good on them for giving that money to a good cause instead of just adding it to the prize pool.

RiddleSmart PR move by them, but it doesn't really change anything. It's basically fluff, info we already knew, and an added "we're giving $7000 to cancer, forgive us pls."

And for everyone saying people responsible should be fired:

lpkane has pretty much said it was his idea and fault, and considering lpkane is the co-founder/co-owner, unless torbull buys his stake out, or he steps down (lol), nothing will change.

Again, everyone seems to forget that a lot of people have already filed a federal complaint against the company. Also according to reddit a lawyer has already been contacted.

There is another thing that bothers me is that they say to open a ticket if your shit got fried because of it. 1) how can you even prove it, my gpu died last week for no real reason but how could one prove it was from the client. 2) What about being banned for support ticket abuse? I've been told to stop sending in tickets for alot less

That's good news, but it's such a foggy situation that there is no guarantee what will happen from this. I hope shit does get done though, they shouldn't be off the hook just by spending some money on a PR donation.

ESEA just addressed this

http://play.esea.net/index.php?s=esports&d=comments&id=12692

Looks like someone is getting fired

He later corrects that it was running for 2+ weeks and actually raised 29~ bitcoins (around $3,602.21 USD) and to apologize awarded all current ESEA premium members a free month of service and that all the money raised will go into the prize pool. He also claims that all bitcoin mining code was removed from the client.

The value of the mined Bitcoins was $3,713.55 and ESEA will be donating 100% of the $3,713.55 to the American Cancer Society. ESEA will also match 100% of this amount for a total of $7,427.10 donated. ESEA is also increasing the Season 14 League prize pot by $3,713.55.

+ all of the freemium they are giving away, as well as potential hardware? (i have no clue what ESEA intends to do with damaged computers) imo is a decent way to apologize (considering they're losing quite a few $$$ from this). From what they've told us, it went under everyone's radar, and they are taking precautions against it. We might've jumped into conclusions to fast blaming ESEA for "farming money"

Yes, but it's a HUGE breach of trust from ESEA. All that freemium and the charity is a stunt to mitigate damage caused by ESEA's own employees. The fact that the number jumped from 2 bitcoins to 30 leads me to believe that the number is much much higher than they're letting on. This is totally inexcusable.

They said they'd pay for damaged hardware if you're logged and have proof. If they go through with that, I honestly wouldn't hold it that much against them anymore. Though I'm pretty sure everyone wants the scapegoat asap.

Also, I think lpkane only knew about one of the bitcoin's that was a smaller accident (I don't know if they used the same bitcoin for every client), when in reality there was a miner added on the 13th that was the real deal. Him trying to handwave it was pretty retarded though.

What i've learned as a non-premium but hoping to get premium member is that I will not be running the ESEA client unless I need to because I do not give a god damn fuck about what they will do to compensate for this, i do not trust these people.

There are no apologies, only justice for committing a serious crime. I don't care how much money they donate to charity, how much they try to "buy" us back, or how much revenue loss their business will face. The people responsible(it literally can not be one guy) for this need to be entirely removed from the organization and be held to a proper act of justice in court.

I agree, I will not be running the ESEA client & paying premium now that S13 is over.

I'll be taking this slip up as an opportunity to stand against the problems I've had with ESEA before, and I will register for a new league in the coming seasons.

My full support with be going to whichever league I feel has the best intentions for TF2 and the community, and is not solely in Esports for financial gain.

Just running I'm pretty sure, otherwise the gpu on my shitty little laptop that I play on would have melted through the case by now. I haven't run the client myself since my last match of s13.

I am no legal expert, but this seems to be referring their policy on changes to the SITE not the client. Also even if this was for the client, they are saying that they will give notice of these changes, which was not done when the bitcoin miner was added. So under this random img that has no link or source, and is not even relevant to the client, they have violated the ToS.
But again I am no expert.
As to what federal law has been broken, idk.

If by "you two" you meant me, I have been going through it sporadically, and have seen numerous links to laws that I am too lazy to click on. I am not a legal expert, so I would have to take someones word on it. It seems that there is a plethora of evidence showing the breaking of Federal Law and very little defending them with their ToS.

harbleuBlueberryVillainIncorrect, TFC thrived for a longtime, there was no LAN for the Platinum division, no money, no prizes, people played for the love of the game. TFC died eventually because it got old, valve stopped supporting it, times changed, and people moved on to other games. TF2s release sealed the fate.sorry but that doesn't sound like a great situation to me. yes tfc may have sustained itself but i doubt it continued to grow. tf2 right now has been slowly but steadily growing over the past couple seasons with it being on the verge of its biggest season yet. if esea were to die that would change.

i don't see why the tf2 community is so up in arms over this. there has been ONE esea match played since the bitcoin thing was added. i highly doubt anybody from tf2 runs the esea client outside of matches so in all probably only 12 people were affected by this. the cs community has every right to be upset about this seeing as they use esea to scrim/pug but we don't. yes it was scummy of them to do but it really had no affect on most tf2 players.

The principle behind the fact that we are still all paying for a service provided by ESEA. It doesn't matter that we aren't effected by it in the slightest. They are a business for god sake man, its low of them to what they did and you should be pissy about it as well.

TFC died eventually because it got old, valve stopped supporting it, times changed, and people moved on to other games. TF2s release sealed the fate.
sorry but that doesn't sound like a great situation to me. yes tfc may have sustained itself but i doubt it continued to grow. tf2 right now has been slowly but steadily growing over the past couple seasons with it being on the verge of its biggest season yet. if esea were to die that would change.

i don't see why the tf2 community is so up in arms over this. there has been ONE esea match played since the bitcoin thing was added. i highly doubt anybody from tf2 runs the esea client outside of matches so in all probably only 12 people were affected by this. the cs community has every right to be upset about this seeing as they use esea to scrim/pug but we don't. yes it was scummy of them to do but it really had no affect on most tf2 players.
The principle behind the fact that we are still all paying for a service provided by ESEA. FzeroPaalsFzeroDid you two even read the whole thread? It's in here and if you read some of reddit you will see it tooIf by "you two" you meant me, I have been going through it sporadically, and have seen numerous links to laws that I am too lazy to click on. I am not a legal expert, so I would have to take someones word on it. It seems that there is a plethora of evidence showing the breaking of Federal Law and very little defending them with their ToS.
If you wont read 7 pages on a thread, you really wouldn't read a whole law

The thread has been open for 20 hours, and has 200 posts. If you expect me, a person who has class, a life (heh), and other things to do to go through and click every link that i see and expect to understand a field which I have no understanding in, I am sorry. I was merely trying to understand what this emmawatson devil's advocate person was doing showing that irrelevant img.

Paals[words and stuff that I don't want to repost here]

I would say they could be charged for destruction of property, as some hardware has been destroyed since this code was pushed to the main client build. It would just be from negligence instead of intentional (at least, I hope whoever did this didn't want anyone's GPUs to die from this), and would just result in a fine.

Others have pointed out other laws, more specifically referring to the intended act.

Under that thought, as long as it doesn't affect you directly then it shouldn't matter? What if your internet browser was doing that? Would that bother you? I mean I don't like to use google chrome for selling my information, even though it is better than Firefox
