#10 Learning web design in TF2 General Discussion
Cro0Ked_on what grounds? php is valuable knowledge if you're going to do anything

It's good to know PHP in the sense that the more languages you know, the better. However, it is an absolutely horrible language and I would not suggest its use to anybody unless there is a particular reason to use it. I would suggest Ruby or Python for web development.

#5 Learning web design in TF2 General Discussion
HazSwagI am reasonably proficient with python, and also the basics of java. Do i keep building on one of those or just learn something anew?

No, you generally don't use programming languages for web design. Programming languages such as Python can be used to develop web applications, but the design part is simply markup languages, namely HTML and CSS. The exception here is JavaScript, which you could use to make your web site a bit more interactive and dynamic.

As far as resources go, check out the links vtable and reilly posted; those should keep you covered. Other than that, you can always view the source of other websites to see how things are done.

Cro0Ked_a php book too which you'll want

I disagree.

#23 Remove PYYYOUR from streamer list. in Site Discussion
rr-You know you could just not click his stream and there wouldn't be any problems right? I don't know why people still care about this stuff.

That's equivalent to saying a broken link shouldn't be fixed because you can simply not click it.

Yes, it's certainly not a big issue, but it does look a bit unprofessional and it's an easy fix.

SBARROHOTTOPICI'm super confused about this whole thing -- what does this mean for HUDs?

I read the entire article, and from what I understand, not much.

You can package all the HUD files into a single VPK and drop that into the custom directory, which could make HUD installation simpler. However, this would probably make customisation a bit more annoying as the user would have to extract the contents to make any changes.

That said, it will still be possible to keep the HUD files unpackaged, stored in a subdirectory in the custom directory. Valve claims this method will result in slightly slower load times, but I'm fairly certain the difference will be negligible, unless you go overboard with the number of such directories.

To summarise what I just said, HUD installation will be simpler if you do not intend to make any changes, and it won't be any more difficult than now if you do.

[note] As far as my HUD is concerned, I intend to continue shipping the HUD in the same format as now, through Git and ZIP files. If there exists a command-line tool to create VPKs, I will generate nightly packages; otherwise, I won't.

#4 "Strange" Question in TF2 General Discussion

I believe it gives you a list of available options when you click restore on an item.

#12 Want a linux penguin without installing linux? in Off Topic
hanbrologod I hate having a mac. anyone have any idea what I can do to make this work with OSX?

While the source code is provided, it seems to rely on shared libraries for Windows. As such, the only way you'll get this to work under Mac is through virtualisation or some sort of compatibility layer.

You can install Windows in VirtualBox or another such app to run this, but you might as well install Linux in it instead.

TwitchTVJohnSource code = it's clean.

That's not quite the case if you're running a precompiled binary.

While unlikely, it's entirely possible he injected malicious bits into the code prior to compilation, and shipped the resultant binary alongside the clean source code.

WithADanceNumberseems shady, I wouldn't bother with it.

He says source code is provided, so it's probably not a scam. That said, if you want to run this, I would suggest reading the source code and compiling it yourself; better safe than sorry.

Or do what Devon said and give Linux a try. It's honestly a great operating system and you might like it.

#38 Fully charged #21 -- ask infinite/Fornaught stuff: in TF2 General Discussion

Can we please keep these questions/comments constructive? I understand some of you really dislike these people, and I don't blame you for doing so, but all you're doing is making it harder for cbear and Salamancer to sort through these comments to find legitimate questions.

Thank you.

simfooHud is looking great under Linux too - I haven't found any issues yet.

Yup, Linux is actually my top priority.

It's only slightly broken under OS X, it seems.

#2 Linux Ubuntu Compatible Wireless USB -N Adapter in Hardware

The Linux kernel is nice and has many drivers built in. Here is a very cheap adapter that has great reviews, some of which mention plug-and-play use on Linux. I've never used it, but I have a router from them and it's a solid product.

#429 my new hud. in Customization

First actual update in a while!

I used to have a CTF panel I liked, but I scrapped it because it looked like shit in MvM. I then figured out how to fix this, but I had no motivation to re-implement the old design. Fortunately, rays inspired me to get off my ass and do it, so you can thank him.

[edit] Also, I made a Steam group, which I'll use to send out announcements about non-minor updates, unless I get lazy (which is likely): http://steamcommunity.com/groups/tf2hud

[edit2] Also added alternate target IDs containing a health cross.

#35 Team Fortress 2 Welcomes Linux in TF2 General Discussion
RojoHow do you set up your mouse settings, (mouse acceleration and dpi) on linux?

That question is impossible to answer with the amount of information you've provided.

However, Valve added raw mouse input for Linux in one of the more recent TF2 updates, so you can try that out. Command is m_rawinput I believe.

VirulenceompYes. Steam Box is going to be running Linux, so it makes sense for them to release Steam and various games for the operating system.Oh, it's going to run Linux? Point taken.

I do not think it's been announced in an official capacity, but that's what Valve has suggested, and all of the recent Linux development certainly backs it up. (Just clarifying in case Valve changes their mind; I don't want to mislead anybody.)
