I wanna replace at least both the case and mobo because I'm sick of all that stuff not working, one of the case fans is gone as well. I looked to see if I had room for a pci-e sound card and I didn't so that settles it.

Also I'm seeing those benchmarks but I'm getting 150 FPS on minimum settings 80% resolution scale and the tests all seem to be on high or better settings, so I was thinking it was just the computer not being treated well and slowing down or something?

Looking to build my first gaming PC. Trying to get something relatively cheap and reliable, also looking to have it last for at least 3-5 years without having to buy new parts (not sure how doable that is for low cost, but I'm trying anyway)

This is what I have so far: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/b3TFvV

Trying to keep this at about 1k or less in cost, but i can go to 1200ish.

Ty in advance for the help Setsul

Video production as in rendering?
There's a lot of new CPUs being released with lots of cores, wait until after that before deciding on a partlist. Can't predict what the prices in September will be.

Editing for the most part but yes, buttloads of rendering :3
I'll wait then thanks :)

I'm backk~ Life happened and now I'm looking to build this mid October. Again, I've used macs all my life so literally anything should be an upgrade :3

Budget: ~3.5k SGD (About 2.6k USD)
Usage: Gaming & Video Production
Dual Monitors: 2x 24" 144hz (27" is a no-no due to space constraints)

Thanks Setsul!

Should be doable.

New CPUs on 5th of October. Thank god someone leaked the slides so Intel finally admitted when they'll release them instead of the stupid announcement game, announcing an event where they will announce something which turns out to be an announcement that they will release CPUs but which models exactly and when will be announced later.
Wait for that. Prices are not confirmed yet and obviously might be a bit different right after launch. Also no mobos yet so definitely not possible to make a partlist right now.

Some notes though: The 212 Evo is a great cooler for 20-25$ because it's a decent cooler on sale for 20-25$, not because it's a great cooler. Even for 30$ you can already get better coolers, considering the rest of the build skimping on the cooler doesn't make sense.

Thermal paste is included and Arctic Silver 5 is neither better than the included one, nor will a 25$ cooler + 5$ thermal paste ever beat a 30$ cooler.

K CPU -> overclockable, but only Z mobos allow overclocking. Either both K and Z so you can overclock (and then actually do it or you've just wasted money) or neither.
Yes, there are some exceptions since in the recent past the i7-x700K would be ~10% higher clocked than the non-K version, but for the 7600(K) the difference is 2.5%. Considering the non-K comes with a cooler whereas you have to buy one for the K you'd be looking at 50$ for 2.5% better performance in the absolute best case.

Always go for Dual Channel RAM (2 sticks or multiples of 2). Twice the bandwidth. No, most of the time you will probably not be bound by bandwidth, so most programs will run barely faster and only some actually get almost twice the speed, but it costs literally the same, so there's no reason to go for single channel.

Sandisk SSD Plus is a budget SSD and not that fast. Right now it's not even cheap so it doesn't make sense. You can easily afford the 20-30$ more for a much faster 250GB SSD.

Seagate Barracuda and Toshiba P300 are both faster and cheaper than a WD Blue.

750W PSU for a <350W build doesn't make sense.

I don't know the prices in Singapore but 3.5k SGD probably won't get you the same that 2.6k USD would get you in the US. Any price comparision sites I could use or links to the shops you'll buy from?

Any specifics for the monitors? Both 144 Hz or lower refresh rate IPS (->better colours etc.) for the video production?
G-Sync/FreeSync or ULMB/Lightboost or whatever other features you might want?

Need storage? How much? Just one SSD for the OS and programs or a larger one (or two seperate ones) so you can also use it for rendering?

How much RAM?

Of course I could just guess but figuring out how to figure out what you actually want/need will help you when you want to upgrade and you'll get a better build.

Fair point, whoops. Locally there's really only 2 ways to get parts, from the shady local tech mall or online.
Here's the price list from one of the more reputable shops of said mall:
http://www.fuwell.com.sg/uploads/misc/Fuwell230917.pdf
And a website of another better known shop in the same mall:
http://best-bargain-computers.com

Looking mainly at the BenQ XL2411/2430 but I'm open to anything you'd recommend :)

Need storage? How much? Just one SSD for the OS and programs or a larger one (or two seperate ones) so you can also use it for rendering?

Definitely, maybe 500GB-1TB? I think I'll go for the single larger one.

How much RAM?

Maybe 16GB? Purely from reading online forums 8 seems to be too little.

Of course I could just guess but figuring out how to figure out what you actually want/need will help you when you want to upgrade and you'll get a better build.

Thanks for taking the time out of your day for this :)

Ok, I can definitely use to get an idea of the prices. Is that also where you'll be buying the parts or any other shops? If those are the exact prices then I can get closer to the max budget, if they are just similar I'll have to leave some wiggle room to be sure. Especially shops that got AMD RyZen/Threadripper in stock would be nice because those will definitely be more interesting for rendering.

To recommend a monitor I need to know which features you want first.

Ok, 500-1000GB then for the SSD. What about the HDD? I'd imagine you want one for finished projects. 3-4TB? Smaller/larger?

16GB is basically the starting point, is that enough or do you think you'll need 32GB? You can just go with 16GB and upgrade later if you need to.

I'll definitely take a good look around the mall for better deals but you can use those links as a rough gauge. Prices from store to store are generally around the same and mostly negotiable, as long as I can prove that they are available elsewhere for cheaper.

On the topic of CPUs, would you recommend AMD Ryzen/Threadripper or Intel's incoming Coffee Lake? From my amateur POV I'm leaning towards the Threadripper purely because of the number of cores and threads it has.

