I've used Hifiman RE-300 in the past. They have a neutral sound signature, without being boring. I would look into some of the updated models though, because the cable is extremely stiff and the microphonics are unbelievably annoying if you're moving or have long hair. I believe later models use more slack cables. For in-ears the imaging and sound-stage are more than passable. You also get 7 different tips to switch to. I have very weirdly shaped ear canals and normally find it tough to get IEMs sitting just right in my ears. Wasn't the case with these ones.

If you want something bassy and fun, can't go wrong with Sennheiser CX-300ii's. Don't expect great imaging and soundstage though, but they're my goto recommendation for people who don't worry too much about audio quality.

Alpha and Delta D6 sound nice and fairly neutral. I don't use mine very often though because I prefer the form factor of my massdrop edc which are more bass heavy. EDCs are also $30 less, come with 2 cables and are generally a better buy imo but the sound stage (I assume that's what you meant) isn't as nice.

For a less reasonable price I highly recommend massdrop plus universal ($200).

How well do 80 Ohm and 250 Ohm headphones work on a desktop motherboard? Specifically, the motherboard has a Realtek ALC892. The datasheet says the output impedance is 200 Ohm. I'm not sure how that number corresponds to actual listening volume.

Bruh just buy a cheap amp and never worry about it again. JDS Atom, Monolith Liquid Spark, and Schiit Heresy are all great budget options that can drive high end headphones easily.

am I the only one who regrets buying the dt 770s? I think for gaming it's not spatial enough, and it's not my preference for listening to music either.

I was about to buy those. I have the Sennheiser HD 599SE now, but I live in a pretty noisy environment so I wanted some closed-backs.

Closed back headphones typically don't have a great soundstage, if that's something you care a lot about and you don't use the headphones in a noisy environment, open headphones are generally better at it.

The ACL892 is just the chip (it's fine, not amazing, although who can really tell), the chip alone doesn't tell us the rest of the circuitry. You should never have an output impedance of 200Ohm. I hope the spec sheet is really talking about a max suggested headphone impedance of 200Ohm.
An average 80Ohm headphone on an average mainboard will very likely work fine, a 250Ohm will also work in most cases, but you might have to turn up the volume quite a bit.

I prefer DT 990 Pro with the TP mod (toilet paper or a cotton in front of the driver to quell the highs) over the 770s. Headphones at this price point all have significant compromises. Personally i would just save a little more and get Hifiman Sundara.

Yes. I can't stand the sound of them. I've tried both the 250 and the 80 ohm versions through the THXAAA789 and other amps, and they just sound horrible to my ears. The 250ohm versions did have fantastic imaging for a pair of closed-back headpohones, but both are too bloody tinny. There is 0 mid-range on these cans, and you need to turn them way up to get any bass out of them in my experience. Really never understood what all the rave was about, but maybe I just have shit ears...

Now I'm rethinking the DT-770. Any recommendations for closed-back headphones? Maybe under $200, but I can spend more if they're really nice.

I just got my THX AAA 789 amp + SMSL-SU8 dac and hooked up my M60x to it.

Best natural sounding closed-backs I've ever heard, would recommend. Now waiting on my Argon MK3s to get here.

I used those years ago and my #1 problem was that they were really heavy and tight around my big head especially since I kept my hair short. thankfully those things retain their value very nicely and I was able to sell them on ebay, after I swapped out the pads, for about 70% of what I paid

This is real important. They also just barely fit on me so it's uncomfortable for long-term use. Fuck the dt770s unless you have a pea for a head

I ended up getting the DT770s (80 ohm). They sound pretty epic driven with an Fiio E10K
