Laptop for school and tf2

Hi all,

I need help finding a new laptop that is both suitable for tf2 and school. I'm moving schools in the next few weeks and need a laptop that can run decently (I'm used to playing at 50-60 fps) while also being the ideal size for carrying around in school.

For the requirements:
I don't care what brand it is (although i'd prefer it to have minimal branding)
I don't care about the laptop's appearance
I can survive with little storage (around 100GB is fine)
Touch screen isn't necessary
Light enough to be able to carry during school

My budget is a measly 600 dollars (flexible). Any suggestions are appreciated.

Also would it be better if i built it instead?

ps. I'm a retard when it comes to computer specs so sorry in advance if i have no clue what you're saying

I would highly recommend you keep an eye on xoticpc's laptop page to see if anything goes on sale. The cheapest laptop there currently is an MSI for $699, but they do have good sales sometimes, and I haven't seen another site where you'll get better specs for your money. Plus, if the policies there are the same as a few years ago, you get lifetime tech support for your PC purchase. You miight have slight issues with weight, depending on how light you wanted to go. That MSI I linked has pretty dang good default specs... but the deal with this website is that you can order their machines as listed or customize *a lot.*

Laptops by price:
http://www.xoticpc.com/custom-gaming-laptops-notebooks-gaming-laptops-ct-118-96-98.html
----
BUT I will say that even though the laptop I got from there a few years ago was a fantastic machine, I did end up regretting not just building a desktop and getting a cheapo laptop because I hated carrying such a valuable thing around... and when I did eventually wreck parts of it with a liquid spill, it was gonna be crazy expensive to repair, so I ended up just building a desktop instead anyway and putting ubuntu on an ancient thinkpad for school. :)

Edit: oof, didn't see you were oz. Dunno what shipping would be like. You might be able to find a similar custom seller there?

Sager (= Clevo) laptops are really good.
I recently bought one for university :)

They mostly have little branding and you have many configuration options!

EDIT: I found a australian Clevo reseller (seems to be a bit expensive though)

Don't worry about getting 20 fps, I get 80-120 in 6s (80ish in teamfights/mids) with chris' maxframes and im on a 2012 hp probook with a crappy i3 and an integrated gpu so $600 should get you great fps by comparison

I think most newer laptops for around 600$ can run TF2 at a playable framerate. I have a 3 year old Acer Aspire V3-571G and my FPS are ranging from 60-120fps with a graphics config. So you don't really have to worry about that, I think.

buy a used T440p with one of the higher end processors and pop an SSD in it.

This is a good starting place:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/262506000996

TF2 cares far more about your per-thread CPU power than GPU power. The GPU in this laptop is actually more than enough for TF2.

If you want more power but one that won't last quite as long as a Thinkpad (durability is important if you're gunna bring it everywhere...) try this:

While the original statement is wrong, TF2 won't run on ChromeOS despite it being Linux-based because it's missing so many other libraries and necessary frameworks that TF2 and Steam as a whole need.

I got one of these a few years ago, good enough to get consistent 120fps at 720p in tf2 and quite light to carry around campus + a good 5-6 hours battery life if you aren't gaming. Not top of the line anymore I guess but it works well for tf2 and it fits your budget well.

everyone in this thread is talking out their ass. i play tf2 just fine at 60 fps (low settings mind you but who cares this game is a fucking cartoon anyway) on a pretty shite lenovo that i inherited from my mom. it has an AMD processor that is comparable to a low end i5, and no dedicated graphics. i have been looking at laptops on craigslist that have decent i7s, dedicated gfx, and are listed for around 400-500 dollars. yeah, its craigslist, its used, but use your brain. not everyone out there is a scammer/selling a p.o.s. i just saw a brand new MSI laptop being sold in my area that will run new games on med/high settings. it was listed at 800 and the dude dropped it to 650 last night because hes desperate. if i wasnt broke id be playing on it right now.

my point is, $600 is more than enough to do schoolwork and run tf2. you could potentially have two machines that can accomplish both with more than enough overhead.

I am sorry to suggest this, but I use my late 2013 mac for school, cs go and tf2. I can get 70 fps in tf2 easily and macs are extremely easy to use. Great for schoolwork. You can probably find a slightly older refurbished mac for not too much.
