How much of a disadvantage is 60hz vs 120hz?

SiTeHBu0mbbTL;DR: Feels smoother, actual improvement most likely negligible and/or a placebo type effect.

At 60Hz it will take 16 ms to get to the next frame where a 120 Hz it will be 8 ms
You could basically flick like a retard all the time without getting a headache

tf2 is weird because the FOV yr looking at is almost always very large, and the benefits of 120 hz is most notable when you're only looking at a few degrees (like being zoomed in)

otoh tf2 has a shitload of flicks and close range action where the target can be on yr screen for only a couple of frames

I really only "felt" a difference in the first consideration, but I can't see how the second isn't a big help too

Yep, yet during the flick images are blurred meaning you might not spot enemies. Just saying it is a logical conclusion that higher Hz and fast movements go better together than low Hz and fast movements.

I've estimated that upgrading to 120hz is worth somewhere between 100-150 MGE hours.

I had used a 144hz monitor for a year. When I had to reinstall Windows back in July because of a weird bug in rebooting I forgot to set my refresh rate back to 144hz. I didn't even notice the difference till my brother tested my monitor to see whether he would want to buy a 144hz screen for him. This happened 3 weeks ago.

I definitely notice the difference now, especially if you move your mouse rapidly left and right, but it didn't really affect my performance as a TF2 player, mainly because I play demoman. But I think it made a huge difference for me in CS:GO, after I basically quit the game out of frustration of my bad aim. I climbed from MG2 to LE in 2 days

If your aim consists of rapid movements, 120hz or more is better.

Being stuck at 60 is like playing on a non-mechanical keyboard for me. I don't like it nearly as much, but it doesn't really make an impact on how well I play.

Definitely looks nice though.

I found the difference was very subtle, at first I wondered if I'd even set it up properly. I notice the frame-rate drops though.

Their's a whole host of factors here to consider and the only real comparison you could make between the 2 settings is to compare them side by side with the same monitor and even then this isn't always true. Their are some 144Hz monitors out their that for whatever reason disable overdrive over 75Hz making them quite shitty for competition.

The difference between 60Hz and 120Hz is quite significant but imo the difference of a 5ms gtg to 1ms gtg is much more noticeable. Which would explain the different experiences users have been having when upgrading. People who went from 5ms or even 8ms gtg 60Hz IPS panels to 144/120Hz 1ms gtg panel saw a HUGE difference upon upgrading, while those who had 60-75Hz TN panels that did 1ms to 3ms gtgs saw a much more moderate change to 120/144Hz panels.

Also Powah uses a CRT so saying "He's a god with 75Hz" is a bit of an over simplification of reality. CRTs have no input lag other than the travel time of electrons, consider that when marketers as saying 1ms gtg that's measured against a crt so technically speaking CRTs are 0ms gtg, CRTs also flicker meaning their's significantly less motion blur than an LCD.

Hitscan benefits significantly more with 120/144Hz than projectile classes, which adds to the varying experiences of different users.

Also does this question really need to be asked? Name 1 invite scout in the last 9 seasons that wasn't using a CRT or 120Hz+ LCD

Comanglia Also Powah uses a CRT

Source? I don't really know Powah, but AFAIK he just uses/used for most of the time a sucky, old, cheap lcd.

Just like hal_9000 from CPMA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLt7hm4fAWo

Who, talking about crazy flicks... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q76UNcuKSVY

IMO 120 is more comfortable, but I have my doubts as to if it is as much as a game changer as some people paint it to be, or a requisite to play at high levels...(I'm on a BenQ 120hz right now)

hal_9000 isn't a fair comparison that video is 4 years old and even then he was using one of the early gaming monitors anyway. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001096 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001378 either way he's playing with 75Hz 2ms gtg at the time their was maybe 2-3 choices for 120Hz monitors all of which either had some kind of significant issue especially input lag or disabled overdrive with poor gtg at 120Hz.

as for powah I remember asking him if he knew what monitor he had like 2-3 years ago. afaik he's never changed it.

I mentioned this.
AFAIK dummy is the only one in the last 7 seasons. If you go back 8+ seasons you'll find a few lower invite scouts using 60hz.

Why does it matter that the video is 4 years old? That doesn't change how crazy the shots are. Also, AFAIK, Hal never changed his monitor from the one seen on the video(at least up until mid 2015, when he was still winning CPMA and now Reflex cups). It's actually certain he still used a "75Hz Samsung" up to 2014, because he has commented stating so in that same video, on 2014.

I went ahead and did some digging around about Powah, and I'm afraid you're mixing things up - here's a 2015 tweet from him showing his gaming setup, with two cheap lcds: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CMpRn-eWgAARrOj.jpg:large

AFAIK one of those is his old monitor he has since forever, and the other is a new one that's still 75Hz though...

I myself have a BenQ 120Hz and as much as I like, and believe I can feel the difference, I'm still able to play just fine after a brief period of adaptation on ~2200 elo QL lolCA... if that means something heh (just to make clear, i'm arguing 120 is better, but not a requisite - speeecially for non hitscan)

Edit: Also, on your argument about every scout in invite using 120/144Hz: IMO it could be more of the fact that they can/belive they need to do so than that they actually need to do so.

Who is better clockwork at 120Hz or clockwork at 60Hz?

If the answer is 120Hz then it does become a need for competition. Especially if it's instant improvement to go to 120Hz or an instant detriment to go to 60Hz.

That's not saying anyone is shit for playing on 60Hz they're just not going to be no.1 and more than likely they wouldn't be in the top 10 at least for today's standards for scouts, CS:GO, quake, and basically any competition fps.

It's getting late here and I have uni texts to read so I will address your clockwork point later, but to clarify: Nzr0 is one of the most famous CPMers. As he and HAL are both Bulgarian and live close they're always practicing/playing against each other. The CRT shown on the first video you last linked is from Nzr0's not HAL's computer, HAL's youtube account, for all I know, is this: https://www.youtube.com/user/tsvetkovprelude , and that account made a comment "1 year ago" saying he used a "75Hz Samsung"...

I would say that smooth, reliable frames are more important than a higher refresh rate. Higher refresh rates though do make scout v scout fights more enjoyable, but for the most part I didn't notice that much difference in my performance. But the visual aspects of fast paced game play are more enjoyable. I personally found that I greatly prefer 120Hz with lightboost over 144Hz. It just almost completely eliminates screen tearing/motion blur and things look buttery smooth.
