It's not that fortnite isn't "my kind of game", and it's very well designed for what it's trying to be, but it's just that it's intentionally designed as a non-esport.

The battle royale format is great for casual play and for streamers, where dying just means queuing up again. But even just from the spectator pov, it's an impossible task to cast 100 players fighting at the same time (the best you could reasonably do is get a cheat feed to go to the most interesting play at a given time) and makes it impossible to cheer for anyone in particular because odds are you'll see them once or twice and then they die offstream. You pretty much have to watch one player's stream, or watch highlights after the fact--neither is really all that good for spectators.

I want esports to grow, no doubt about it. But I'm worried about the trend of bolstering up a completely artificial competitive scene (solely for marketing reasons) with huge sums of money instead of actually making design decisions oriented towards tournament play. The videogame industry has had to deal with 'initially good idea gets used and abused until it's worse off for everyone' plenty of times (videogame crash of 1983, early access, dlc in many cases, lootboxes currently, arguably mobile games) and I don't want to see esports becoming the next example.

when you get a bunch of twitch streamers in an invitational tourney that happens, yeah. you're right the game has a fuck ton of people watching just for the gameplay but that doesn't mean that the same people would watch an esports broadcast. just like pubg casting and observing is gonna be a pain in the but hol, and that means watching is gonna be a bad experience too

im expecting it to behave kinda like pubg, people get bored of the gameplay after a bit or it saturates the people that are gonna play it and the game stagnates and starts declining. could be wrong but i doubt the top level esports meta won't stagnate and become campy and slow or just repetitive. a big part of that depends on how epic treat balancing the pro scene, my hopes aren't very high for that but again i could be wrong

3. No collusion between players. These sorts of tactics result in unfair and predetermined games. Shouldn't have to explain why this is a bad thing.

I don't see how you can have these done in battle royale games. Put 100 people vs each other and then you either let top 50 go through, meaning people can just stop playing the game after a certain point. Or you are left with 1 person out of 100, meaning that there would be a massive luck factor left in who goes through from the 100 players.

I just don't see how these tournaments can even work. To me it seems more like a circus, you go and watch cool stuff be done, or you participate in it because you like doing the cool stuff. Nothing is wrong with that, it just isn't competitive.

I just can't get into a game where you spend

happy to see a new game that I enjoy playing/watching popping into contention as another top esport. I don't see the game being as slow/stalematey as PUBG, even in top level play, as the map is quite small in comparison and there are some interesting options for fast movement in things like the jetpack and jump crystals. From what I saw during Esports Arena Vegas's production of Ninja 2018, It seems like camerawork has a lot of potential mid-late game (sub-50 players and from 2nd circle form on) though there will for sure be some action missed early on unless instant replay or PiP is utilized to show off missed fights or multiple at once. Casting's probably the bigger challenge, working with the producer feeds you get and deciding what to talk about being the biggest challenge.

Overall seems like the skill ceiling potential is definitely there and there are some good personalities and quality competitors already actively interested in playing in tournaments, so I'm interested to see how things go.

Dollyit shows how a younger average audience influences how esports games are. Games that are relatively easy and validate you no matter if you're the best in the world or play for 1 hour a day getting colossal amounts of money, and games that require a long grind but are rewarding are sadly neglected. bc 12 year olds don't have that motivation due to them actually not growing up with quote on quote 'harder' games.

im happy for fortnite and those who enjoy it i just really cannot understand why this is happening. I understand there's dev support and all that jazz, but fortnite and all these new massively popular shooters are ass to play and watch imo

i just dont like the downtime of the games and the general gameplay of the game, it always feels like it could end and any second plus I like the ability to comeback.

i wish i could say something like valve are just biding their time but I'd probably be giving to much credit lmao

I don't think Valve was ever really about following trends or whatever, they seem pretty out of touch. They're the type of company to just do whatever they like and if something's popular it makes no difference to them. TF2's chance of being taken seriously as an esport died when it gained a reputation for being nothing more than a hat simulator, imo. I do wish my cousin would stop telling me about how Fortnite is better than TF2 while he sits there playing it for 10 hours a day and begging people to buy skins for him, though.

I mean like just don't lose and stop dropping on the outskirts of the map. If you drop tilted and then know how to rotate to other populated places you don't get any downtime. It's not PUBG.

About the comeback thing, I don't really get what you mean. If you have no health and shield you can always get it back after you kill a player with meds
