What I do is spam A and D and walk my crosshair into them. It's kinda hard to time my shot correctly though. Is there anything else I should be doing? Like waiting for them to walk into my crosshair instead of strafing into them? Or do I just need more practice? If I need more practice, do you guys have any general or specific tips? Sorry to all you pro scouts who are facepalming at this post.

even if people dont give you tips, a process that one could try to compare to natural selection will occur, when you do something right you will keep using that technique that worked, and if something doesnt work you will over time start to stop using that technique. So the strats and dm techniques that work stay with you and the ones that dont naturally drop out of your game.

YOOO.. I have the worst AIM and DM in the game so take these with a grain of salt.. is how i think that saying goes.

Anyway, You should really focus on your movement. Try not to just be ADADADAD in the middle of there crosshair, it pays off more to stay out of their crosshair/FOV than to just jiggle around within it. Also if you can move to their sides, you'll have an easier shot than they will, there is a name for this like idk i forgot but like basically, It's hard to dodge someone to the side of you so you can gain advantages that way. Also try to focus on your movement while your aiming so that it dosen't throw off your aim, a lot of the time people tend to make their shot a lot harder than it needs to be by moving around way to much, it's hurting your aim more than it's hurning theirs. So your shots should be like calm, only moving around excessivly to dodge the opponents shots, and taking your shots with simpler movements so that they are more accurate.

-anyway there is my shpiel. Hope it helps. :)

also DM alot. lol it's the only way

This is coming from the worst scout in IM. As with all dm, try and imagine what you would do in their position and play off that. Try and take into consideration their confidence. Health/buffs of both you and him and what they did in 1v1's before. In terms of just aiming and dodging, just keep practicing.

My personal rankings in terms of improving anything.
Match > Scrims > Pugs without off classing > DM server > MGE.

Again I'm shit so ignore this if you want.

If you need to preface your post with a "lol I'm bad" disclaimer, you probably shouldn't be giving advice.
Fastest way to improve scout v scout is to get a 120hz monitor, makes adadad scouts really easy to hit.
Don't jump or do anything silly that throws off your aim (don't let this become a habit or you'll get wrecked by soldiers).
Two more habits to avoid - waiting for them to strafe into your cursor and trying to move to their sides. Both work very well against people who don't mge often but you'll be butchered by decent players once they pick up on it.
Do the above and mge for about a hundred hours and you're all set.

learning to twitch and correct your aim on the fly quickly really helps, and playing sniper is great twitch practice

Only jump against hitscan at close range and make sure to airstrafe.

Randomly standing still for a quarter of a second can screw with peoples heads if you don't do it too often and time it right.

Just jump once and not twice because they will expect you to double jump (more useful for soldiers though lol)

If you get a meatshot or have way more health than the opposing scout, back up a little bit because you only need to do 22 damage and he needs to do 125. This should help you avoid getting a good first shot then missing the rest and dieing.

You are learning that you can't rely on dm all the time. But this is good! You will quickly learn that playing with your team will net you better fights. Think about how teams focus fire. If you are chasing a kill alone, how will your team help you? They can't. So bring the fight to them instead of +forwarding dumb shit.

Play dirty. Stack the favor in your odds, eg. taking 2v1s or 3v1s instead of 1v1 or 1v2. Shoot people in the back. Follow up on damage

You can try this out in soap dm and see the difference when you take 1v1s vs playing off your teams damage.

Hate to harp on this topic but gamesense >>>> dm. If you pick your fights wisely, you don't necessarily need to hit every shot.

To answer your original question: practice. But I wanted to point out that you shouldn't look at how you can improve 1v1 match ups, because you shouldn't be taking them if you can help it.

Dodecagon Try not to just be ADADADAD in the middle of there crosshair, it pays off more to stay out of their crosshair/FOV than to just jiggle around within it.

Not necessarily. If a scout stays in front of me I'll miss literally everything, but the moment he strafes out of my view I usually manage to snap my aim and hit him.

..but maybe I'm just abnormal and awful at TF2.

don't ever jump vs scouts

you are only making my job easier.

scout vs scout is more about w and s than a and d. If you have an advantage then dont let go of w, if you don't....dont be a retard why u going forward? see post 8 for some advantages

Scholar, I think there are some cases where you should jump, like if you can jump over their heads to disorient them.

flipperseven if people dont give you tips, a process that one could try to compare to natural selection will occur, when you do something right you will keep using that technique that worked, and if something doesnt work you will over time start to stop using that technique. So the strats and dm techniques that work stay with you and the ones that dont naturally drop out of your game.

That would work if no other variables ever came into play, such as skill level, style of play of enemy scouts, how well you're playing that day, what map you're on, etc

airstrafe while jumping so you dont get stuck in one position that basically makes you easy to shoot, when scouts do this to me i can easily get decent 50+ dmg on them

I... I have a question,
What cl_interp should I have for scout? I change it sometimes when I'm playing like shit and I magically start hitting shots more often. Maybe it's just the placebo effect coming into play but I heard the interp setting needs to change depending on your ping/which weapon you are using (projectile/hitscan)

0.033 as for interp, but I don't think it really matters that much unless it's orange/yellow.

Unless they catch on, I found strafing in a circle around the other scout as best as I can to work well. If you're in a position to do that, it hardly seems like they're moving and makes your aim and predicting their movement better. For me, at least.

interp will affect how accurately the engine "guesses" entity (player) positions between update frames where it knows exactly where everything is

but only if you happen to lose an update or have an update choked pretty much exactly (within a ~15ms window) of when you fire

and only if the player changes velocity within that same timeframe

basically it has a very slight effect on hit reg unless your connection is megafucked and if you suddenly start hitting a ton more shots it is like a mental issue

that said 1/updaterate (.015) is the "ideal" interp in that it is closest to "real-time" assuming a perfect connection but hitscan classes don't really lose anything by being an extra 15ms behind and can actually gain a slight (negligible) advantage when peeking and online connections are rarely perfect so you may as well set it to 2/updaterate (.03)

or u can be like bloodsire and imagine that interpolation of entity position is somehow based on ping and have like 18 different binds for different interps which you mash randomly whenever you miss a shot

your call
