Win10 Game Mode and Creators Update

Windows 10 got a new major update, the Creators Update. There are a bunch of new features/additions that are mostly irrelevant to TF2 players, but one that could be relevant is Game Mode.

MicrosoftOur vision is that Game Mode optimizes your Windows 10 PC for an improvement in game performance. To enable Game Mode, go to Settings > Gaming > Game Mode toggle the feature on. Doing this will give you the ability to enable the feature for each UWP and Win32 title you play by pulling up the Game bar (Windows + G) and the clicking the Settings button. There you’ll be able to opt individual games into using Game Mode.

I was curious if anyone on any of the Insider tracks had noticed a difference after enabling Game Mode for TF2 or any other games.

I downloaded the update yesterday and with no Game Mode I was getting anywhere from 80 to 150 FPS in pubs (Comanglia's quad core config with an i5 3570k/stock clocks and GTX 1060/stock), and objectively there was no difference after enabling Game Mode. Subjectively I can't say there was much of a difference either: neither an improvement nor a downgrade.

With how slow TF2 updates have been coming out, it might be a while before TF2 supports Game Mode, if it ever supports it. But with all the different combinations of hardware out there, I figured it was worth letting TFTV know about something that could make a difference.

You can force a download of the Creators Update by going here and clicking Update Now, or you can wait until April 11 or later for Microsoft to roll out the update through Windows Update (at this point there is no difference between forcing the install and waiting). On my PC, it took somewhere between 40 mins and an hour in total to install: 20-30 minutes to download and setup the update, then it told me it would need to restart a few times and I couldn't use my computer until it had finished installing 20-30 minutes later.

I just tried it, the game bar prevented me from moving my mouse in csgo... I'll try again once game mode is automatically enabled for tf2/cs once they get approved.

Can you still upgrade from windows 8 for free? Haven't gotten around to updating but maybe I will if there's no other downsides.

8.1 with classic shell is basically windows 7, except slightly faster.
Just hope you never have to change any system settings because they are sometimes duplicated and sometimes only in either metro or normal control panel and it's completely random.

10 feels like someone at microsoft though "well we finally made a good OS again, surely it's good enough that people will put up with the 5 tons of bullshit we've been waiting to add"

There are downsides and you can't.

yes you can, if you're disabled/use assistive technologies/say that you use assistive technologies (from your stream i'd say you qualify)

also with the last major update there were some major problems for some users so i'd recommend not forcing the early update/try delay it for a bit if you can to see if it's safe.

idk if game mode requires dev support, isn't it basically something that'll disable background processes that might impact performance, and maybe a few other things like being forced to tab out for some notification?

My only problem on windows 10 is not being able to disable automatic updates so it would just ruin my internet for a few hours each week
