Esea Client Mining Bitcoins

Lure.

TronPaulfrknsinnerI'm going to play a little bit of devils advocate here and just say the amount of people coming out and saying their hardware got borked is almost as sketchy as esea using users to mine for bitcoins.Yes. I ran folding@home on my (overclocked) cpu and gpu 24/7 for 4+ years and never had either fail. I'm sure some people actually did but most of them are full of shitThat depends on how well the mining code was written and how "nice" it was (ie how aggressive it was in taking resources). Folding is written by people who probably know more about what they're doing than the ESEA anti-cheat developer team. Would love to see the bitcoin part of the source code, but I don't expect that to come out unless there's a lawsuit.

Oh, if there is more to it than just 100% load then I don't know what I am talking about. Figured that was the basis for failure.

From what I've read folding is very careful about not using up full load on your PC. It's meant to be as passive as possible. There is no indication that the ESEA client's bitcoin mining did not overtax systems and until the source code is released no proof if that's the case or not.

enigmasynchroThe thing that really bothers me is how lpkane handled it (ie in typical lpkane fashion), via lots of lies and misdirections. If he had just come out and said "hey, yeah, we did this as an experiment and forgot to remove it from the code, sorry. we got X coins out of it though, and we'll be giving premium users something (freemium codes) in return for the trouble it caused." instead of just dodging everything with sarcasm and general douchebaggery, most people wouldn't even mind that much.that's actually exactly what he said/did

I meant the first time around. The first thread was a completely different attitude from kane.

I'm still willing to believe this was an accident or mistake.

If you're setting out nefariously exploit someone through hidden functionality in a program, how stupid would you have to be to target it at an audience with a selection bias towards technological aptitude (ie hardcore PC gamers)?

This is so shitty even coming from ESEA. It's even funny that they thought nothing bad would happen to them and the responses they have given so far.

If you know anything about software then you are well aware that no feature is "accidentally put there" and then turned on.

I can't believe I still have this silly image. Not really relevant.

But as people have said previously, unfortunately we need ESEA more than they "need" us (probably).

CEVO and UGC exist. Sure there are features of both of those leagues that are either shit or not up to par with ESEA, but it ain't like there's no backup plan. I'm also pretty sure people here would start salivating all over their Shlomo Goldstein Razer Gaming Products and Peripherals (c)(r)(tm) at the prospect of being able to run their own league if they get enough people to rally to their idea/cause.

"Where there's a will, there's a way" and all that.

This is like if you bought a gun, loaded it, turned off the safety, and set it near the edge of a table, where your 1 yr old toddler is crawling around. And then you installed a fucking bitcoin miner on all your customers' computers

The people responsible should be fired, no questions asked.

There has also been a discussion of this on hacker news (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5636233) and reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/1dglil/popular_competitive_gaming_league_esea_admins/)

"we ran the test for a few days on our accounts, decided it wasn't worth the potential drama, and pulled the plug, or so we thought, fast forward to 48 hours ago, a fuck up in the client server results in a restart which results in a setting getting changed which enables it for all idle users, and here we are" -lpkane

That is the biggest horse shit excuse I have ever heard in my entire life, this was deliberate and ESEA needs to held accountable.

harbleudownpourTF2 community getting mad about something and then not doing anything about it

WHERE HAVE WE SEEN THIS BEFORE?
what is there to do about it? unless someone fronts $10,000 to start their own league or the community decides to raise $10,000 every 4 months for a league then there is nothing to do. top teams play so they can play on lan. that is the incentive to be a top team. without the incentive of a lan finals i know personally that many top players would quit. without the game having high level competition it will die. lan is what attracts viewers; invite matches are what attract viewers. if people are talking about the best interest of tf2 then as bad as esea is it is the best thing we have.

This is the first time ESEA is weak. Do you think the TF2 community should roll over for the good of TF2? No, we should not roll over, in fact, this is the ideal time to start making demands from ESEA, threatening to cut subscriptions, and threatening to stop participating in their league unless they change. By doing this we gain power, and by doing this we can bring attention to our needs as a community, for example:

- better servers
- stats on par with sizzling stats
- higher prize pools

If you scare them enough, they will come to the bargaining table. Even if LAN does attract the best and brightest, we have a window of opportunity to get what we want with little risk if our cards are played correctly.

Well, from what I am seeing, they are going to be face deep in shit from the federal government for awhile so I doubt they will even be writing on the forums. Asking for anything now would just be talking to a wall

What transpired the past two weeks is a case of an employee acting on his own and without authorization to access our community through our company’s resources. We are extremely disappointed and concerned by the unauthorized actions of this unauthorized individual. As of this morning, ESEA has made sure that all Bitcoin mining has stopped. ESEA is also in the process of taking all necessary steps internally to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.

interesting

Smart PR move by them, but it doesn't really change anything. It's basically fluff, info we already knew, and an added "we're giving $7000 to cancer, forgive us pls."

And for everyone saying people responsible should be fired:

lpkane has pretty much said it was his idea and fault, and considering lpkane is the co-founder/co-owner, unless torbull buys his stake out, or he steps down (lol), nothing will change.
