bleghfarecgonna use this as an excuse to repost thefragile's tf2stadium video
This was a nice substitute for the video requested. I get a laugh out of the TF2 college style lecture, but fun to remember these old details, it feels like another lifetime.
If anyone does make the iceberg video, I want to add the guy that played an official match (I think) outside at a train stop on his laptop and then shared a picture of it

this is less an iceberg and more just moldy stale water atp, but this thinking back reminded me how much hype and speculation surrounded valve recognizing competitive tf2 and adding comp matchmaking to the game
there were posts after posts in the early 2010s about talks with valve, direct feedback from devs about how they hate sixes and think the community should innovate or some shit, all culminating in the indirect announcement that they were working on in-game mm, which would eventually become comp mode with meet your match

https://www.teamfortress.tv/24792/valve-and-competitive-tf2
https://www.teamfortress.tv/34363/valve-visit
https://www.teamfortress.tv/36886/the-state-of-tf2-post-valve-meetings
and in the end, it all meant nothing. updates to iron out the many many issues meat your match incurred did not materialize. there was no renewed interest in competitive, there was no real use for the in-game competitive matchmaking, and after jungle inferno, there was nothing

(it looks like he actually unlisted this video (for good reason), but it's poignant and still hurts)

hot take maybe but I felt like this was cringe at the time and is even more cringe now.
the amount of time and energy that was wasted on something that would never meet the communities expectations, even by the slightest amount, was depressing to see. There was no world where it would have been a benefit for comp tf2. And the amount of shitty rulesets and weapons that we had to put up with over the years because "it will appeal to a bigger audience" is laughable.
what we've always had is a community that was too good for the game, the amount of talent and work that people have put into it, has and always be incredible in relation to the game. And I feel a lot of people put too much hope and energy into something that was always going to lead to a major disappointment.

This iceberg might seem a little weird/different in terms of the layers as I tried to model it after this iceberg. I try to view it as a pipeline from casual to competitive, linking different concepts, people/figureheads, and other sort of trivia; eventually you get to the bottom 2 layers, which are mostly just various tftv dramas from either esea or rgl era. (I think this part of the iceberg might have to be reworked on a little as ESEA was like 2009-2019, so for 10 years worth of tf2 it might feel very bunched together in terms of content). Also included on this website is a description feature, where you can hover over the text for info, I'll try to fill those out soon.
I think it's still very incomplete and there's definitely a lot I might've skipped out on (especially anything non-NA). Any feedback/suggestions on what to add/remove would be greatly appreciated.
[spoiler]I made like 95% of this about a week or two ago, in like 2-3 hours.
