Inject recorded team comms into TF2 demos

I created a browser-based tool that allows you to inject external audio into TF2 demos, so you can review your gameplay and team communication together.

Website: https://tf2-demo-external-comms-injector.plasmatech8.workers.dev/

Source code: https://github.com/plasmatech8/tf2-demo-external-comms-injector

Currently, there are two main ways to review your games:

  1. Demo playback, which allows you to use freecam, but doesn't let you hear your external team comms.
  2. Video recordings, which allow you to hear your comms, but limit you to the perspective of whoever recorded the video.

The website I built is an open-source, client-side app that injects audio from an external recording into the demo itself, so it plays through TF2's built-in voice chat system as though it came from a specific player. This allows you to use TF2's normal demo playback while hearing your comms, with the audio staying synchronized even after pausing/resuming or changing the playback speed.

All you need is your demo recording (e.g. from demos.tf) and an audio or video recording of your game, preferably with separate audio tracks so you can inject the comms without the game audio. Just plug them into the website and generate the modified demo.

One limitation is that the resulting audio isn't as clean as the original recording, since it goes through TF2's voice chat system, but it's good enough for reviewing games.

Feel free to try it out for your own competitive demo reviews. Feedback is welcome!

works great so far, its pretty hard to understand comms when it gets messy due to the tf2 voice chat filter but wcyd.

an issue that i came across is that the voices recorded by discord become alien noise for a few seconds every now and then, but it's an OBS thing (and im not sure how to fix it)

this is a great tool that i will definitely be using, ty

I have been looking into some of the audio issues. These workarounds have sometimes helped:

Low volume: Pause/resume, or change playback speed and return to normal.
Echo: Alt-tab out of TF2 and back in.
Garbled/alien audio: Pause/resume seems to help, although I have not reproduced this consistently.

These are not permanent fixes. Pausing and changing playback speed can also trigger the same issues. I have not found any changes to the generated demos that reliably fix them. They may be related to TF2's voice playback system, but I have not confirmed the cause.
