click this link and scroll down to 'Result Displayed Rating' of your most recent casual match to see your mmr. mine is 1589. post yours below for comparison :)

edit: just saw there was already a thread on this but it seemed no one really knew what all the numbers meant

id guess that casual is pretty lax on team balance since theres a focus on keeping matches full with generally low pings. the majority of your opponents are most likely average players (starting glicko rating is 1500) so the formulas likely assuming that almost every match you play is in your favor.

like if youre in a spot where the game just assumes that you have like an 80% chance to win all your casual matches, then thats 4 wins per 1 loss, and if youre actually meeting that expectation then your skill rating is probably pretty accurate (and itll reflect that by penalizing your 4x as much for losses or whatever, its more complicated than that but thats the gist of it)

glickos not really meant to be easy to climb. its really good at being an accurate skill rating, but since a players actual skill tends to take weeks to see serious improvement a lot of games try to use flashier MMR systems cuz it feels nicer. but like in this case its a (mostly) hidden value so its not really a big deal.

I haven't played casual in like six months and can't seem to know for sure if I'm even looking at the right thing, but every instance of "Result Displayed Rating" is really high for me. Clicked on your link and all that jazz too:

EDIT: Maybe it's because I haven't played in so long...they might've changed the rating system and anyone who hasn't opened up TF2 since then looks off.

Yeah I think you are right. I haven't played casual in a long time and mine is a similar number to yours.

It does seem really hard to change. Looking back and forth through the 40 results that show on mine, it doesn't vary more than +- 10.

Yes.

It does seem really hard to change. Looking back and forth through the 40 results that show on mine, it doesn't vary more than +- 10.

Potential reasons for this in Glicko:

* You have a very high confidence rating (very low Rating Deviation) in the skill formula so the game thinks you're where you belong.

* Your opponents have a low confidence rating (very high Rating Deviation) in the skill formula, so the game considers the game relatively low usefulness to consider for how good you are since it has no accurate idea how good your opponents are.

* If you're in a party your adjustments will be smaller unless you are facing equally skilled/better parties as your team will consistently be favored to win.

i mean it seems wrong that that would still be considered performing below my skill level

in a game with such wide skill differences and such large team sizes that depend on the skill, composition, and cohesion of a team to win, win/loss should probably be weighted less than individual performance when considering skill indexing.

but you know, valve, so

idk. problem is that when that counts, certain playstyles just become inherantly better for laddering. its a pretty common issue in overwatch honestly.

like take soldier for example. its generally good to have both a pocket and a roamer rather than two of either. but pockets stats are usually much more impressive on paper. and while its not so much a big deal for casual, they use the same thing for comp. and itd suck if youre stuck with teammates that avoid the right play just because they think itll hurt the mmr they would get.

i think one of the biggest issues is that theyre recalculating a rating after every single game. glicko's kinda meant to have like 10-20 games in a period every time a new ranking gets calculated. with how valves currently doing it, the change is very often a small variation that gets rounded to 0 or -1, which really leaves you up to the mercy of the matchmaking system to give you a game where positive rating change is even possible.

yeah, except nobody cares about their mmr in casual, it's only used to balance teams to (in theory) make them more fun for everyone

when you have a publord scunt dropping ~50 frags and losing, and therefore losing mmr because the system weighs win/loss more heavily than individual performance, it just makes future matches for that player more unbalanced because the system is weighing team performance more than individual when considering individual skill level. and this is compounded by the fact that it's casual and most players probably aren't playing for the win anyway, they're playing to have fun, whether that's by going friendly heavy, or trolldier, or sniper, or spy, or whatever. in that kind of environment where win/loss doesn't matter to the players, why should it matter to the matchmaking system?

but to reiterate: valve doesn't care, and we probably shouldn't either, because it's fucking casual. i'd rather they spent as little effort on it as possible so that they can work on the real problems the game has: the ambassador being too good and pyro not having enough mobility
