Entire computer freeze + black screen during TF2

I know tftv isnt a troubleshooting forum but I'm too lazy to make an account somewhere else and I think I might as well start on a TF2 forum. Also, I've been googling but I can't seem to find anyone else with this issue.

So this happens while playing TF2. Randomly, the entire screen will go black. The audio stops and does NOT loop. ALL computer audio (spotify/mumble/discord) ceases. I cannot alt-tab from the blackness or force quit or something, so it's likely not a problem with the TF2 window. I have to use the power switch on the back of the PSU to turn off/restart.
The first time it happened was yesterday. I updated drivers, played for the rest of the night at the same intensity in terms of computer load with no issues. My first thought was maybe it could be overheating but I've never had this issue before despite playing at the same temps for years. So I figure maybe it was a fluke and play more today, all fine and well until it happened again. I've not experienced this issue in other games, even though some put my computer under even more stress than TF2 does.

Any ideas?

verify game cache maybe? try moving everything in your tf/custom folder, relaunch and see what happens
mods commonly break the game when out of date
could be an issue with your gpu

remove all stuff from your custom folder
verify integrity of game files
launch your game with -autoconfig -default
start adding custom stuff back one by one and determine which is causing the issue

remove ur graphical drivers using ddu and install them back
do memtest
do a fresh os install

Thank you gamers, very cool! I will try all of these and then play a lot of TF2 to see if anything changes.
