fsXDrunescape gave me 130 wpm

runescape was the best for unintentional typing training, especially for those of us too stubborn to use an autotyper when buying/selling things

do other mmo's apply? i figured it was because i didn't have to press enter to type and ended up trying to type while clicking around the game

I used my two index fingers for about 16 years until I learnt to touch-type. It's like learning Chinese after speaking English all your life - it's hard. Worth it in the end though, (and no it doesn't take as long as it takes to learn Chinese)!

I remember back in elementary school, there was this game meant to help kids learn how to type. It was probably one of the funnest things I ever did at that time. I wish I could remember the name of it :s

In elementary school they advertised these courses to parents, so I took the course when I was 10 or something. Personally, I think it is really nice to be able to type with 8 fingers, but I think it really depends on what you're used to. If you've typed with 2 fingers, or some method of your own, for all your life, I can imagine that you'd be just as fast as anyone who took a course. I think if you would start learning it now, it would feel really unnatural and you'd easily switch back. So it's just what you're comfortable with yourself :)

I read some where that gamers usually only use their "gaming fingers" when they type. So I only use my wasd and m1+m2 fingers when I type, which is kinda weird. Left pinky/thumb and right pinky/ring/thumb are just not as dextrous I guess.

I tend to disagree with many of these posts. I type incorrectly-- I use my left hand on caps lock, a, s, d. I use my left pinky for almost nothing except tab, caps lock, shift, and ctrl. My right hand is primarily just my index finger flying around with a few other fingers thrown in the mix randomly if I have to press multiple right-hand keys in a row. I still type around 110 WPM. Typing 'correctly' is not really important as long as you develop the proper muscle memory to type in whatever way you want.

Having said that, I will say that programming does require you to type tons of otherwise abnormal key combinations (primarily symbols like parenthesis, etc). If you are not comfortable hitting those keys without looking at the keyboard, typing your way will be a chore when programming.

Maybe we should all just get another keyboard, configure it for dvorak or colemak, and go all out on learning something better. I love the dvorak layout on my phone.

I type 100 wpm using standard home key setup or whatever you wanna call it. Sometimes I don't use my pinky for backspace and other faraway keys for no good reason. I also cannot stand to watch people type with their index fingers, lol.

I had soooo many typing classes growing up. And here I thought Indiana was pretty shit :/ I guess I should thank them for that.

I would recommend learning to type for college in general lol. Given, I majored in history, so all I did was write, but you're going to run into classes that want you to write a lot and having a decent wpm is going to make things take a lot less time.

1 bottle of wine, 12 hours, 40 pages of research paper never forget.

you might want to just stick with typing with your index fingers and focus on improving your speed and accuracy. 60wpm isn't terrible and you could probably crank that shit to 100+ with less effort than it would take to re-learn how to type off of homerow or whatever.

i can type 140+ wpm using just my index fingers without an issue so it isn't like there is some physical cap on what you can do using that

actually there is a limitation to how fast you can type with 2 fingers. if you can do 140+wpm with 2 fingers (id love to see you prove that btw) you'd be able to do like 200 with good technique.
@op: dont gimp yourself by using 2 fingers instead of 9.

If you can type 140 wpm with 2 fingers, that means you're pressing 7 keys a second with each finger, right?
