TF2Center: thoughts?

I saw this on /r/tf2 and I thought it looked pretty cool and clean: http://www.reddit.com/r/tf2/comments/17xjzh/tf2centers_design_so_far_how_do_you_like_it_rtf2/c89qhx3

It pretty much looks like a Tf2lobby knockoff, but I feel like it's about time a new client has popped up, and this one looks nice so far. What do you guys think?

I'm especially excited for actual consequences for abusive and disruptive players, because the crap we've all dealt with in Tf2lobby is just awful.

Interested to see how they actually rank players, since a number of people think its impossible to rank players using numbers alone.

DrPloxotoo much gullywash.

I just noticed the Gullywash maps LOL. I think ranking players might be hard but giving "badges" or "awards" might be a good alternative.

Like a badge for playing 100 lobbies, 500 lobbies, etc. and a badge for playing scout for a number of lobbies, demoman for a number of lobbies. This would give others an idea of what your main class is and a rough estimate of your experience with competitive games, etc.

The one thing they left out are ads. I know they'll make the site look atrocious and most of us probably use adblock, but they are going to need some ad revenue to run the website.

UI looks nice (aside from awful colors IMO. Though maybe I shouldn't be one to say that). Wonder how much of the site is actually complete though, as that's what really counts.

I wonder if I should work on a lobby system for my own site after midterm weeks.

How many different lobby websites are being worked on now? Wouldn't it be a lot more effective if they all just worked on a single site? Even if all the separate sites are actually completed at some point, the community will probably just gravitate towards one and the others will be kind of useless.

It's better if they all make their own idea of the "best" lobby site. That way, we can find what works and what doesn't, and maybe we can take the good stuff from each.

That's competition for you. Also, plenty of them are in different languages (TronPaul's is flask/python, I'm using php/python, dunno what TF2center is). Different work ethics/schedules (I'm not personally prioritizing the site ever since I started school, only dedicating weekends where I'm at my dorm to work on it), different goals (I'm working on queues before a lobby system). I personally wouldn't want to work with someone who took that long just to get a UI out with nothing else to show. Plus the dealing with all the different components and what not, aesthetic conflicts, blah blah blah.

That's only assuming it's open source or someone's willing to recode the feature.

It looks exactly like TF2Lobby to me. Would be neat if it works out though, I guess.

Honestly, I don't care how it looks, I care if it works better than TF2Lobby.

My personal views on his "progress of features":

Lots of lobbies

Lobbies will come if the players are there. This hasn't been a problem before, so I don't see it being one now.

Lots of stock lobbyservers: anyone can host a lobby now!

This can be nice, I guess, but not a big deal by any means.

Decent reporting system

This is one of the more promising things because TF2Lobby's reporting system is absolute shit. For example, under the current system, if a substitute doesn't show up, you can't report him.

No more high-ping players ruining your lobby...

Not only do I oppose this idea, but I know enough to understand that a flawless execution would be near impossible.

Measures for abuse and disruptive gameplay

Moderation could be good, under the conditions that they are indifferent and that they don't ban people for minor issues.

Daily tournaments featuring lots of prizes to win

Don't really care.

What I see is a mock-up of the site's layout and a bunch of promised features, most of which listed as in-progress and not yet implemented. We can't really tell if it will be better than TF2Lobby because the main problems with TF2Lobby are instability and bugs, not a lack of features.

would love to be able to unlock some badges like play 50 lobbies as demoman or 100 as scout, or get an average k/d of over 2.5 etc :)

badges sound like a really dumb idea because they would encourage people playing the same class over and over all the time and getting rewarded for it

TF2 should stop rewarding people for practicing the same class over and over since they get better at that class, amirite?

how fun do you think a lobby would be for someone completely new to the game when there's someone leagues better than him completely shitting on him and his team?

I don't care if people play the same class, just don't encourage it too much by adding badges

That's the point of adding rankings/ratings/elo. If you see the other team has a way higher ratings than you, you either don't play or accept that fact you're going to be playing with better players. Also, you're suppose to specialize in a class eventually, so there's really no problem with encouraging people to do it. I really don't understand what's your problem with people playing a class they have fun with and trying to get better at it. I mean offclassing in pugs in general turns into a shitfest (pyro/engy/heavy trolling, amazing sniper that's crap scout, etc. Unless you "offclass" to another main 6's class, in which you're being a hypocrite).

Quake live has a really good ranking system. Is that based completely off numbers? I bet a slimier thing could be implemented.

I feel like individual DM is a lot more important in Quake than it is in TF2.

Quake is about spatial control just like TF2 is, the difference is that it's so much more personal and occurs in more interesting space then "you have some chokes here".
Rockets are mathematically easier to get direct hits with in Q3 than TF2, but they don't have the same utility in the times they are easier to hit like that; the LG outclasses it most of the time.
The matchmaking in QL is alright but it does have problems; I played FFA all the time and I got stuck between the two top public matchmaking tiers for months, so I would literally be juggled between the best of the pubs and people who I would absolutely destroy.

Quake matchmaking:

Able to hit rockets and at least 15% LG = tier 4

Possibly using a fighting game pad instead of a mouse = tier 1-3

It's nothing special or intuitive and it's worthless

I think I'd be good if they could possibly add some kind of function to link a player's ugc/esea/etf2l profile, so you can have more information about who you're playing with and against

other than that, it looks like it'll easily replace lobby, especially if it's moderated halfway decently
