Do you PUG? Why/Why Not?

I'd say that at least 75% of the games I've played on #tf2mix have been fun, it's been a good way for me to get into 6s, and games generally get going pretty quickly.

kevno one adds med aside from the usual pug.na medics

As somebody that has played a lot of pug medic (both in 6s and HL) this is caused by:
#1 people prefer to play other classes
#2 there's a significant amount of people who are just simply a dick to their medic and this discourages people from adding up

#1 isn't something that's fixable, but everyone can work on #2; if there's a scout on your team that runs around say "HEAL ME I NEVER GET ANY HEALS HEAL ME I AM IMPORTANT" or there's somebody that pours on the abuse if they die, step in and say something.

Think of a pug as a way to play with a different group of people and give a little constructive criticism to new players instead of a way to stomp some nerds and everyone will be happier.

Last few times I tried playing in tf2mix I had some random people I've never heard of try to tell me how to play the game.

PUG.NA is kind of a burst thing for me. I'll have the occasional few days where I'll play a good amount, then I won't play it again for months. Generally I like playing them, though occasionally you'll get the person who's completely silent unless he's telling you that you suck at videogames.

Haven't really played any lobby type games since 2011 or something. They just feel like 6v6 pubs.

I love RaysPUGs though. They're almost always a lot of fun.
In-house PUGs are great too.

I usually inhouse pug whenever someone invites me. I used to pug in stuff like tf2mix or pug.na, but I stopped because I don't like mix and pugna is kinda dead too.

On the trying hard part, I think that it depends on what the goal of the people who play it is. If everybody just wants to have a good time, it doesn't really matter if they don't play extremely seriously, but if everybody wants to improve, then they should be playing as seriously as if it was a match/scrim.

i pug because my team is awful (including me) and it's the highest level competition i can get :C

tf2mix picking is pretty nice, you're guaranteed to play and it's pretty active, although lately there's been a lot of permasniping and fucking around and being mean that wasn't there before :[

if there really aren't any meds on pug.na maybe i'll check it out?

inhouse pugs are fun, i never know when they're going on though so i don't play them often

Rayspugs usually find the middle ground of trying hard and messing around to the point where neither are annoying, and I like most of the people that usually play there. Other than that I don't really play much tf2 right now.

If I have time and actually want to play a pug I'm forced to do tf2center(which is fine!) because the irc channels seem to have died.

Also, I'm pretty sure if people want high skill level pugs(people that play in ESEA/CEVO), I think the best option would be to create a steam group and use tf2center with a passworded lobby or something.

I generally do both inhouse and try to get into pugna. Tf2mix is just not for me. When pugging though I've tried to limit myself from playing scout (my main class) when playing with friends because I don't want to be labeled as a tryhard but I am not anywhere near good enough to play any other class. When playing pugna though I feel the need to tryhard and try to prove myself so I can get picked for future games. To be honest though ill always take an inhouse pug over pugna because usually inhouse have the perfect mix of goofiness and serious play.

The tf2mix pugs always seem to end up with one team trolling while steamrolling, and the other team getting really mad, so they are never a fun experience for me. I remember having a lot of fun playing in pug.na a while back, but nowadays it seems that either nobody else is in the channel, or it's all high level players and I never get picked. Every other pug in pug.na seems to have roughly the same 12 players in it.

The best pugs I've had are in-house ones, but I'm not always available when those seem to happen, so I generally just play tf2center.

I'd love to be able to pug more seriously with higher level players on a more consistent basis. Because I don't have enough time to actually play on a team atm, it's the only way for me to play 6s. I know that it's probably ridiculous to hope for this, but I'd love a pug group that actually takes it kind of seriously, a way for me to have a substitute for 6v6 scrims with actual teams.

#1 isn't something that's fixable.

i feel you on #2 but i think you can definitely fix the people just adding up to play med in pugs

to me there's just a lot more resistance in pug.na for a regular fragging class player to play med once in a while to get pugs going

Actually one of the reasons I stopped playing mix, some guy who always added scout (think it was one of the admins) would do this so much.

In-house pugs - best way to meet new people and invite people who everyone would enjoy playing with. Typically I like the pugs to be try-hard pugs. In-house pugs to me are the closest to scrims. In the fact that most in-house pugs invite people who are close to the average person in the pug's skill-level.
TF2 mix - if I am desperate to play and no one else on my friends list wants to
TF2 center - if I just want to chill out with a friend or two and make sure we're on the same team. Mostly to goof off.
slinOne thing I've noticed is that pug culture is extremely important - if people tryhard, then everyone tryhards. If people goof off, everyone goofs off. Is tryharding important for pugs? Would tryhard pugging incentivize you to pug more often?

Yes to both. If everyone wants tryhard, then yeah tryhard. If everyone agrees to playing goofy. Then play goofy. Just needs to be something the puggers understand starting the game.

IMO I would prefer every one trying for the most part. But the goofy pugs are fun sometimes to let out some steam/just chill/have a few laughs.

I am wondering what has killed interest in tf2.pug.na specifically. It's sort of reviving again but just a month or so ago multiple pugs were happening at once and now lately it's down to 1-2 pugs a day. There was even a week where only 1 pug happened the entire week.

Does the network switch have anything to do with it? Is it just because it's a hectic season?

On the bright side the quality of the 1-2 pugs are pretty high now.

Maybe cause most invite/top players don't ever do invite pug anymore and they just use the Tf2.pug.na system to play thier so called invite pug and they just pick the same people over and over to the point where theres no reason to add because by the time your pug ends the same people who were just playing add back to pick the same people who just played.

speaking of pugs, we should get one going in mix. 4 ppl added. usually the time people start adding anyway.

I'd like to work on some more skills before I go pug [stuff like practicing aim, jumping, not dying to stupid things] since I think I should get those basics at a better level. I would rather not subject other people to my lack of aim.

Also I'm not 100 percent sure where to go since most pugs seem to demand a higher level of play than I can give, or they're inhouses.

Back when TF2Lobby was "decent" and had somewhat competitive players. Since TF2Center came out, I'm hoping the same. Just really wished peeps use mumble more. I hop onto TF2Center whenever I've the chance so I can pug with decent guys. Definitely better alternative than waiting a long, long time in tf2mix.

PUGs are okay if played in a competitvely fun manner. I rather get dunk'd on than to see 3-4 different off-class and we proceed to stomp on them then bs happens like the server "disconnecting."

So what you're saying is you'd rather invite pugs happen separately instead of a chance to play with the invite scene? I mean I could get invite pugs going again if it meant people would be more inclined to use the pug.na channel if that was what was preventing people from using it.. but I'm not really buying it at this point

to tag along with what cyzer said, I've noticed that the pug channels are being used with less frequency these days, and when they are used it's usually the same people adding up. in many ways it's just another inhouse pug that occasionally invites others to play.

what would make more people inclined to use those public channels?
I'm sure it would be nice to get some fresh faces in there.

If it means sub-IM players won't get 24/7 fatkidded on pug.na, then yes, absolutely.

If you want to encourage people to add up to the ircs, there should be some sort of system that makes sure they won't waste hours of their time because nobody wants to pick them.

I do worse in scrims/matches after playing pugs. I only play them when I'm really bored or when someone directly asks me to late at night.

tf2center is alright for highlander, but it's just as bad as lobby for 6s. Every game will have either permanent offclassers or intentionally throwing players.

Only time I've really enjoyed pugging has been inhouse games
