Twitch now scanning VODs for copyrighted content

I know there's already another thread about VODs, but I think this is major enough for another thread.

Twitch has put up a new blog post detailing how they will deal with copyrighted audio in streams: http://blog.twitch.tv/2014/08/3136/

Basically, you can stream music while broadcasting right now, but you're still liable. You just won't be as liable since most audio that would get you a DMCA violation would be muted.

The biggest issue I have with this is that if there's copyrighted audio detected, the 30-minute chunk it's in will be muted. The whole thing. So I was thinking that this could affect TFTV VODs because of the pre- and post-game music; if the cast happens to be in the same 30-minute chunk as the detected music, then part of the cast is lost.

Additionally, this part concerns me:

This includes in-game and ambient music.

I hope that means just licensed commercial music (Guitar Hero, Just Dance, DDR, etc.) and not music made for games.

Anyway, thoughts?

I think it actually muting game soundtracks probably won't happen. At least I hope it won't, expecting everyone to stream things like single player games with no music would be ridiculous.

Why would you copyright game music on a website dedicated to video game streaming?

truktruk: no more pregame music

They didn't think it through.

EDIT: VODs have to be way more involved now.

Today I looked at my favorite vods and they were all muted. "Portions of this video has been muted due to copyright" entire vods have no sound. Thanks a lot google. EleGiggle

Alright but the real question is can they fuck up even more? Usually when we complain to them, they respond with something even worse.

i wonder how long until a service pops up that can streamers pay for that will record your streams live and have them available on their website for you and your viewers as VODs. (for people without the storage space to record locally several hours of gameplay)

Give it a few weeks to work this new service out and then they'll start muting live streams.

People blaming Twitch for this needs to understand that they're not doing this just because they hate people. They're doing this to protect themselves against the music industry, especially the RIAA. The RIAA doesn't understand the concept of free advertisement (most of the gaming industry does, however). It was inevitable that this was going to happen, and this is apparently the best they could do. It could have been much, much worse. I'm talking zero-tolerance policy worse.

Let's be honest, if the RIAA had it's way, we'd still be on vinyl records. They are THAT dense.

everybody trying to save their highlights from the riaa at the same time

wouldn't this entirely kill streaming rhythm games like osu and stepmania?

(i guess only for certain songs)

edit: i have confirmation that entire osu streams are muted

If the RIAA had its way, we'd still be in the 1950s technologically. And I'm not just talking about music.

how the fuck can the music industry seriously think that video game streams are detrimental to their profits? there's no way it can be profitable to have thousands of lawyers throwing their dicks around stopping anyone from actually doing anything.

gonna be pretty blunt here, this is so fucking stupid. we all saw it coming but content id on youtube still doesn't work properly and from what I've heard from friends who stream regularly their vods are like 3/4 to fully muted.

At least it doesn't affect live broadcasts :\

Though its a huge pain in the ass if you actually want to highlight a vod or put anything on YouTube. Maybe start local recording everything as well on obs?

So is Hitbox gonna get big soon?

The really small stream delay and no content ID are making it look pretty good.

WariSo is Hitbox gonna get big soon?

twitch used to have a really small delay as well, but then it became significantly more popular. i think the hitbox delay is so low because they only have a fraction of the users. doesn't twitch account for something like 8% of total bandwidth in the US? that's a crazy high number.

That probably will be the way to go, unless there's something better, or this new "policy" or whatever is modified to not be so over-the-top.

It sucks though, I had a lot of somewhat old Twitch channels bookmarked for their VODs specifically and a good chunk of them are ruined now just because of something small like this.
