This is actually a good point. Given the money in, and seriousness of, some eSports, visas shouldn't have to be a problem.

Agreed, but there should be something similar put in place for eSports. It's a big business and is only getting bigger.

regardless of whether you think it's a real sport or not, the visa situation hurts every competitive game with a LAN scene and I think this would be a positive change

I always liked "Competitive Gaming". Compare it to chess and people understand.

They certainly are competitive video-games but NOT a sport.
There is a big difference between a 'game' and a 'sport'.
The term 'sport' means that the physical factor of the player(s) actually matters, so the term 'eSports' doesn't make sense. Sure it is a cute name for competitive video-games, but it doesn't make sense..

I agree with this idea, but there needs to be clarification as to which games count as esports or what sort of tournaments are worthy of getting a visa.

if chess is recognized as a sport, why not competitive gaming?

option 1: nerds on the internet get to be right about their definitions of sports copied from dictionary websites

option 2: people stop getting denied being able to go to international LANs

I think since games like chess are recognized as a sport it wouldn't be bad to call competitive videogames sports.
Just the thought that fat nerds will be able to call themselves athletes is kinda ridiculous.

Let's be honest here - I don't think anyone gives a fuck about whether or not eSports is REEL SPORTS, that's not the point and never has been and it's all just semantics regardless. Whether or not eSports is a sport depends on your definition of sports which can change from person to person, dictionary to dictionary and so on. What people DO give a fuck about is eSports being seen as a legitimate form of competition and pro gamers being able to travel to international LAN events without visa issues fucking everything up.

It's not about wanting to be a sport per se, it's wanting to be given the same rights and treatment as other forms of competition such as sports. It just so happens the way of doing that which seems to make the most immediate sense would be for eSports players to be able to obtain an athlete's visa, which means recognition as a sport. Well, to my knowledge anyway, I'm not knowledgeable at all of how these things work and won't pretend to be, but that's the impression I've gotten.

Sidenote: with it being a White House petition it is cool for me to put my name to this as a non-US citizen right? I've never been entirely sure of how that works, I did try to figure it out from the website but it wasn't very clear on it.

I wish Leffen's visa issues didn't stop him from going to Genesis 3, since PPMD is out for now & m2k got wobbled out early, woulda had a real chance of winning a national

Also leffen is on at EGLX vs Mango right now https://www.twitch.tv/clashtournaments
e: it was for the USA vs. 'The World' crew battle but it's over now

Also yeah, the main point is that he's a professional melee player that goes to international tournaments, and visa issues shouldn't be getting in the way

There's nothing legally binding about the website, it's just kinda a change.org thing hosted by the White House. It's probably not designed to be signed by foreigners but I don't think anyone cares because it doesn't have any lasting impact. Has nothing to do with laws or anything of the sort.

Do people who play chess professionally or compete in similar ways get P1 visas? Also seems like this was an isolated case, since it says that other players (in bigger games) have gotten P1 visas. Although I have heard of cs players getting their visas denied, mostly Ukrainian/Russian players tho if I remember right.

Bottom line is this is a growing industry which will likely be larger than real sports eventually in terms of fans/viewers, and the old men who run the world have to acknowledge this is the case, and modify or create new rules accordingly.
