Hey guys, I have working on a fps improvement guide that went far deeper than the simple install an fps config. Im wondering if you guys think theres some stuff I sound add to it or if its fine how it is. Any and all feedback would appreciated. This is based off of my old guide I made a few months back.

Just go over your grammar and spelling for starters.

Fix some grammar/spelling mistakes (your/you're their/they're) to look more credible

Edit: ninja'd :( I hate browsing on mobile

Edit #2: You should add the nohats mod and the no unusual effects mod. Also you might want to add the reduced particle effects mod (pyro flames, teleporter trails etc) but idk how useful that one is.

Can I get a link to the reduced particle mod? I have never heard of it. I will add no hats mod once I am done correcting grammar issues that I missed when proofreading.

Mostly skimmed but just a few things I saw:

You probably don't need to step-by-step hold-hands through avast and malwarebytes' installs. A mention of them and saying that you should scan for viruses is good, but the whole antivirus and anti-adware section takes up about a third of the entire guide (compared to the 10% maybe that's inside tf2, which is the most important part and is what people would read your guide mainly for). Considering it's a nonissue for most people, and a lot have both installed anyway, it seems like it's way too much.

And make use of [ code ] brackets imo. When you have something like:

lavanineThen you need to edit your autoexec.cfg and type the following
High quality pc -exec gfx
mid/toaster quality pc -exec stability

It can become a bit hard to know what you mean for people new to cfgs (do I put "-exec" or "exec" or the whole line or?).

Should probably look at some other fps guides for more things to mention / dl. Saying "use comanglia's cfg + 2 mostly-visual mods in the extra section" is a pretty small amount, both of fps improvements and of descriptions. Throw in some pictures, examples, and definitely more mods/cfging if you really want to set your guide apart from the rest.

Some more technical stuff but:

You should avoid using /my_custom_stuff/cfg/ to place your config files (unless you've already got a hud in there or something). /tf/cfg/ works perfectly fine and doesn't hurt loading times. .VPK mods inside custom also work fine, but for obvious reasons aren't optimal for configs. But every folder mod inside /custom/ increases load times a lot (whenever a file gets loaded in tf2, it has to see if each individual file is contained inside every folder mod. Checking for hundreds of files at once, like you do when loading maps, can become pretty bad with lots of folder mods).

Doesn't windowed borderless lower your fps and on top of that give input delay also?

I don't know if there's a better one, but this is the one I use (doesn't work in sv_pure) : http://www.teamfortress.tv/22586/particle-limitation-pack

also afiak the no unusual effects mod doesn't work/is outdated unless there's a new one that I don't know about

Hello,

Thanks for the feedback, I do appreciate it alot. Here is my response to each point you made. If you can think of how I can shrink it down and retain the info needed please let me know.

-As to why the guide is oversimplified is that this guide is targeted toward the people who dont know a lot about computers. (Were talking the people who click next through installs and wonder why their computer have 30 popups telling them to call a number to fix their computer)

-As to why the removal and install of a new antivirus is so damn big. The most common issues I personally see when people on Steam tell me their pcs are running badly is that usually there is some garbage antivirus sucking up 80% of their disk usage and 30% of their cpu idling at the desktop. As for long drawn out process for installs, Unfortunately the devs of Avast decided to include a lot of junk that are not needed and can hurt performance if not removed. You also have to tweak settings in Avast for it to optimally. As for the long drawn out MBAM bit people decide to do a threat scan rather than a full system scan with MBAM resulting in stuff still being there.

-I will add the code in brackets once I add the no hats mod and particle effect removal

-Working on adding more mods that I find

-Will add screen shots shortly

-Changed how I tell people to install the cfgs. Thanks for letting me know, I missed that part.

-Fixed the config issue with the - in it. Thanks for pointing that out that could have really screwed with it

-Not sure about that, Can I get where you got that information from?

-Do you think I should move the bits about FPS configs to the top and merge the mods I recomend into the fps config area?

Thanks

It might be possible to get two separate guides up at once and then link to eachother. Idk, I just think that imo as someone who knows that doesn't apply to me, it's a lot to go through before I can get things that're specific to tf2.

For the windowed borderless lag + input delay: http://www.teamfortress.tv/10068/fullscreen-vs-windowed-noborder-mode (afaik you can't disable aero/vsync on win 8+)

Mods can be kept separate I think, as long as you get more of them. 2 or 3 they could be merged, but really (and like you've said you're going to do) you should be aiming for more.

Hope to see good things from this!

Alrighty Ill look into that thread and move the config and mods stuff up above the malware removal stuff.

Also I added you on steam about a hud thing I cant find in Eve hud to move to my current hud, If you could accept the request that would be lovely. Steam name is Burning Smile.

To elaborate on that, you can use caps to emphasize a couple words like DON'T or STOP but don't use caps for long sentences.

It can sometimes, depending on weather they run in the background or not :) You would be surprised of what can break fps in this game since it's heavily dependent on the cup.

1) Some of these programs run services in the background which still take up resources.

2) Who wants a cluttered computer full of junk taking up disk space?
