Anyone else find this format super lame/anticlimactic to watch? I see the lower seed go down a map and I'm pretty much instantly tuned out. Pretty sure the only time the lower seed team has climbed back is witness in s6? Surely the upper team could get some sort of pick/ban advantage that wouldn't make things so 1 sided.

Only advanced and invite 6s use this format as far as I know, even highlander does multiple best of 3's if the lower seed wins the first one. Always liked that format from a viewer perspective.

bracket reset is even harder for the lower bracket team to win than bo5 map adv tho

I feel like these games always feel pretty lopsided because they ARE lopsided-- the quality of the teams isn't that close, so it feels like it ends before it really gets going. If you had equally matched teams, the chances of winning 3 maps before the other team wins two wouldn't be THAT unlikely, but the reason you never see it is because the UB team is usually significantly better (in many of the recent RGL seasons).

Pick/ban advantage might make better viewing, but I'd wager a lot of those times it will just end up 3-0 or 3-1 and not be very close anyway. You should be rewarded with a significant advantage for not losing a WHOLE SERIES in playoffs. Pick/ban adv is not equivalent to losing a whole bo3 before, so that is generally considered too unfair for the UB team (u lose one series and u lose playoffs, other team lost one series but they are still alive)

how do u design an entertaining format in a scene where upsets almost never ever happen? double elim means theres more close matches overall but makes upsets even harder. single elim makes GF more exciting but creates some farcical matchups.

HamiPick/ban advantage might make better viewing, but I'd wager a lot of those times it will just end up 3-0 or 3-1

At least we'd get to see 3 maps though

HamiYou should be rewarded with a significant advantage for not losing a WHOLE SERIES in playoffs.

The reward is you get to be comfy for the rest of that day, plus an extra map pick is plenty advantage especially if they're the better team anyways

as people have already pointed out map advantage is still easier for the losers-sided team than the alternative of a bracket reset

i think your issue of being bored with grands is because one team has a leader whose career is tf2 and will just play with 5 of the best/most dedicated players whereas any other invite-winning teams will play on and off, so during an off season like this grands won't be competitive

it has happened 4 times since it has been implemented, first with WG in s6, then on lan froyo was knocked into lower bracket and came back in grands, G6 was also knocked into lower bracket s11 and came back, and most recently last season s13 froyo was knocked into lower bracket by WG. It is kinda lame but it makes winning UBF actually important

for reference it was first implemented s3 of RGL and there have been 4 upsets out of 11 seasons played. ALSO there had not been an upset (for maybe other reasons) in the previous format since before season 20 ESEA? and every time there was a close GFs it went until 3 in the morning.

Froyo doing it doesn't really count

I'd rather give the winners side team 2 map bans than a whole map

This complaint only comes around when Froyo win but it's still super valid. Especially with the absence of halftime, maps run shorter now. And I'm sure we can reschedule grands to a weekend and play in the afternoon.

unrelated but cant lie its pretty depressing that we just permanently removed half times / golden cap, some of the best games had teams adjust in half time or for golden cap, having it all be a marathon is much less interesting for viewers as well as harder on the players (I played a 70 minute match on lan lol), you can say 'just tac pause!' but that's not the same.

for viewers it's nice to look at stats and discuss after a halftime or before golden cap, and IMO the extra pressure for a team to adjust and discuss before readying up again makes it much more interesting (obviously more maps have a similar effect, but the current format just feels like a glorified pug lol)

the ability for losing team to always come back is great, but we can still have that win condition, but have a half time once the 30 mins runs out (it also means you have actual incentives and hype last second pushes--everyone remembers the granary match at iseries where it was capped at the literal last second)

just feels weird that this was slipped in along with the other format changes without much thought or discussion, are there any other esports or sports that do this type of no halfitme format? i think the concept of giving players a break at half time or before overtime should apply in esports as well, even though it's not as important as say football, where you can't expect them to play for 3 hours straight
