We have to figure out a way to get involved with MLG, look at the size of this crowd... Thatd be sick to see at a TF2 Lan, or rather have the Finals at the MLG showcase.

The ESEA LAN concept does not intend for a crowd, afaik.
To have TF2 at an event with a large crowd would be awesome, I agree. I doubt it is going to happen too soon, probably next time at i49.

I remember back during natf2, we won the MLG poll or something for TF2 to be in MLG...then Halo 4 got in.

As much as all of us on these forums would love to see this, there are a ways to go before it can happen; namely, having a massive spectator base.

Why? Because running an event at something like MLG is pretty expensive; it requires an investment. Somewhere, something has to guarantee that a sponsor (most likely, a sponsor for something like this is absolutely required; IPL, and MLG, I'm guessing, is hesitant to pick up a game if the developer is not involved) will make a return on the money.

So, really, what we should be focusing on is growing the playerbase; sponsors, and of course, tournaments, will come naturally after that.

Getting into mlg doesn't get you a crowd like that. You still have to be popular to get people to actually go. And that's assuming the game is successful enough there and doesn't eventually get dropped like a lot of other, more popular games have done.

Not enough people care about comp TF2 to go to one of those events and be a spectator.

They would rather watch people with assault rifles run around and throw knives at each other.

Fact of the matter is, eSports is still incredibly new; this means sponsors will go to only 2, maybe 3 games at most. That's LoL and SC2. FPSes just aren't popular right now.

Again, it all boils down to stream viewership, literally.

hey make comp tf2 popular in asia is a good way
I don't think u can get much more NA population to play comp tf2
valve will start supporting if the population reaches their "satisfactory level", dota2 is a good example^

That million dollar tournament thingy Valve announced before dota 2 released was some sort of accounting error?

Valve would probably have to pony up the cash to put their games on a stage like MLG, and they have explicitly said they won't do that. They'd rather put the cash into something they have total creative control over, like the international.

Whoever said "The international 2013 (tf2)" is a genius though. Even just a sideshow to their main DOTA event would be fantastic.

Those people are there because they specifically want to see SC2, LoL or CoD. They are not there just to watch whatever arbitrary game is on.

The viewership numbers would need to increase by at least an order of magnitude before putting on major TF2 tournaments would be even in the realm of reasonable consideration.

I don't get it. Valve seem to be all about supporting esports for cs go and dota 2. Why not tf2? They know it's a thing but it's almost as if they don't want people to go from dota and cs to tf2. The only thing I can think of is that dota has the new banner system in which valve can monetise completitive matches. But still, couldn't they implement something like that into tf2? I really think tf2 can go so far as an esport but publicity is the bottleneck, at least in my opinion

the games you listed were created in a competitive mind set. Tf2 is mostly a pub game.

Its really simple. Pubs in dota2/csgo are at least the same format as competitive play, the only difference is the skill of the players. Tf2 pubs are completely different format, maps, weapons, and player skill.

Not to mention we ban a good portion of the weapons that valve makes. they make money off those weapons. so fiscally the smartest thing for them to do is keep doing what they are doing and pleasing the mass pyro reddit readers that have no idea what is happening but holy shit they love unicorns and pointless weapons.

I had this idea and I started sketching up a ticket system similar to Dota's, and here's what would make it work. When you're watching the big games, just like Dota, you receive a chance of an item drop when someone makes a big play, or if you have a team banner. I think this would make both Valve (people buying tickets and they get a cut of the profits) and the community happy and would grow the comp game.

Plus it would make the players who normally play in pubs watch the games and that kind of thing!

The only way TF can become popular competitively is if a TF3 of some sort comes out. People have this mindset that TF2 is just a non-serious pub game, and it's caused by how Valve markets the game and the weapons they add. Maybe if a 6s matchmaking system is added, competitive TF2 would become more popular, but the fact that we ban a lot of the weapons is a major setback. Hopefully if Valve decides to release a third TF that they work closely with us to make sure weapons are balanced, that there's 6s and Highlander modes, etc.

because they have larger comp population base
all the pub players can be potential comp players
so they can bring more "PROFIT" from comp game to valve, remember companies care most about money
yeah and i think the chance of bringing comp tf2 or even fps back to the mainstage esport is slim unless some miracle happen
if we want to make comp tf2 prosperous, we have to make more people play tf2 competitively, not the other way around.

Hey it's this discussion again.

Nothing is going to happen unless you stop talking among yourselves and start talking to Valve/big league employees. (And even then it's unlikely.)
