so, yesterday this kid who lives up the hill from my house went to my brother's house and knocked on the door asking for food. his family is pretty poor so my brother just gave him a couple cans of random food and sent him away. (my brother lives next door to me) a few hours later, he comes back and asks if he can use a can opener, and my brother just says sure and goes to get it out of the kitchen

this kid, he's like 14 years old i think? he is also really slow in the head. he has trouble talking and forming thoughts, which is probably why he couldn't grasp why the following is unacceptable behavior. He justlet's himself in my brother's house as he goes into the kitchen to get a can opener, and starts going through the desk in my brother's living room and was taking the cigarette butts out of the ash tray and just pocketing them. Needless to say that's pretty fucking weird, and my brother caught him doing it and told him to get out.

After that, michael (the kid's name) just walks into my brother's house. Doesn't knock, doesn't say anything, just walks in and sits on his couch. this was about half an hour after he asked for the can opener. My brother's dog starts freaking out about it and claws the kid, and then he bit my brother's dog and my brother had to pick him up and carry him out of the house. he told him if he came back he'd call the cops (which is a total bluff just meant to scare him)

So that was all fine and dandy, he seemed to have left after that, but now my mom is worried that he's going to come into OUR house wanting to steal food/cigarette butts. I am a night person and was in the kitchen at 3 am to get a drink, and my mom was awake walking around the kitchen in the dark thinking she heard someone. It's unheard of her to be awake that early so I know this has her really freaked out. I won't know what to do if he comes in my house and attacks one of my dogs, I'm 17 and huge, and he's like 5'6 100 lbs so i'm not worried about him attacking me but if he bites my mom or my dog or something trying to steal from us idk what i'll do.

i kind of want some way to put my mom at ease cause she really doesn't need to be stressed about this fucking day walker coming into our house and stealing/possibly attacking one of us, but i sleep like a rock and have an inconsistent sleep schedule so she's worried he'll show up when i'm asleep

also nobody in my family likes the police due to how they treated my brother after his girlfriend committed suicide, so I doubt she would call them if he came in just because of my brother's ordeal after that incident.

Edit: a family friend named Steve went to michael's house, his dad was too drunk to stand and his mom was high on something (her pupil's were apparently soccer balls)and michael was just walking around their yard playing catch by himself. That was like 3 hours ago and I saw a cop outside my brother's house talking to Steve. (Steve lives with my brother due to being homeless since he can't find a job out of the army)

anjirocoollock your doors?

As playing a season with a slow person, I can confirm that locked doors will solve the issue.

we live in a really kind of rural area, i don't think our doors have ever been locked since we've had this house because it's really uncommon to have someone enter your house without permission. So uncommon that I didn't think of it. I'll tell her to start doing it but idk if it'll be enough she is really... unreasonable a lot of the time.

I live in a super rural area and never locked my doors. Then I had $1,000 worth of shit stolen, and now I lock my house/car all the fucking time. True story.

My friends know where a key is in case they need anything.

I live in the middle of no where, my closest neighbor (not counting the Buffalo behind the property) is 1/3 of a mile down the road. We always lock our doors. Sounds like you guys just might be a little more trusting than what is normal to be honest. I'd invest in new locks. Keeps problems like this from arising in the future.

i think this is the first house ive lived in where we locked the doors, and im almost 100% sure its because while we were building the house we left some equipment on site that got stolen one night. it seems like a very "canada" thing to do to not lock the doors, i dont think ive ever heard of an american who doesn't.

Call his parents and the police, in some order. There should also be a child services line which you could call - rather than just police, it's possible that someone more specialized for troubled children should be involved at this point.

Locks are also a big deal.

I would not think to fight this kid. You are (mostly) a sane person, and have limits. His brain works differently, and he has different stopping places.

As an example, I have 4 inches, 50 lbs, and 3 years of boxing training on my sister, not to mention weightlifting, but she definitely wins in a fight because I try not to kill her. (Last time we fought, it wasn't a fight - I was reading a book, she walked up behind me, wrapped both hands around my neck, and squeezed. I haven't been back for more than a day since).

Obviously he should go to the cops next time it happens so maybe the kid can get some help. But what if this kid is actually dangerous? I mean, he did bite a dog so it's easy to see he's not all that bright up there.

Would you let someone break into your house at night and murder your loved ones when you could've saved them? I'm not saying go to this kids house, start shit and put a bullet in him. I'm saying that when it comes to protecting your family, you do whatever it takes to keep them safe. Having a firearm and not needing it is better than not having one and needing it...

Being a rural guy myself, I've never once locked a door in my life - it kinda gets me in trouble when I visit friends who live in large cities (chicago, Indianapolis etc).

Your brother should contact social services not the police.

If they're not feeding their child something should be done about it - if the child has problems which are not being addressed, something should be done about it. Rural poverty is the sort of thing that people don't really hear or talk about - not to mention people with untreated mental problems or the mentally handicapped being swept under the rug and ignored/neglected.
