Okay buddy boyos, it's time I spread my horizons and post a little rantie-doodle on da Tee Eff Tee Vee there. *hocks loogie*

Really disliking having to know a guy that knows a guy to get me into one of these pug servers that isn't dead. It seems like if you don't completely corner the market for some niche in your server that it's likely to due out from internal conflict in the next three months and you can delay the inevitable if you implement some sort of circlejerk.

If you do manage to get in one you would be hard pressed to not be fatkidded and left until the end of the pug where everyone decides to go home and you never get to play. I had that happen to me a couple times. Not fun.

This is the cause of the looming Discord-ification that has plagued the userbase of sites probably like this one, but I noticed a while ago that it's not quite limited to just the gaming-sphere but to every online industry as a whole. It was near impossible to not notice when it started hitting schools, going past the mainstream and becoming almost standard practice. Soon your grandma might be posting about how she loves Wumpus in an image macro on Discord, or something to that effect.

Say what you want about tf2pugs.com or RGL pugs but at least they're trying to branch away somewhat from putting their eggs all in one basket with Discord. It's novel but Discord seems to be most convenient even after all this time.

Completely unrelated but, anyone remember a player named xlr back in the day? I remember him yelling something at me in a pug, maybe it was Gem Pugs or Platypugs or something like that. I think this had to be well over five years ago. I wonder where he is now.

If you liked this post, make sure you smash that updoot, I need muh dopamine and I need it now. Just felt like James Joyce steam-of-consciousness style slamming one of these out for you, an audience unfamiliar with my philosophidramedy stylings.

tangentially related to your topic OP, but i hate how if i want to ask questions or read up on a database of information on a new video game i want to play, why the fuck do i have to join a discord every time now? obviously i am biased because im nearly 30 years old, but what happened to the fucking forum man?

everything from games to creative hobbies to modding to extracurriculars, its all in fucking discord now with insufferable people who, when you ask a question like "where can i find item X?" they say "item X is bad. use item Y". granted you definitely had this flavor of individual when forums were still the dominant medium ("works on my machine!") but they almost seem the norm now, instructing you on what's right rather than being an avenue to ask questions

anyway yeah pugs should also just be on a website

i love how instead of listing the servers you're in alphabetically you just have to remember which icons are for which server.

i imagine one of the biggest reasons is that websites cost money and discord does not if you play your cards right

This is another big pill for people to swallow about the utter lack of making anything intuitive nowadays.

We've gone from trying to help the patron to actively hindering them by shoving essentially a wall of text in their face and go "figure it out yourself" which would be fine but these things are either poorly accessible or not properly archived and like you said, it's all under some personality that couldn't be bothered to not try and shaft me for no particular reason.

And it's not like with the age of technology that you can just ask an AI for this stuff either, because it would need to go through messages in a Discord first to find them.

Brimstonei imagine one of the biggest reasons is that websites cost money and discord does not if you play your cards right

That's a valid retort for things like the utility and cost-benefit analysis, but something still doesn't sit right with me on everyone insisting to use it when one day Discord could just come along and just kick everyone off because they felt like it or if it was hit by a giant EMP and stopped working we would lose all of those services.

Not to say that this can't happen if you are using a regular website that costs money and is hosted on a server somewhere, but it would be easier to recover if you already were more self-sufficient than just clicking a few buttons.

Convenience is nice and not everybody can just have a dedicated server computer running out of their house but I would like to believe that there is a better option.

people who make dmix servers typically just wish to play with their friends and don't want to work that hard, and a discord server has everything you need and is much easier to make than any alternative.

I've been waiting for something to replace discord for some time as it is way too bulky for being an overcomplicated Zoom call. I still hate when I have to talk over disc instead of literally anything else because of the input lag in-game.

The convenience it offers is offset by everything else on it being shit. Bring back user forums and dedicated websites.
