either my pc randomly became shitty or tf2 is just getting worse, but after the mvm update (maybe before didn't pay attention) i've been getting frequent fps drops from around 200+ to 50-60.

my specs are amd phenom ii x6, ati hd 5770 (not the best but i still ran tf2 amazingly well not too long ago), 4gb ram. idk what else you'll want to know about my specs.

i'm using dxlevel 8 and chris' max frames config. i've defragged everything in my steamapps folder. i've verified the cache as well, numerous times.

i'm not sure what else i can do, let alone if there's a better fps cfg somewhere out there.

i know it doesn't make sense but i know some people get better performance on dx9 than dx8

His ragdoll settings don't work for me. Whenever I try turning ragdolls off with his config, half the time the ragdolls will just freeze in the air in a death position until they disappear. It's really distracting.

the rag dolls settings work fine for me. i really wish i could stop playing this game at 30 fps more times than not, my computer is good enough to run this game @ max settings perfectly fine.

i heard there were rare occurrences were running @ max settings could result in better performance than lowest settings. is this true?

kirbyi heard there were rare occurrences were running @ max settings could result in better performance than lowest settings. is this true?

If your GPU is really really good you can get better performance with higher settings since the Source engine will actually use your GPU a little bit.

Next time you're playing, run hwmonitor in the background and let me know how hot your CPU gets.

Buddy of mine had an issue where his CPU would downclock the second it got over 55 degrees. If this is your issue I can ask him how he fixed it.

well me and john came to the conclusion that it's probably just tf2 acting up on me because no other game gives me a problem. though we're not leaving out the possibility of my fan and/or cpu needing to be reseated, but i think that's a last resort if anything.

so if there are anymore ideas, please send them my way.

edit: playing @ max settings seems to make it less obvious but i still notice it every now and again

I want to know how he fixed it :3 my CPU usually heats up to 60-65° while playing..

Reinstalling windows usually helps if you haven't in a long while. Defragging your entire computer helps as well, but to get a good defrag, you usually should go through all your files and delete extra crap that's just lying around not doing anything, to which point i usually fall back on reinstalling windows from scratch as being faster.

I play on a 75hz monitor, why would I want to play with 61 FPS?

I have no way of saving the important things that I need, so reinstalling Windows is probably not an option at the moment.

if you cap @ 61 you'll get 60 fps, still a bad idea but felt like i should tell you,

run prifinnity and set affinity of hl2.exe to the last 4 cores of your cpu and set priority to high ( you can add it to favourites and auto-set).

This isn't true. More GPU resources will be used but that doesn't offload CPU use or make it any more efficient.

My phenom II x6 becomes VERY testy if it goes over 60 degrees C - and the stock heat sink is a fucking nightmare dust collector (I have to blow mine out every 3 weeks or notice performance decreases).

Mine's chillin at 26 C right now and Tf2 is running fine lol.

You can also try just fresh installing tf2 - that fixed a previous problem with FPS that I had. I'd wait until steam pipe for that, that way on the 30th just delete all your shit and start fresh.

Got the same specs and tf2 dropped for me aswell. From 120-100 on midfights to 50/60 and even 30~ish in pubs. I tried everything, dx8, dx9, set my windows layout for best performance etc. Also steampipe didnt improve anything for me

kirbymy specs are amd phenom ii x6, ati hd 5770 (not the best but i still ran tf2 amazingly well not too long ago), 4gb ram. idk what else you'll want to know about my specs.

Are you me? I'm running the exact same specs. Try the old airduster+ vacuum combo. As Marx said, the heatsink is quite a bitch.
