If you like or otherwise haven't tried visual novel games, danganronpa is really good. The story was really good and the class trials actually had some nice gameplay elements. First is the weakest in the series imo, but still really good and worth playing certainly.

1. Can't ever go wrong with DOOM whether it be the new one or the old. I'd recommend going ahead and getting mods if you plan on playing the older versions of doom.

If anyone is interested they recently released Quake Champions: Doom Edition on Mod DB

2. One Finger Death Punch & DUSK (no story what-so-ever but action-y never the less)
3. Killer Is Dead
4. Salt and Sanctuary
5. Okami HD
6. The Darkness II

A hat in time is AMAZING. Also made by a tf2 player so hats! http://store.steampowered.com/app/253230/
Also need to play portal, the stanley parable, and KOTOR 1 & 2
http://store.steampowered.com/app/221910/The_Stanley_Parable/

I personally loved the talos principle the most out of new-ish single player games
http://store.steampowered.com/app/257510/The_Talos_Principle/

Refunct is a really chill 20 minute game worth playing imo. it's like under $2

I just played through all of The Surge, and its pretty average.

The limb targeting is a nice mechanic, but after that there's not much else that makes it unique. The story is confusing in the dark souls-y way in which they don't tell you whats going on, so you'll have to find the audio logs and put things together.

There's 5 bosses and they're all not that difficult. Big sister is probably the "hardest" due to shitty camera angles in the 2nd phase.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengence is awesome, and Sleeping Dogs is a nice GTA clone with an interesting Chinese triad narrative.

EricFor reference, I like story-driven games with action gameplay. I loved Life is Strange, but that's an exception. I can't tolerate turn-based combat, unless it's action-y like Undertale. I also hate being scared, so no horror games. Also not a huge fan of stealth.

Hi you should try X-com 2 :DDDD

STALKER series are by far the best single player games I've ever played

My Summer Car is great if you're patient, also recommend a wheel or controller at least for driving

Dark Messiah Of Might And Magic was pretty decent my bad it was in your list already

E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy has a completely incomprehensible story but is one of my favourites

see Antichamber mentioned a few times, really liked that one as well

DELVER is a very short but immersive rogue-like dungeon crawler. very fun, although very linear (same dungeon every time) there is mod support and some people on the workshop have made some interesting mods. its $15 on steam right now and although its a pretty small game i'd say its worth every penny.

Half life (black Mesa remaster) and half life 2 are pretty much as good as it gets.

Very good story and characters but the standout is how they don't hand hold you like modern games do. No flashing indicator where to go and no snap to cover button. Masterpieces

Lots of good options listed by others here. As for story-based action gameplay not mentioned in the OP, I feel like the Batman series by rocksteady should be an automatic include. I saw Maxi mentioned them generically, but Arkham City in particular has a fantastic plot and world.

Owlboy slips more alone the lines of your platformer-like, but has an engaging story to be sure.

And finally there's this little early access gem, one of my favorites of the past year, which definitely has gripped me tightly with both its combat and characters/story; I can't wait for its full release later this year!

It even has a free demo :D
