Hmm, I feel like that could be a good part of it. But I do know the theory of "women are worse at math", is not because of stereotype threat (concept you are referring to). It's more likely social/cultural reasons, as both gaming and math aren't exactly seen as attractive feminine activities. And is that man's fault? Well yeah probably.
So I think women are CAPABLE of being just as good at games as guys, but that their are a ton of social reasons and cultural expectations that make it harder for them to reach the same level.

but probably the biggest reason women don't usually make it past open is because of the widespread sexism that is either actively promoted or passively tolerated by virtually all of the influential figures in the community. why bother to put in the effort to improve for a community that's hostile to you from the start because of something beyond your control? most people aren't that invested in a video game

This showmatch is really just a way of getting more females interested in competitive TF2.
I help moderate r/teamfortresstwox on reddit and frequent r/girlgamers and both subreddits were talking about playing more TF2 together, for funzies. Both to get a taste for a more competitive side of the game and to play with more females.
Personally I've been really lucky and found an awesome team of guys to play TF2 with, but not all girls have been as lucky as I have. If we're able to create an environment for ladies to play comp, make mistakes and not feel like they're letting thier gender down I'm gonna do that.
Each team is captained by my two good friends and it's going to be freaking awesome to watch (even though I'll be at work, boo).

Because I'm a proud GUY GAMER who takes offense at people trying to purport this "all-ladies" game as something other than what it obviously is... a vehicle for the misandrist majority to make their way into competitive tf2, formerly the last bastion of real virility.
