Kinda old stuff, but still relevant.

random medic tips:
-when its clear mid is lost, you back out
-if someone is still fighting and its just you and him versus 5 people, stop pocketing his ass, he's probably trying to cover your exit, losing mid and losing uber almost always means last point will be an easy win for them.
-learn how critical heals work
-learn how building with a pocket works
-analyze every time you die what you did wrong instead of just cursing yourself over it
-dont take out your needlegun if there is someone around unless the guy has 5-20 health and you know it
-learn when to switch between krits and regular uber
-stay back and have people come to you for heals, medics who over extend to heal people covering doors always get fucked
-learn the mechanics behind when to and when not to pop when a bad event occurs (soldier bombing, counted his rockets and he has one left and he's in front of you, direct damage from rocket = death if you're below 90 or so, you should pop to keep from "dropping")
never drop an uber ever
-dont blame your mistakes on others unless your pocket is really that retarded, unless its ESEA you still learn on your own
streams are a decent learning mechanic
-look for a UGC steel team maybe, or if you have friends start a team with them to make the initial experience a lot more fun. being friendly and having a tolerance against assholes will find you some great friends to play with.
-regardless of what might be evident, a willingness to improve is always met with good intentions. it's okay to ask others what you did wrong. if you're really lost find a mentor using the mentor subforum, and set up P-Rec (a service that records demos) and give some to him that you can watch with him. a more experienced friend is always a cool mentor too, since he wouldn't mind watching it too.

brings up a good point though, when you start off with no knowledge even lobbies are good, you learn fast when you have some dumbass kids yelling into your ear. and watch every single video of that MGE archive, it's pure gold.

Don't do lobbies. Just don't.

do whatever you have available to you that's best at the time. in some cases this is lobbies.

Lobbies teach you tons of really bad habits and doon't really teach you anything. Just an organized pub.

Hell a good pub (ie not lotus clan/valve server) is usually higher skill than lobbies.

#tf2mix should be great for you, even though the playerbase is generally newer to the scene, there's still a good amount of people who are really nice that should help you out

Yes. But Lol at how its literally full 24x7. One time a few months ago at 4am I got in when it was 22/23 but then 5 mins in I got kicked for reserved slot.

Get French nationality and obtain the well-deserved cheat we all get.
But you're gonna have to chose, it's either 2d Radar, Wireframe models or "Aimassist/ESP".

i just add up and it usually lets me join within a few minutes, but i guess i'm willing to wait a bit for 10 ping nocrits

WAT. Its literally full 24x7 I put it to wait until slot opens and auto join and it just sat there for 12 hours straight. But its usually the only pub with any good maps (ie swiftwater, croissant etc)

Just to echo the self discovery point, don't be afraid to do something that is completely nonstandard if you're really thinking about it in order to better understand how some mechanics in the game work. Put yourself in different positions, see what happens and learn from it, and know that what may work against one team won't always work against another and vice versa.

Damn Epoch that was literally amazing.

But here are my top 7 medic tips (and some extra learning tips) I try to think about while I play. Some might be a repeat of what you said.

1) Awareness when healing (ie heal the people outputting the damage) + dodging damage

2) Positioning- based upon uber advantage and team's health

3) Do not drop combo on ubers-- keep head on swivel and flash those who take damage

4) Keep head on spindle overall-- don't just focus on those you are healing in front of you

5) Never hesitate on pushes

6) Knowing overall advantages - ie other team's health + uber

7) Know your enemy- "being a good medic also requires good knowledge of the game and who you're playing against. if i know im playing against dashner i watch out for mackey offclasses/b4nny sticky traps, against experiment i would watch for wonderwall bombs and carnage +forwarding into the combo. i normally take into account who im playing against and position myself accordingly." - harbleu

Learning tips--

1) Confidence - try to always sound confident even if you are wrong your team will back you up more often

2) Take criticism from people you respect

3) Ability to control your own temper and you have to respect (or sometimes ignore) others' temperaments

4) Stay relaxed- "if you are too focused on staying alive you are not going to be focused on uber advantages or anything else. just go with the flow of the game and adjust as you play." - harbleu

5) Don't go to bed upset-- learn what you need to improve on. "... try not to fall asleep playing this stupid class fuckfuckfuck" - harbleu

And most of all whoever you decide to play with make sure people--- Keeping mental strength - don't criticize a medic during a game (brush off bad plays) and give credit for good plays where they are due

Decent medics are consistent and get their team to know when to expect heals for certain situations. Where as the best medics orchestrate their team into playing their best with their heals. So just encouraging the people around you to do certain things with heals.

Always stay a little over your head. Stomping pubs/lobbies is useless. So is playing pugs if you feel that you're topfragging every game. You should always be on-level with the people you're playing with, if not a little below them. Might make people mad at you at first, but just sit back and take in as much information as possible. Since you seem to want to main medic, people will love you in pugna/tf2mix, regardless of how much they bitch at you. Just stay in for the long haul, and you'll do fine.
