i don't intend to get your hopes up with a bump, because i do not know anything about this, really. but feel free to add me on steam if you want someone to talk to. every opportunity i've had to talk to you, you were always a pleasant guy.

hope everything goes well for your brother&family.

The fact that's he's already in the hospital and being treated is a good sign. The mortality rate is very low when treated. I hope everything works out!

I think it's called Deep Vein Thrombosis - and if it reaches the heart unchecked then it can cause severe breathing problems or death if untreated. It sounds like you guys got to it pretty quickly. Treatments range from medication to surgery - and there's even a chance it heals itself.

Most DVT patients are rushed to an emergency room - as your brother was.

If this is a clogged artery, then it could be this: http://www.ehow.com/about_5397746_clogged-leg-arteries.html

They call this PAD.

I wish your brother the best of luck.

When my grandfather had lung cancer, he had trouble breathing and never had much energy. Just sat in his lazy boy most of the time. Blood clot got em while he was napping one afternoon.
A friend of mine got one after gaming at a friends lan. He had a metal rod in his leg from breaking his femur, so he thought a pin or something was hurting him. Checked in and found a clot. Back home the next day.
Blood clots can happen to anyone, even to very healthy, active people. If y'all game for extended periods of time, ya need to get up and just do some small exercises. Don't ignore something as small as discomfort in your leg.
Sounds like your brother is at a pretty legit place that knows how to properly treat it. Stay positive.

It's really hard to say much without knowing a better history of the patient. Anyone other than the attending physician would be purely speculating. I have seen cases where a pulmonary embolism patient dies within minutes or hours as well as cases where thrombolytic therapy resolves the issue and the patient goes home within a few days.

The most important thing is to listen to the attending physician and follow his/her recommendations once your brother leaves the hospital. If this was in relation to fatty foods, he will need to change his diet immediately, etc.

It sounds like he's in good hands, so I wouldn't worry too terribly much. Undiagnosed, the mortality rate for this type of thing is somewhere around 30%, but thrombolytic therapy reduces that to somewhere around 5%.

Knowing nothing more about the case, I'd say his chances are pretty good. Good luck.

A few years back one of my Uni instructors told us about someone in the class who also had leg pain which ended up being a blood clot. He went to the hospital and everything turned out okay, though IIRC he had to drop out the course.

Also, I don't know if you follow the Starcraft scene, but iNcontrol had the exact same thing, and he's fine now.

(This thread should be a PSA for everyone to get up stretch.)

Come now Zigzter, surely there's a relevant SC2 gif for that.

My dad had a DVT clot thrown to his pulmonary artery late last year - he was in the hospital over Christmas. Lucky to be alive, since a clot thrown to the heart would have killed him. If your brother's in the hospital, there's pretty much no chance he'll die of this, but he may be stuck in the hospital for quite a while while he recovers, and then he might have to be on blood thinners for a month or two. My condolences, hope everything works out alright!

I'm going to die of a blood clot if Salamancer doesn't start casting again.

I'm afraid shoutcasting is not a medically valid procedure for the treatment of bloodclots. Otherwise I'd be a goddamn humanitarian or something.

Last October I went to the hospital with pretty horrid pains in my upper chest. Felt like my ribs were made of barbed wire. A CT scan (you really gotta try it, it's freaking rad - you become the Human Torch for fifteen seconds) revealed it was a blood clot in my lungs, courtesy of another treatment I had going involving prolonged steroid use.

Anyway, they put me on blood thinners for a while, and I suspect your brother will get the same treatment. Initially, they need to get it working in you quickly, so I got to self-inject one subcutaneous syringe a day for about a week. Basically you grab your belly fat (if you're really fit, you'll have to do the upper thigh - nurses won't let you Rambo-style it) and inject there. Then they start the pills: Warfarin/Coumatin is what you take daily. The drug is cheap and the side effects (you bruise easily) are very minimal, according to the pharmacist, just don't go and get in a situation where you're going to bleed heavily, for obvious reasons. Every so often you'll go for an INR test, where they test how thin your blood is and adjust your blood thinner dose accordingly. Depending on your condition, you'll want a different reading. If it's too high, they'll give you vitamin K to thicken your blood, which for me came in the form of vitamin K-spiked orange juice. It's important to take the pills at the same time every day, especially before the INR test day or it'll skew the results a bit.

Was on Warfarin and Coumadin for about six months before the doctor told me it was probably all good. They ran an ultrasound of my legs just in case (the reactions you get walking into a waiting room of pregnant women as a 21-year-old male are also rad, especially when you wink at one and say "it's a girl~") and greenlit me to stop the meds.

That's pretty much it. I hope your brother recovers!

Fuck, sorry to hear that.

Losing someone that close is hard as hell, but I've found that remembering them for all the positive influence they've had on you and all the good times you've had with them can help alleviate a little pain.

Stay strong. <3

He was complaining if legs cramps in his calf, my mom took him to the doctor and they said it could be an infection or a clot, and to go to the hospital. My mom took him there and he collapsed the moment he went in he doors. A police officer came and told my mom she needed to come inside. He died an hour later. I called my dad and he made it from massachusettes to PA in 3 hours, normally takes 6.

Jjust pray for my brother if youd mind. He was my best friend and was soon to be a husband. I loved him.

I'm so sorry for your brother and your family. All I'm going to say is that everyone should learn the symptoms of blood clots and other life threatening medical conditions and contact a medical professional if they experience any symptoms. I'm no medical professional, but I've had several family members who have been lucky enough to survive blood clots and other medical emergencies because they saw a doctor when experiencing the most subtle of symptoms. Your brother will definitely be in my prayers.
