This is an update on tiers and the picking process:

The Tiers will be as such: S-tier: Invite Partner, A-tier: Low Invite, B-tier: High Advanced, C-tier: Mid/Low Advanced.

Using S19 as an example, out of the 9 advanced teams - 54 players, not including subs- that participated, only the top 4 teams -24 players- are B-tier with the rest being C-tier. The public vote will aim to narrow down the player count to 8 B-tier players and 16 C-tier and the only people who are eligible to vote will be Main- invite, with 2 votes to spend for each tier (participants cant vote for themselves).

The overall pool of players will measure out to 36 like previously stated and there will be 5 rounds of picking, which will be done as shown below. The picking order that will be used will be the the one mentioned in the original post.

Round 0: Captains will roll the dice to determine the picking order.
Round 1: Captains will pick between 6 Invite partners, each on their main class
Round 2-5: Captains will pick between 1 A-tier, 2 B-tier, and 3 C-tier players.
Round 6: Captains will pick 2 players from the top 4 Main to shadow their coaching.

rgl pugs is where pretty much everyone plays pugs these days, open pugs happen as frequently as possible because its rng picking but captain pugs mostly happen on the weekends because the invite players add up

I’d say using “glorified open pugs” as a way to describe this tournament is completely false. Sure there are aspects that are similar with open pugs like the skill range of the players; however this is a tournament, where the players will be trying their best to come out to the top in order to prove themselves and (hopefully) win the prize. You can think of it like an AAU tournament where young players get coached and compete for their name to be recognized and open up opportunities.

I think doing this for only Invite and high Advanced would be like putting a bandaid over a cut artery. It might temporarily fix our current problem of not having enough invite teams but the scale would be too small to help accelerate the growth of this gamemode. The problem with the community’s growth is a foundational one, and the lower we go to fix that foundation the more it will help us on the long run. Though it is true that the skill gap might be too big for main players to adapt to, some people have brought up the idea that they could be used as benchwarmers, which I think is also a good idea because they can still improve by being part of their team but they won’t be guaranteed any playing time. You could think of them as highschool students taking a tour of a college.

That could also work, I was thinking that every captain should be able to get a first pick from a category but that would end up making the person who starts off with the 5th pick will only be able to get the F-tier first pick. And my problem with the snake method is that the third and fourth picks might get the mid picks every time and they might just be mid ?

Well that's the selling point of the tournament as well as the purpose of it. The captains try to pick the best team they can and try to improve in order to beat each other. It'll be a great test of leadership for the captains by getting them out of their comfort zone and a great opportunity for the participants to improve while also providing exciting matches for viewers.

I also agree that 36 participants are too few but if there are 6 captains with 6 players teams then the max amount of players allowed to play would be 30 if we exclude the captains. I was thinking that the rgl players themselves could vote for who they want to participate ( kinda like an nba-allstar vote) and narrow down the pool by sorting the players into categories. So for example there would be an A-tier category that would include the invite partners, B-tier category for low invite players, C- tier category for high advanced, D-tier for mid advanced, E-tier for low advanced,
and F-tier for high main, with the players being placed in each category depending on their most recent placement.

4-Day cup (Thurs - Sun), 6 Invite captains that will dice roll for picking order with the last pick getting 2 picks, the picking order will shift by one after each round of picking (1st -> 6th, 2nd ->1st, 3rd->2nd, etc.) until drafting period is over. Captains will be picking their invite partners in the first round with each available partner only being able to play their respected class (6 classes, 6 partners). Once the partners have been picked, captains will be picking from a pool of 36 players ranging from Main Playoffs to 1st Place Advanced. There will be an RGL ruleset in place along with the bracket being the same as RGL Playoffs with 6 teams in play, each game will be single elimination with the only exception being Grand Finals which will be a BO3. Teams that get knocked down in the loser’s bracket will have to play an additional day 1 game as a punishment and as a way to keep the tournament’s pace stable.

The purpose of this cup will be to give better opportunities for players to improve faster by being mentored by the captains and their partners as well as putting on a show for viewers and have newer players something to look forward to participating in the future.

why shouldnt people have high standards, why should people be allowed to throw in pugs and ruin the whole experience, why should anyone let u on their team if ur goal is not to win or get significantly better, why should anyone want to compete with u if ure any of the above even if the money isnt that much. I think the “eSports mentality” is a good thing just like everything else that makes you a better you is a good thing. Not wanting to win and get better just means that ure happy with a worse version of yourself and that is not acceptable. If ure a new player u get a pass but everyone else with seasons of experience should take a good look at themselves and tighten up.

I think that if u sign up to play anything competitive ull be expected to try ur best to win by your peers, especially if ure on a team, which the whole purpose of being in one is to compete. Now u can have ur opinion that “its not that serious” but if ure carrying that with u in a competitive setting where others are trying to improve then ure doing a huge disservice to the other 5 people in ur team by wasting their time which is what is actually evil. if u dont wanna compete then go play casual, no one will make u better or yell at u there.

I agree, some sort of experience should be needed for them to add up, either 1 season minimum or have them cross an elo threshold. The problem of unbalanced 5-0 is also extremely highlighted if ure someone with high elo because the site tries to balance out the teams and comes up with one team having a 2000 elo player and always landing the new player and the whole other team ends up having 1600 and over which basically makes the games a 6 v 5 because no matter how high ur elo is u cant teach someone how to play in 25 mins. This is really such a fatal flaw because it punishes people for having put in the time required to reach high elo, and i think when u reach 1800 and above the games become incredibly punishing because the site expects u to get 40 kills and 400 dpm each game no matter the circumstances so it pairs u up with players that have 1100 elo and 3 games played on the site. We should be actively looking for a solution because trying to do your best in games and reaching high elo is like shooting your future self in the foot so it makes people stop trying and it lowers the quality of the pugs.
