Props and people keep disappearing; had to make a bind to record and stop a demo. Helped a bit, however I keep crashing a few minutes after I do this.

It's happening to me and i'm on win 7.

I tried checking my autoexec by switching with someone who hasn't crashed, didn't work.

I dx8, dx90, 95, etc, tried fullscreen, windowed, changing my launch options, adding and removing -nod3d9ex from launch options, still fucked me up

any ideas?

specs : GTX 460, i5 sandy bridge, 4GB of corsair

I was CTDing too actually -- does it happen if you don't fix it with that? I haven't had the patience to just leave it and see...

G.SKILL RAM for me.

I doubt it's hardware; probably Valve rotated some new interns in to handle TF2 for the next few months and they fucked something up.

It's more than likely something in your various FPS configs. I really don't think posting hardware specs is going to help us figure this out (since everyone experiencing this problem are on completely different builds - as you can see above).

2nd response from Valve:

Thanks, this is super helpful. It seems likely that this is related to
the FPS config, which also explains why it's not more widespread. We
will investigate.

(I sent them Comanglia's cfg)

I really hope everyone posting about this issue is also emailing Valve. It will help us get to a resolution much quicker.

Only other option is some graphic command wizard figures out what the new update messed up and shares the info here.

Only stuff from the FPS configs I'm using is hiding the ragdolls --

cl_ragdoll_fade_time 0
cl_ragdoll_forcefade 1
cl_ragdoll_physics_enable 0
g_ragdoll_fadespeed 0
g_ragdoll_lvfadespeed 0
ragdoll_sleepaftertime 0

Don't think I've had an issue with props though unless the maps I was on (Coal and Sunshine) happen to use props that are immune. I do get disappearing players though, so if it is, in fact, FPS-config-related, then the disappearing players would be related to one of those. Will maybe test each individually if it's not fixed by tomorrow.

I suppose it's possible that if anyone dies, every model is hidden? Anyone know if the disappearance happens upon someone dying? It definitely doesn't happen consistently if that's the case though -- but the last ragdoll bug that happened was only when people died to certain things (gibbing explosives I think?).

testing it again with gibs and ragdolls enabled with stock low settings and so far no problems aside from the 20-50 less fps i get without a config. not crossing my fingers thought since it did mess up again earlier under the same conditions.

edit: YEP STILL BORKED WITH STOCK SETTINGS

Personally I've only encountered this on servers with sourcemod/tftrue installed but if what #56 is saying is true and this happens on valve pubs too any real server side issues should be out of the question.

Does everyone that has this issue by any chance have the "surfaceprops.txt" file (the one that removes excess particles on surfaces shot by hitscan) in their custom hud scripts folder?

Also if you have the nosoundscapes vpk file, the nohats mod or any other vpk mod thing in your custom folder this could be relevant. If someone has none of these things in their custom folder and still has issues please post so here because it eliminates a whole lot of potential causes to the issue.

Also, has anybody figured out what the "CUtlLinkedList overflow! (exhausted index range)" post spammed in console means? It seems to be spammed before / as the problem occurs.

has anyone had these disappears/crashes without using a fps-config?
has anyone figured out (or does anyone have an idea of) when/why the disappears happen?

the few times it's happened to me, i couldn't really tell what set the disappear/crash off (too many players on the server).
on busy servers, it's going to be hard to track what happened just before things started to disappear.

i've had it happen on a valve server as well, so i suppose it's got noting to do with any server plugin.
i have surfaceprops.txt installed.
i have nosoundscapes vpk installed.

does anyone else have either of these mods installed? or maybe different mods?

and i'm willing to play around with cvars from fps-configs, but i'll need to know if everyone having these disappears is actually using one.

Just tried removing everything custom but my actual config.

No custom hud, no surfaceprops.txt, no vpks, nothing workshop-ish.

Just pure tf2 in dx8 with a custom cfg.

Issue remains and frequently returns.

If it's not the cfg the game is just straight up shitting itself.

EDIT: Posting my launch options for the fuck of it.
Highly unlikely but worth a shot.

-console -freq 144 -threads 4 -novid -nojoy -noforcemparms -noforcemaccel -noforcemspd -w 1920 -h 1080

EDIT2: Compared my launch options to vani who also has this issue.
Unless any of these options cause the issue

-console -w 1920 -h 1080 -full -novid

, we can probably assume it's either cfg related or just a straight up poorly done update.

I'd like to chime in on this update as well. When the Steam Broadcasting feature was introduced in beta, being in the Steam Beta *at all* would cause my TF2 to become incredibly unstable. I was lucky to get past the initial launch without freezing.
Reinstalling TF2, verifying files, restarting my PC, none fixed it. Opting out fixed all my issues.
When broadcasting was brought to the release client, the issues came with it. I found a strange fix in running the game in windowed borderless(Ran in fullscreen before). Now, for some reason, with this update, I'm having almost the exact same issue. I launch the game, either normally or joining through a friend, and the game will go non-responsive within 5 seconds of launch.

I'm going to re-install Steam to see if it fixes it, but if anyone has any advice, I'd be glad to hear it.

I don't use any fps configs, I have verified files again, I use CBHud, and my launch option are as follows:
-novid -sw -noborder

EDIT: Reinstalled both Steam and TF2 again, completely vanilla, no custom stuff. Still crashes 5 seconds after launch.
EDIT EDIT: Never mind, seems to be an issue with my PC running literally any Source engine games. Which is weird because my TF2 was working just last night. Oh well.

issue was happening to me constantly during dm / mge, and didn't happen at all during scrims, but it was affecting a teammate + someone else on the other team, sometimes at the same time

highly doubt it's related to any setting or config from that alone, considering I changed no settings

After "extensive mge testing" I have come to the conclusion of that it happens pretty much only when using hitscan weapons (take what I say here with a grain of salt here, I can't fully confirm this).

I.E soldier shotgun, scout class, etc. makes you crash.
When playing demo I experienced no issues at all, however as soon as I switched to scout or shotgun soldier the problem occurred after just a few lives.

Valve what have you done?

i'm thinking that i actually might not have crashed once, as demoman..

if you can be bothered, how about removing/renaming your autoexec.cfg, and also removing/renaming your config.cfg?
because if you then would not get any disappears/crashes, then i guess i could go cvar-hunting

because explosions tend to gib enemies, rather than giving them a ragdoll. maybe that's why hitscan causes it, and explosions don't.
i am trying to test it myself but, since i'm rarely crashing, it's hard for me to check whether it's fixed or not :/

i had removed all of those 6 commands from my autoexec.cfg, then deleted my config.cfg, then launched tf2.
i double-checked if the settings were indeed reset to default - which they had been.
but, again, after ~1 minute of playing (after killing someone with scattergun), everything disappeared again.

i'm starting to think that it has nothing to do with any custom mods or configs any of us have.
MessyRecipe's config only has some ragdoll commands, but none of those commands are the issue.
Twisted had deleted all of his mods, except for his cfg, and still the problems were there.
am i overlooking a possibility here?

i'm convinced that the cause of the disappearances and crashes is indeed killing someone with a hitscan weapon.
i can't really figure out why it doesn't happen every time, though.

Has anyone tried putting -autoconfig in their launch options and seeing what happens? I am personally not getting this issue, so I can't test it myself.

Be sure to back up your cfgs and custom stuff beforehand, though!
