the way, they fucking sell out. ESPECIALLY to Facebook. Very very disappointing. I wouldn't have been as upset if it was even to EA or something, but Facebook...*sigh*

Mark Zuckerberg bought Oculus since he was denied from the closed beta.

And I quote "Fuck it. I'll just buy it."

I get that Facebook can be shady, but they can't possibly mess up the Oculus after it has already come so far, can they? The technology isn't going to get worse. Even if it does become a tool for social media, I don't see how that would make it a worse product for gaming. Maybe I'm missing something, I dunno.

From the article:

Update: We're on the call now, and Mark Zuckerberg is already pointing out Facebook's acquisition of Instagram as an example of how the company is getting experience buying properties and allowing them to continue to operate independently. Zuckerberg called out virtual reality as one of the computing platforms of the future -- following desktops and mobile -- and yes, talked about building Facebook's advertising into it. Specifically, he talked about the potential of a virtual communication network, buying virtual goods, and down the line, advertising.

Nah I'm out

Dark days are ahead.

RIP the Oculus dream.

Someone on Reddit pointed out that John Carmack is basically the canary in the coalmine now. If we see him leave, we know for a fact that this has gone to the shitter...but we can assume that anyway.

<_<

i also doubt this will be as bad as the bandwagon is claiming. unless facebook adds artificial barriers, assuming facebook is looking into creating telepresence or something, nothing is stopping you from just changing the input to the oculus at the application layer and making it work for games. facebook may do some douchey things, but I doubt they'll fuck this up even remotely as badly as people are thinking.
