I have been thinking about this for a while. How can we as regular competitive players, whether it be ESEA, UGC, anyone involved in competitive tf2 help grow the community? Most people who play competitive tf2 have a passion for the game and would like to see it grow, but how can we as a community help this happen? I mean sure, you can put playcomp.tf in your name or something like that, but is there actually anything we can do to actively grow this special yet small community?
Valve needs to sponsor a major for TF2 and that will be the hook, line and sinker, matchmaking is simply the gateway but this answer has been throughput a million times
make a better matchmaking and advertise the crap out of it
instead of everyone just telling me "this thread has been made a million times" can you link me the actual thread please.

Tell your friends who play tf2 about the scene and show them the kind of things that are a part of competitive tf2 mge with them, teach them about the 6s format, do some competitive matchmaking, watch a match or 2 with them. Just let them know we exist and that competitive is fun (:
Also just support the scene by helping to fund events that give competitive tf2 good exposure. Donate to fundraisers for lan tournaments like i58 so that it can be the best event possible.

On the subject of faceit..
They allow people to host tournaments. I'm assuming this means they provide all the servers with configs (maybe even part of the prizepool?) Never used faceit for cs:go and tf2 faceit is still in the first stages so not sure how exactly it all works.
Using faceit as a way to host cups for newer players might be a thing soon

Only if valve advertised the biggest tf2 LAN of the year and probably the most important annual event
Hentai hud with competitive links in it. Been sayin it for years
here is one of the many threads http://www.teamfortress.tv/33485/how-can-we-bring-more-people-into-tf2

Big prize pools won't bring people in. General interest in the game will.
Nobody's interested in HotS and Blizzard's pumping $100k tournaments for it,
yet nobody's still watching it.
You'd need to create interest before throwing money at a game.
Valve has a crap ton of money, a $10k or $100k tournament wouldn't hurt them at all you say? Nobody's dumb enough to randomly throw money around like that, especially not Valve.

valve makes $2 million a day in revenues off this game last I heard. if they put even a $5,000 prize pool up for a tourney it would be ground-shaking for us little people.
5000 is not even close to enough valve support to make an impact
ESEA invite already has like 14k in prizes a season

But even $5000 of valve money is enough to get mentioned on Kokatu or whatever bullshit gamer media site people use. It's about authenticity, not just the number after the dollar sign.

no way do they make 30x the peak daily player count in dollars daily off this game.
that said even a $10k online tourney would be big for the game and would be relatively easy (lans come with lots of costs/time/liability). not sure how much of a profit tf2 makes nowadays but they've made bank over 9 years.

billion times said - advertisement. This can be applied to both tf2 comp and TF2 in general. Roll mm cinematic on Twitch, make and pay off some "ESEA TF2 OPEN REGISTER NOW" for CS tourneys or these TF community pubs living on adverts, anything will go.
honestly valve should help sponsor I58, and advertise, or maybe the next i-series lan. It would be awesome, and a positive thing.
It was reported that Valve brought in annual revenues of around $140 million on TF2 just a few years ago. While there's no way to know for sure, it's probable that they're still bringing in something to the tune of $100 million, so it's definitely not a question of affording it.
That being said, Valve is more data-driven and reactive - actual financial support can happen if they see it as a worthy investment. Even though they made hundreds of millions on CS:GO in 2015 (estimated), it wasn't until this year that they increased major prize pools from $250k to $1m when you saw other prize pots rapidly growing. In that sense, we have to help make/hope that matchmaking is a success and actually shows that many people are interested in competitive so that they can take the next step as far as support goes.

If valve waits to see success before investing we doomed
To be a bit more clear. The majority of people still don't know what 6s is and if valve doesn't do something to help soon it will never be more than what it is now.

esea is legit the only current league that costs money to enter. Asiafortress, Ozfortress and etf2l are all free so it kinda sucks for you guys that you actually have to pay to play, especially with a shitty client.
If it was free I reckon 6s in general would be seeing more players, but I don't think that can happen

I don't think LANs are the way to generate interest for the general public in TF2 competitive because most people don't really care for LANs at all. Only those who already have a genuine interest in competitive play do and they will most likely already know all about 6s.
You need online advertisements so even the most casual user at least knows that there is comp and what it looks like. That way you draw in new people. LANs only keep in those already invested in the game, which is obviously also needed.

Wrong.
LANs are always more popular than league games. DHS was a huge success considering past tournaments outside of insomnia weren't as popular. Also, theres enough advertisement and I fully expect i58 to get around 10k average.
Just look at OW, on average the league games get like 2k viewers more than TF2 league matches.
What is really missing is the prize pools. Big e-sports organizations bring in more viewers/players and create a look of "professionalism", which also creates more interest.
Someone (on tftv?) suggested that valve should use a small portion of the TF2 earnings to support tournaments. I think b4nny should talk with them about this, considering they don't listen to his weapon balancing ideas anyway.

If you want people to just watch: LANs/majors are the thing to go for. But you only reach those already invested.
If you want people to participate: you need something else to draw in those not currently interested in comp.

list of things that we, the community, can do to get more players interested in comp
- probably the easiest thing we could do by ourselfs is just reccomending pub players to try comp with tf2center or tf2stadium
- we could also demand more attention from valve, although yeah we're getting what we wanted recently (buffs / nerfs, the stream list, competitive matchmaking and general good stuff related to comp), we could need some help outside the game, like helping with community projects or people related with the comp scene
- i think youtubers could easily grow our community, the last somewhat big youtubers that talked about / played / mentioned comp tf2 in videos were star (playing esea open, talking about comp tf2, and playing comp in videos) and muselk (talking about comp tf2 in a few videos), and im guessing we got quite a few people interested in comp just because of those vids
- also we can try making a new "letter" to valve with new stuff that we need to keep comp tf2 alive, idk how much effort and time took to make the original card sent to valve so idk if people would like to make another one
list of things that valve can do to increase the fanbase of comp tf2
-
Smesieverytime you rank up in mm, you'll get a random hat.
this will attract a lot of people to mm but probably not to actual leagues like ESEA / ETF2L / OZF / Etc.
that'll attract a lot of people into mm / comp.
- another thing i thought about valve making major-like events through the years like the dota majors, but of course not as big.
- buying items related to the comp scene, like stickers and team-related skins, would be cool for the people that play comp and i'll attract quite a few people into comp.
- i remember that dota has a thing for the international in which you buy like a bundle of items related to pro teams and shit, and the money collected from that bundle goes directly to prizepool of the international, i'll be cool if valve could do something like that for the insomnia lans or all lans / tourneys
- also something like this will really help the viewership of matchesi'm not talking about the stream list of course because we already have that, buy i'm talking about the upcomming matches list
like right now comp tf2 is in a questionable state because a lot of players / community members are joining the overwatch hype bandwagon and by itself our community is pretty small, and if we keep losing players and people in general i think comp tf2 might just die
i made this post all in one stroke so my proposals might be too much or too dumb
