Severe 5-10 second stuttering

Up until last week I had no issues what so ever, but out of nowhere I started getting severe lag issues.
My game basically slows down to 0.5 fps for 5-10 seconds, and all inputs feel incredibly sluggish, almost as if the game is freezing several short times.

These happen 0-3 times per 30 minute game. (Today I hit a new record of 4 times during one game.)

Based on what I've observed it doesn't affect other games like Borderlands 3, CS:GO, or desktop, only TF2. It also happens considerably more often in normal pugs & pubs than it does in jump maps, mge, dm, but they can still occur there as well.

I got the advice to check temps, but I don't think that's the issue, I didn't observe more than 55 celcius while in-game.

I haven't changed any configs or settings in a long while.

Specs & info:

i7-8700 @ 3.2 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
16GB ram

Windows 10

Using mastercomfig on second lowest graphics with several addons

Cheers in advance

yo i been having this problem as well -
i havent found a permanent fix for it but for me this started happening after the steam UI update and it was the Steam Webhelper exe in the background using up like 99% of my cpu. If your jittering happens again try and quickly check your task manager for that, and if it is the webhelper close it on the task manager

edit: for me personally i think its cause i use the steam web browser quite often to watch vids on how to beat certain jump maps, so if you use the steam browser at all that could be the cause

i don't really use the steam web browser at all... but i'll see if that's the issue next time it happens.

When your frames go back to normal do any actions you did go through?

My game has been freezing also, go from like 200+ fps to 6 where my game completely freezes but when it comes back if I was walking forward I'd keep walking forward even with out pressing keys while it's frozen

The actions go through while it happens, just takes more time and not every goes through. It's like many mini-freezes and between every mini-freeze some actions go through.

Did you happen to open your main menu shortly before the lags happened? Because the friendslist (re)loading is known to cause a lot of lag & stutters, editing that out of your mainmenuoverride.res could at least solve that problem.

Blocking any incoming party requests is also a good idea, since spamming those can lag out and completely lock up someone's game.

tf_party_ignore_invites 1
tf_party_join_request_mode 2 // The current mode for incoming party join requests: -1 - Use default (currently 0) | 0 - Open to friends | 1 - Friends can request to join | 2 - Invite only

I only open up the main menu if I need to use the console, and during most games that's not the case. Still worth trying though.

I also have an interesting development: I updated to the latest version of mastercomfig and these stutterings are not happening, however, at the same frequency I had the stutters I now have one very small freeze, and it happens about as often as the stutters used to happen. I'll try the commands mentioned above and see if they work.
Edit: for reference, i just played a pug and i got 4 of these stutters, i believe it's the same thing but just a lot shorter

Which addons are you using?

Which version of mastercomfig were you using before you updated?

Can you try filesystem_buffer_size 32768 in your autoexec? If that doesn't work, try snd_async_fullyasync 0;snd_async_minsize 262144

For a small update: Two of the freezes that I've had actually lasted around 5-10 seconds, but most of them are significantly shorter.

I'm using disable pyroland, no extra models, no soundscapes. I updated these to the most recent version as well.

If I'm gonna be completely honest, I don't know what version I had previously... I used the installer to get it, and it doesn't say what version you install. I installed the newest version manually though.

Cheers, I will try those things and update this thread.

what do you mean? i have 16GB and it says 16GB both in the system information, and in the device specifications.

OK that's good. one of my friends had the exact same issue because of leaky RAM

Okay so, it seems like the first command has reduced the amount of freezes I get, which is max 2 per 30 minute map now. I tried the other commands as well but they don't seem to affect the freezes at all.

edit: this reduction might just be variance though? i'm not sure.

edit 2: upon closer inspection it seems it is related to either how long the game has been running OR how long my pc has been running. restarting the game and also restarting my pc both seem to help so I'm not sure if it's either or both.

bump, anyone know what I could try? reinstalled tf2 today and still get these freezes

uninstall my hud and config maybe? never had any issues with them in the past though so I don't see why I would need it

Version 8.4.9.

-novid -nojoy -nosteamcontroller -nohltv -particles 1 -NoQueuedPacketThread +cl_clean_textures_on_death 1 +mat_lodin_time 0 -w 1920 -h 1080

HOWEVER... I haven't had any of these freezes today or yesterday. I haven't changed ANYTHING since my last comment on this post. I'm just really confused.
