Hello,

I'm searching for a new pair of headphones. I don't want a headset with a built in microphone since I'm using the modmic. I need some tips on a good pair of headphones in the 100-200 pricerange more or less. Most recently I've used Audio Technica ATH-M50x and AKG K612 pro. All suggestions are appreciated!

personal suggestions (amazon US prices)
sennheiser hd 558 (open-ear) - $100
brainwavz hm5 - $110
m-audio hdh50 - $140-150
beyerdynamic dt 770 pro - $180

i've used all of these cans (currently use the dt 770's) and they've all delivered some of the best sound quality imo

How's the positional audio in the dt 770? They are closed IIRC. Also 80 oihms or 250 ohms, whats the difference in sound? I do have a headphone amp.

I'm assuming you're flexible when it comes to open or closed.

*HD598s are always a solid choice
*AD900x are a tf2 player favorite, ridiculous soundstage/positioning with a boring sound signature
*MDR-1A have incredible sound with mediocre build
*DT770s are probably your best bet
*T50RP MK3s are the best bet if a) you're willing to spend $50ish on better pads, and b) have a good amp since these are some of the least efficient headphones in existence

I was thinking about T50RP MK3 for a good while but I would probably need a new stronger headphone amp and they are a hassle to get in sweden. Also I heard T50RP MK3 mayflower 1 mod is very nice

the positioning is surprisingly good for them being closed, but of course they're not gonna be as great as an open-eared set
80 vs 250 isn't really noticeable without an amp, but definitely worth it for anyone who cares to own one.

dt 990 pros are pretty good :)

but there's nowhere good for the modmic to stick on it really, the open back means that the glue doesn't hold.

80 vs 250 Ohm isn't about sound, it's about the amp.

http://graphs.headphone.com/graphCompare.php?graphType=0&graphID[]=2231&graphID[]=713&scale=10

With no amp or one that doesn't get you enough voltage (e.g. the classic bullshit 1 Vrms) 250 or even 600 Ohm would be awfully quiet. On the other hand the 32 Ohm version will not sound good if your amp craps itself at 10 mA.

The DT-770 isn't exactly power hungry, so any non-garbage amp will be fine with any version of it.

Except it very well could be about the sound for some people since all of the 770's ARE tonally different. The 32 sounds much more similar to the 250 and 600 ohm versions than it does the 80pro.

For most people, their #1 determining factor will be the source they run it from, but for someone with enough power headroom to run 600ohm cans they'll choose the signature they enjoy the most.

Beyer really is the only manufacturer making 3/4 technically different versions of the same cans so this issue is pretty unique to them.

The Pro and non-Pro versions are different.
The non-Pro versions have also been EOL for a while so unless he decides to buy a Pro and a replacement driver for the non-Pro to mod it he won't have a choice.

So that issue has been dealt with.

Here are the 3 versions of the Pro.

Position and earpads wearing out account for larger differences than that.
Also source impedance is a thing.

Go with the 80Ω. 250Ω is quite useless for gaming imo (250Ω = better response at high and low freq which is useless untill you make music). 80Ω also guarantee 0 problems with impedance with any amp

AKG K701/q701/k702/k7xx/k712/kwhatever with an amp
Audiotechnica AD700/700x/ad900/900x
Beyer makes some good choices

Basically any open back with decent quality and good sound-stage.

but there's nowhere good for the modmic to stick on it really, the open back means that the glue doesn't hold.

A little patch of duck tape and that should be solved ;)

I've been through many, many patches of duct tape.
