blinKI'm a GM at a LA Fitness in NYC. If I was a part time pizza delivery guy or something that's a different story. You could just quit and get another pizza delivery job it wouldn't really matter. In the corporate world your boss doesn't care about your hobbies he cares about the numbers at the end of the day. If i'm not there the numbers won't be good and that's pretty much it. Also it hurts my own paycheck from commissions/bonus standpoints. I can't really complain because I make a good amount of money but that's how it is for me which sucks in regards to my love for video games. Hard having a real career and playing competitive TF2. Also after thinking about it i'd rather spend vacation hours having a real vacation in Cabo or something. Not everyone is in the same boat as me obviously but i'm sure there's some.

Smaka is really the only person in tf2 i've met that has a real career that can take off when he needs too. He has a good job. His damn beeper blows up 24/7 though lol

Now, where do the 4 of you work at?

I think the problem is you've got a shitty job where you can't get vacations at all and they expect your job to be your life. Any decent job anymore will give you days off if you ask for them, or give you vacation time you can split up - even that part time pizza delivery job you mention.

Now why does the rest of your management staff not have the ability to work a few weekend a year without you around?

orbital sciences on a nasa contract

if i was on a lan team i would literally take 3 days off a year at maximum for tf2. more likely I would work extra hours at te beginning of the week or only take a half day on friday

also thats not how the corporate world is, that's just how your shitty boss is

Pizza delivery jobs are minimum wage. You could replace that quickly with just about any job.

My job is tough in regards to the shifts involved and leniency on days off. Winter is our busy season so I usually take my week vacations in the summer. Making over 100k a year though isn't something that anyone can obtain real easily and it's necessary for me since i'm getting married soon and want little baby binkles running around eventually. My position over sees all facets of the gym but i'm mainly responsible for sales and marketing. If i'm not there to produce the numbers drop immediately and then I lose money. My staff could hold up the fort but not produce to its capability without full man power. That's besides the point though if I wanted to take random 3 day vacations without much notice, my District VP would still have to approve them which is where my road block occurs. I could probably get away with it with a good enough excuse but it's just going to lose me a lot of money in commissions/bonus.

Yeah frkn i'd probably be on the same boat as you. 3 days max a year for LAN. I don't think 3x a year would be possible.

blinKI work full time and would be able to pay myself to LAN however i'm not sure if my employer would like me leaving for a 3 day vacation to go compete in a video game tournament in Texas just to earn back what I shelled back to fly there and dorm.

Dude, it's called a hobby. You don't travel to a LAN to make boatloads of money. You do it for the fun.

I do play for fun and it is a hobby. But money definitely has a lot to do with it in the end. That's why I brought this all up in the first place relating to all the donations needed and then putting in my own perspective on how it would be for me, someone who doesn't need donations but it wouldn't make much sense for me to go.

Well I don't work weekends so 3 days a year would be every lan for me. I guess if I worked weekends it might be more complicated, since I want to do other vacations too

So if I have an important exam in the weekend of the LAN I should sacrifice my academic record in order to play video games.

Your solution is to cater to people with full time jobs who work weekends and don't want to burn PTO? I'd say you're in the minority and you've never made LAN. I can think of plenty of people that have gone to LAN with full time careers, myself included. I don't make money attending LAN, but I don't make money vacationing anywhere. I used to travel around the country for soccer and rugby tournaments, and the prize pot was always $0. I find it strange how much emphasis is on money in video game tournaments of all places.

I mean, honestly, it's partly because you live in the US.

The government here in the ol' US of A doesn't really give a fuck that they are the only nation among advanced economies that does not provide a legal guarantee of paid leave.

Are you serious? 50K a year would be fantastic and way more than enough with marriage and children on the horizon

I mean, there's personal fulfillment through advancing in your career, and then there's being a greedy asshole who only cares about his net worth

It kinda depends on where you live. My wife turned down a job that she wanted that was in DC, but the cost of living is about double of Ohio. So that 50K would really be less than 25K in certain places. I sure that NYC and DC are very close when it comes to price of living.

I do kinda get your point that he seemed to be bragging more then anything else.

I can tell you from personal experience, that 50k with a family is rough. 3 years ago when my son was born i was making slightly above that. I could never have justified going to LAN nor realistically afford it (without some other type of sacrifice). I live outside Pittsburgh, and cost of living isn't bad here either...but i was definitely living tight until i got my last promotion at work.

Don't get me wrong, i'd love to go to a LAN. I love having video games as a hobby, but times change. I stopped playing invite after s5 because priorities and mindsets became focused on more important things. Spending time with my family and advancing my career to be a good provider is my focus, not 20+ hour weeks of TF2 like i use to do. Everyone will hit that road at some point, so be open minded. Just because you can take vacation and go to LAN, doesn't mean you have to if you feel it can be used for something better.

Staten Island is considered NYC. There are 5 boroughs in NYC. Manhattan, Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx. I run the Staten Island location.

Lights: 100k is really on the low end. The GM's at busier gyms make even more. LA Fitness is really big, luxury and has alternating pricing which allows us to run a sales system similar to car sales. Research it more than the time you already wasted if you want to find out for yourself.

It depends on the club though. You get a % of your monthly EFT as bonus.

So for example, my paycheck with bonus is 1000 base, +300 OT, +commissions (1500), +60%(gross/eft)4000 every 2 weeks. The bonus is critical to make over six figures though. That's where the good gm's flourish and the bad ones get demoted and someone else steps in. It's a very lucrative business. That's why missing 2 days could miss me 4k.

Dagger, why stop? It's a forum for talking not just trolling..

Me and Phaser probably have a much different outlook on this because we're a bit older than the average guys in invite. I just turned 28. Different strokes for different folks I guess. I was just giving my perspective/opinion on it.
