I play Iron highlander as a scout and my mentor says that most highlander scouts go to 6s because of bs weapons like the soda popper and such so my question is why not a "Serious" highlander league where most weapons are banned like in 6s? I really like highlander but my mentor says there's so much bullshit it that it makes scouts wanna quit.

UGC is really the only NA HL league there is and their philosophy has pretty much always been "allow everything that isn't undeniably, blatantly broken" so if you want less unlocks and play highlander you're probably out of luck.

Even if you banned stuff just like 6s HL would still be full of annoying bullshit. No one really wants to play against an engineer, a perma sniper, and a perma heavy, especially if you're the scout. Also the fact that there are 50% more players really lowers the scouts impact on the game and makes his low health hurt him even more.

It's not so much a UGC vs ESEA issue as it is a difference in philosophy between 6v6 and HL as a whole. ETF2L highlander has very similar allowed unlocks to UGC.

The idea for 6v6 choosing what and what not to ban has always been "ban everything that isn't fun to play against." This leads to banning out most of the unlocks in the game and only ever playing one map type.
Highlander tries to make a competitive mode that actually resembles the stock game, by making as few arbitrary rules as absolutely possible; item bans will always be arbitrary rules from an outside perspective, even if they are for well-justified reasons. This leads to a lot of things that some people don't like being left in the game (soda popper, the pyro class, etc).

And highlander with the ESEA whitelist would be much worse than highlander right now. Teams would literally choose to turtle on second instead of attempting to go to the midfight because it will take too long for the heavy and engie to rollout without gru/disciplinary action/gunslinger.

it honestly just means you need to play better lol

i have a lot of respect for good highlander scouts, because it's absolutely awful getting around pyros, heavies, sentries, and the other multitude of things that can kill you in a few seconds while still hitting your shots or scouting out info to make a difference

i think the main point of observation is that a lot of the top highlander scouts that transition into 6s usually end up in high IM/invite pretty quickly or have played in 6s first and transitioned back to highlander

Points:

  • They don't talk about Highlander, or UGC at all in ESEA. It's an unspoken, but highly forbidden subject.
  • Every class that is part of the 6s core (Scout, Soldier, Demo, and Medic) tends to be considered worse in Highlander (I mean, as a Medic, do you really want three more people on you, two being 24/7 Sniper and Spy?)
  • Weapons like Soda Popper have great advantages and great disadvantages. Soda Popper's greatest disadvantage is if you're versing a Scout who's running stock, you're screwed. But if you can avoid Scout v. Scouts, which aren't incredibly difficult in Highlander, have fun abusing the hell out of that thing.

The title doesn't really match its first post, but I guess it should be explained:

ESEA is already close to not wanting to support 6s TF2, and given the burden of Highlander, there's no way ESEA would ever want to take it on.

Some of the more "serious" players in Highlander use the potentially abusable weapons. Ibby could be an example, I suppose.

Highlander's major component is adaptability. Learning to deal with stupid weapons and strategies is part of that format's game. If you want stability, 6s is your place.
