Input lag on mouse and keyboard. TF2 only

Recently came home from uni. Was unable to take my 144Hz monitor due to size constraints and am using my old 60Hz monitor hooked up to my laptop (Same one I usually use to play). When I play TF2 there is a massive input lag (feels like 250ms - 500ms delay) on both mouse and keyboard inputs. The only thing that has changed between my two setups is the monitor but I feel that if that was the issue then I'd experience the same delay in other games and on the desktop which I do not seem to have.

any advice on how I should go about fixing this would be great.

Thanks

-novid -nojoy -nosteamcontroller -noff -nohltv -softparticlesdefaultoff -reuse -primarysound -snoforceformat -swapcores -console -high -limitvsconst -nostartupsound -w 1024 -h 768

Same as I used before

Whilst testing I have also seen that my fps is stuck on 30fps in game which is probably the cause of the input lag. I have fps_max set at much higher than this, my monitor is set at 60Hz and vsync is disabled.

Set fps_max to 0. There's currently a bug on some system configurations which causes the FPS cap to be much lower than what is set.

Tried that but am still stuck on 30fps. It appears that the fps is high when I initially load a map but within a second it will drop down and lock there.

I think I may have the same problem as you, but with my fps capping on 60fps. It initially appears normal, then within 4ish seconds just locks and I get the delays. I've found that playing in windowed mode doesn't cap the fps (play around with different resolutions as well). It's a temporary fix until I find a solution.

On my old computer the launch option -high, while giving me higher frames gave me much more input lag.

As other have said make sure you're in fullscreen and vsync is off, make sure windows is optimized for gaming (there are a lot of guides out there for this), but the main thing I wanted to mention to you is remove all those launch options. Half of them probably do nothing and I normally get an increased input lag with every added launch option. All I use is -novid and nothing else and it works pretty well for me.

Thanks for the help everyone. For anyone else having the issue I tried changing my game from fullscreen to windowed and that has solved the issue. It is not ideal as I now have to play in a small box in the middle of my screen or switch resolutions but it will do for now.

Hi, sorry to bump this thread, but I seem to have solved the problem on my end.

I decided to install mastercomfig for more fps, and followed his installation instructions which included cleaning out any custom cfgs and mods. I then installed his maxperformance cfg and the addons for badcpu, badgpu and ssd. The game launched in fullscreen mode, and to my surprise I had no more mouse delay with no strange fps cap, and the game felt much smoother as well.

I think it may have been the clean up part of the installation which solved the problem, but if not, try a preset or a combination of the addons.

So, I know that you solved it but I found a better solution..
See.. When you set TF2 (or probably any other game) to "High Priority" it makes your CPU run the game much better by using more of the CPU just for the game.

And now here comes the problem, when the game uses more CPU then it normally should, it takes away the CPU power from the input devices as well. This causes an input delay. So, simply you want to balance between these two.

TL;DR: Just set TF2 to normal priority, as -high in the launch options makes it on high priority. make it normal priority via the task manager.

After all, it may be better than playing in a small window, it may cause like a 5, more or less, but anyway this shouldn't matter since you *probably* have high FPS.

Can you try with multicore option set off? Maybe the lag is because all tf2 threads are spread on all your cores and have high priority?
