how many players would pug if they didnt have to scrim 2 hours a night a few days a week during the season? people who pug after scrims and matches likely have more energy than the average comp player. i guess the most obvious way to tell is how much pugs pop off during the off season.

rgl is killing pugs by doing long 3 month seasons instead of a monthly cup.

DrHappinessJust having more players pugging is not the solution, its about having a system where people of all skill levels can find a group or community around their level where they can actually play competitive.

thats literally solved by having more people in a central place
instead of having multiple pug groups that never start why not have the overflow of people who dont get consistently picked in an A pug turnover to a B pug everytime? cuz as it is rn theres very rarely 24 ppl ANYWHERE and more like ~18 or ~19 and when those 12 are picked the rest sit in limbo or even worse, leave and wait for the A pug to be repicked

pugme was complete ass based on the fact that there was fadding as a feature alone

An A pug has started. There is potential to get a B pug started, so what hypothetically happens?
1. Joe and Jib don't want to be in the B pug, they would rather wait for the A pug with the good players.
2. Tim and Tom don't want to add up because Smithy is added up and Smithy is toxic, but still allowed to play.
3. Johnny doesn't add up because he always gets fatkidded. Even if he were to join now, there's no guarantee the pug runners won't lock the queue and then a better player comes in during picks and causes him to be fatkidded again.
4. Frank sees that all that's left in the B pug are a bunch of low-div people who got fatkidded and leaves, he doesn't want to play a low-div pug.

That's why it never gets filled to 24. As much as you want people to just add up, you can't force people to play with someone they think is toxic or play with someone they think is low-div and going to make for a terrible pug. That's why having a group that is TOO big is sometimes worse than a controlled in-house filled with people who are all cool with each other.

I feel like pugchamp was really the last time I felt like pugs were in a good way, so I'd love to see a simple / clean website style system like that again. That said, I'm not around as much anymore so I could be wrong / missing something.

Things I liked:

1. Adding up on specific classes with just one click was dope and made picking teams really fun, incentivized captaining, and gave captains so many options / avoided the problem of, "I picked you to play XYZ not XYZ you're throwing" style complaints.
2. The stats on pugchamp were cool. I liked knowing how many pugs I had played and on what classes. Also gave captains a vague idea of what to do with players they didn't recognize. If you don't know a player in an inhouse pug you really have no indication at all of what classes they play regularly.
3. It had the option to run captain/picking pugs for higher and mid level players OR mixchamp for players that didn't feel like they'd get picked in higher or mid level pugs if they weren't well known.
4. I didn't have to be added in a discord voice channel in order to add up for a pug

I don't remember why pugchamp died tho, so maybe I'm missing something huge that contradicts all of this.

det-jetzthe last time pugs were good was 2017-18 pug champ imo
Even pugchamp right at the end (b4 website died) was pretty good. If you were newer/lower div there were always pugs starting around 5pm that had a good mix of invite players and lesser known players. They were always really chill too

Favorite part of pugging was getting screamed at by invite players, twas the good old days

I would say that Indecency is correct, at least for the most part. I feel like there are enough pug groups out there that at this PugHub is not a "central" pug group. If there was literally 1 pug group that everyone went to then people would actually join. The only group where I would not say this works with is Invite players who should have their own pug (or whole system). Sadly this game isnt big enough for Faceit to actually work, either that or puggers are super needy and will never be happy with any system that is given to them.
And also if you are one of those Joes, Jibs, who got fat kidded from the A pug and dont want to play B pug. Why? Just play the B pug.

again chiming in from the shit players point of view, tasheem is at least right about one thing that there's very hardly more than 18-20 people playing at one time, and because there's very often not exactly 12 people or 24 people added up i dont add up mainly because i know irs a waste of time to just not get picked. i dont think ive seen 3 pugs running simultaneously in pughub for a while and when there's two running, they're usually full enough of invite, advanced and high main players across both the a and b pug that i don't really have a chance and i know that's true for a few other people i know too. considering i have been seen multiple times added in the channel for 4 hours straight to play a pug and not get picked, i would say that makes me an outlier compared to other am/im players who probably just see the state of pughub and don't even bother, which becomes self defeating because then other am/im players don't add up because they don't see a possibility that a pug of their level starts

It's because players that run pugs are boring as fuck, or too sensitive. You try to come up with these elaborate new ways to pull in more players and they never work because this stupid game started out as a community, not an eSport, but for some reason you always treat it like the latter. Everyone here is just actively partaking in bitching and moaning instead of actually trying to have fun and so here is my suggestion; use drama and negativity for good. Let players talk shit, let them be retarded, let them act dramatic, turn the game into WWE. Have some god damned fun instead of trying to win all the time. Most of you morons in Invite now took so many fucking thousands of hours and years to get there and those of you who aren't are just waiting your turn to larp being important (pro). Christ it's not that fucking complicated.

DrHappinessIn my experience as someone who is down to pug/mix but is a washed middie at best, most of the 'popular' places to pug that are created eventually become the same circlejerks of Top Mid to D1 players who all know one another and generally result in quite cringy pugs in general.

Feel like this is the biggest issue that pugs face. If there isnt a healthy stream of new (not in skill level but new to the website) players because captains always play the same faces, and god forbids if they decide to pick someone new theres an uproar in mumble, then you might as well just create a discord server to mix.

Speaking as someone who gets fatkidded all the time. I never managed to play in Pugchamp because of this and tf2.online is going the same path. If you have no weight to your name, you wont play, and queueing for medic wont save you even tho thats what everyone complains thats lacking.

Pretty much this plus what #38 was saying. Anyone who wants pugs to stay alive are the people who will always be picked, as they get to play the most. The 40% of people who don't get picked and are just expected to wait to fill in for one slot for the next game in 40 mins that they might not even get in it aren't going to hang around. For an idea into the numbers, you get 20 people added, 12 picked so 8 leftover (that's 40% of people not picked). Then those 4 leave and a new 4 join over the course of the next 40 mins as the A pug is going on. Usually a B pug is triggered but doesn't start due to people going afk or doing something else since they don't sit and stare at the website for 40 mins doing nothing else. Then the A pug ends and the same 12 players get picked as they are the better 12 players or they are friends with the captain, and the cycle repeats.

An anonymous mix system is a lot better for the longevity of the site, but it results in lower game quality which would result in it being filled with much lower skilled players as better players tend not to have fun just styling on worse players.

If people really want higher quality games they should go look for 5 other guys they enjoy playing with and try to find other mix teams to play against, or even real teams. Not scrims, just mix games, can play any classes or whatever and change each map but it eliminates so many of the problems of toxicity and waiting. It is more effort but it pays off with higher quality and more enjoyable games. Ofc noone really wants to put in the effort, they just want it done for them (for example, the premise of this thread) but the solutions are there if people wanted to try.
