How did you get into competitive TF2?

As much as it makes me cry myself to sleep every night, I first got into comp by watching stabby's stream back around april 2013. I was a steel spy main, but I saw the error of my ways last summer and am now a shitty open roamer. I can only hope that the patented "8 hours a day of mge until you dont suck" strategy can make me not shitty.

I was a simple pub idiot, watched STAR_ vids, etc. I knew that comp tf2 existed, wasn't interested. I watched frag movies and stuff. When ToTH came along I watched the mge event, and thought that it looked awesome. At that time I was also introduced to tf2lobby. So I played, was pissed that I sucked at 6s, and played mge, which I was also bad at. This frustration lead me to want to keep playing, and become less awful. I guess I'm still bad at both, but not as bad as when I started. HL never interested me, I hate engis.

I was asked on the day of the season for ugc hl starting to play medic for my friends team, I did, I was awful at it as I had like zero experience prior, but it made me want to keep playing after seeing players that were way better than I was.

I was bored at the time and was browsing youtube for some tf2 videos. I was unaware of comp at the time, and the I came across CUBE's ETF2L Highlander Challenge Frag Video. That pretty much hooked me :3

Played competitive TFC from 99-05. My teammates and I from the same clan decided we wanted to pursue TF2 competitively, and a few of us got in the beta. Been playing off and on since then whenever i actually have time to commit...still enjoy both playing and watching the game this many years later.

rhodora from the weeabootique/headset radio asked me to play on a 6s team with him around late 2011 which led me to play with people from that server who were also already in 6s/interested in 6s such as fred dawes, geoff,a little girl, imouto, bolwind, sacrilege, ghos7 and tony swan.

Well i didnt expect this thread to live, yay for quality threads.

I'll throw in my 2cents
I was pubbing on the skeptical gaming server playing standin(3 points at once map) as scout and always enjoyed having these small rivalries with other players on the server, some guy named sky_ joined and destroyed me, to which i asked in game chat how he was so good and he just said he plays comp in open.
I like sky_, he doesn't know i exist. But it was pleasant and is the reason im a

I saw a cast of a game of Blight versus some team, no idea who. I then proceeded to Google "how to join blight". it didn't work. i don't know what happened next.

I got into plying jump maps after finding the BBHoD server. After getting decent at jumping, I found a few videos on competitive, and it made me want to play roamer. About 300 lobbies later, a guy happened to be my medic while I pocketed. Neither of us had mics at the time, but we played well together and he ended up recruiting me for an iron team. Ended up getting hooked on comp and still play it a year later today.

back in early 2008, i joined a pub clan with members that were also involved in 6v6. they showed me #tf2.gather.us and i started to only play pickup games. i never really liked the idea of having a practice schedule. as a result, i've only played 3 full seasons in 6 years. i'm still around doing the same things today: backup for teams, play pugs and shitpost on the forums. i still like improving my game but fuck scrimming 5 days a week.

I remember when all I used to do was pub Freight when it was still a custom map and I looked up some video of like the ultimate Freight strats and found this video which was like a few days old at the time. Looked at the rest of the channel and I was like 'Wow this game has competitive?'

The next day I'm trawling the streets for some Freight action when I see a locked server called like 'Milk Clan Competitive Server', and I'm thinking 'holy shit, maybe I can get on and ask if I can join a team?'. After three guesses I manage to crack the complex password that was 'milk'. I join the defending team, they're on last and they have two men down, the other team just finished their uber and is headed for point. I go on Pyro, I walk out, kill the Demoman - my adopted teammates are pushing hard in the paint for the frags while the other team rages over text chat. I airblast a Soldier to death, I taunt, and I get flattened by a train, before being banned.

I later tried adding them all to Steam but they never accepted.

PS thats the pinnacle of my venerable competitive career

I stumbled upon the Tf2 mixup and saw PYYYOUR, the shout casters he was one of the best in the world. I started watching demos of Highlander, then went on reddit to look for a team (Lawl) I got offered a position on New Era and went 4-4, this upcoming season will be my 3rd

As for 6s I avoided that like the plague. I didn't know what to make off it, I started shitting bricks if I got into a lobby one like that. I then started to Mge and watch a lot of demos, from there I picked up the game sense of everything. Now all I do is Pug 6s :p

He might read this, so blame erkston

He picked me up on his Iron HL team early of last year, and I kind of just branched off from there.

Before that I mostly watched casts and found out about comp tf2 through a friend that was being mentored.
