Hi tf2tvers,

I have been meaning to upgrade from 60hz to 144hz, but I don't have the best pc so I may not even get the most out of said upgrade. I ran a benchmark a few times, and here are the results:

- dx 80 64 bit version medium config
28718 frames 130.772 seconds 219.60 fps ( 4.55 ms/f) 28.345 fps variability
35653 frames 151.113 seconds 235.94 fps ( 4.24 ms/f) 28.345 fps variability
39308 frames 160.335 seconds 245.16 fps ( 4.08 ms/f) 28.345 fps variability
(no matter how many times I run the test, these are the ballpark numbers I get)

Is this average fps high enough to warrant an upgrade to 144hz? Because there definitely were moments where the game would drop below 144 on like a full casual server or something. Do I need a constant fps above 144?

Hi!
I actually still play competitive tf2 on 60hz but in your specific situation (since I don't know your PC's specs and what hardware you'd be able to upgrade), if you're limited by an lower-end GPU and an ancient ass game like TF2 that is already poorly optimized I'd only consider buying a higher hz monitor if you're gonna make other upgrades to your PC. Although from playing at some LANs for both TF2 and Valorant, the jump from my home setup of 60hz to 240hz and even 144hz was pretty astounding.

since u live in the usa, pay attention to /r/buildapcsales on reddit for prebuilts. if you're under the $1k budget theres sometimes a 4060 (should be now with the recent new gen of gpus from nvidia) with a i5-1x400 (x for generation of the i5-1x400 cpus) processor that may run around $600-$650

it is always worth it to buy 144hz if there's a good deal. Plenty 144hz deals these days with 240hz becoming the new standard. companies will slowly clear out stock of older 144hz models

it's worth if your pc can't even handle 60 fps. you can upgrade other specs later
Lock the monitor to 60fps in the off chance you don't like the experience on low specs, then unlock to 144 when you upgrade the CPU etc

On 144hz I visually noticed when TF2 drops to below 110 fps. but that's still almost double of 60, so still better
For me, going from 144 to 240 wasn't really noticeable, but the 60 to 144 transition was huge

Yes, whenever your FPS is above 60, the 144Hz monitor will be smoother and more responsive than the 60Hz one.

badboy69Do I need a constant fps above 144?

No.

144Hz is so much better than 60Hz, even just moving your cursor on the desktop.

120-144 hz is always a good investment for gaming and will make your experience more buttery-smooth at first. overtime youll get used to it but looking back you'd never wanna return to 60 hz, simply that type-a-beat

Definitely yes. For your situation:

  • If you get consistently above 144fps, it's a no-brainer
  • If you get consistently between 60-144fps, you should still get the 144hz monitor. If you get bad screen tearing (you likely won't but just in case) you can turn g-sync on.

However, like Tob said, 240hz is becoming the new standard for gaming. A lot of 144hz monitors cost <$100 today, and many 1080p 240hz monitors only cost around $150-200 or even less. So you'd only be spending 50 extra dollars (or so) to get a 240hz monitor instead of a 144hz one. IMO if you're planning on upgrading your PC anytime soon, go with a 240hz since they're super cheap right now. If you're not planning on upgrading, go with 144hz.

If you can afford to save a bit longer becuase of work or whatever, and you use your pc often in any meaningful capacity you're better off just upgrading your pc and monitor to 240hz in one blow and stomaching sub-optimal hardware for longer (you also get very important aura points from grinding on shit hardware); if you're a student and or a kid, then just get a cheap 144hz, even if your computer is burger it still does make a difference.