SetsulTo recommend a monitor I need to know which features you want first.

Dual 24", both 120hz-144hz, better colours would be ideal. I'm fine with either G-Sync or FreeSync (This is probably a really shit answer to your question but I honestly don't know much about monitors hahaha) With my budget I'm assuming FreeSync would be more obtainable?

32GB would be great if the budget allows :)

I've been noticing high temps on my motherboard in Speccy. ~65c under load and ~50c at idle. My cpu and gpu hit about 60-65c at load and idle at high 30s/low 40s. This hasn't caused any problems, but I just wanted to see if this could be a problem in the future.

My build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/x2f3Ps

I have another 140mm fan running in exhaust at the rear of the case with the 200mm fan at the front of the case as an intake. Fans on my radiator are in push venting out the top. If there's a more optimal way to arrange these that would be helpful to know as well.

Ok, I'll see what I can do tomorrow. Just a rough draft, final partlist in the week that you actually buy everything.

Exactly, for rendering more cores are better, so if the budget allows it then Threadripper, otherwise a RyZen 8 core because it's cheaper than a Kaby Lake 4 core or Coffee Lake 6 core.

No, this is either or. Either 144 Hz or better colours, possibly two different monitors one with each, but you can't really afford both on the same monitor. G-Sync/FreeSync do the same so this is about vendor lock (G-Sync = nVidia only and nVidia refuses to support FreeSync), but you don't need either, I asked whether or not you want it. Should probably read up on what they do. Same with ULMB/Lightboost.

Good.

We'll see how it works out with the budget.

#2561
That sounds like normal temperatures? GPU target temperature is usually 70-85°C and CPUs start throttling at >90°C.
Did you expect them to be cooler than your room at idle?

I know CPU/GPU temps are normal, but the mobo seems higher than I would expect. Ambient temps in my room are about 20-25c. My old build's mobo temp is about 35c at idle with similar cpu/gpu temps. Mostly just didn't expect the mobo temps to be ~15c higher going from ATX to mATX, but if that's normal then I don't have a problem.

Actual mobo/chipset temp and not just CPU package temp? Correct temp? Because most mobo sensors just report garbage.
Tubes in the way and radiator on top pulling air away are probably fucking up the airflow.
Low rpm 200mm fan is also never going to push in as much air as 1x140mm + 2x120mm are trying to push out, even if they were running at the same rpm.
Take out the 200mm and put the radiator in front, see what happens.

#2565
Would you benefit from more cores?
If you do and already bought the 7700K you fucked up since there were already better options. Also the mobo won't be compatible.
If you didn't buy it then you can just wait and get a cheaper Coffee Lake CPU with fewer cores/threads. Prices for i3/i5/i7 stay basically the same (e.g. 359$ for the 8700K vs 350$ for the 7700K) but i7s went from 4C/8T to 6C/12T, i5s from 4C/4T to 6C/6T and i3s from 2C/4T to 4C/4T.
If you don't benefit from more cores and already bought it then no, 0.2 GHz higher turbo but lower baseclock are not an upgrade.
If you haven't bought it then wait and get a Coffee Lake i3 or i5 and save some money.

Hmm, I did some reading up and from what I gather running both a TN (144hz) and IPS (better colours) seems like the best option for me :) Also think G-Sync would be worth getting since I've had headaches from screen tearing before.

Thanks again :) I'll probably be building this 21/22 Oct

Ok, what about ULMB/Lightboost/Strobing? You can't use it at the same time as G-Sync/FreeSync though.
If you don't need that then FreeSync monitor + AMD GPU is going to be cheaper, otherwise probably G-Sync monitor (with ULMB) + nVidia GPU.

Any news on Threadripper prices? The 1920X costs the same as an i7-7900X, even though it's 200 USD cheaper, so it's not really worth it when you can get an 8 core RyZen for less than half the price.

1700 + cooler for overclocking, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 4TB HDD, RX 580 or somethng like that, FreeSync monitor and even a nice IPS monitor (e.g. Dell U2415) look doable though.

I don't think I'll need ULMB/Lightboost/Strobing. Looking at the Threadripper again, maybe the FreeSync option would be easier to fit into the budget :b

yeap, 1950X is priced at:

- $2,431 with ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme mobo
- $2,130 with Gigabyte X399 Aorus Gaming 7 mobo
Any news on Threadripper prices? The 1920X costs the same as an i7-7900X, even though it's 200 USD cheaper, so it's not really worth it when you can get an 8 core RyZen for less than half the price.
yeap, 1950X is priced at:
- $1,589 alone
- $2,092 with ASUS Prime X399-A mobo
- $2,431 with ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme mobo
- $2,130 with Gigabyte X399 Aorus Gaming 7 mobo

and 1920X is priced at:
- $1,279 alone
- $1,783 with ASUS Prime X399-A mobo
-$2,121 with ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme mobo
-$1,820 with Gigabyte X399 Aorus Gaming 7 mobo

Here's the full price list from the store I might be buying the CPU from :)

Cool :D I'm really new to this so I'll build whatever you recommend me to :)

yo setsul, my budget is roughly around 250€. Is it possible to build a decent computer with it? Doesn't have to run new games at the highest graphic settings obviously, especially because I'm mostly playing TF2 and CS:GO. ty in advance

I'm considering getting a new motherboard and CPU because I think this motherboard is biting the dust (usb ports seem to be fucked). I would prefer overclocking and multithreading.

Budget would preferably be around $500, but I might be willing to go up to 1k (NZ dollars). Not against buying from overseas for cheaper prices. I may buy second hand in the end because I don't want to spend too much. Also, is there anything coming out I should be waiting for?

Depends on what you consider decent.
I'd look for used parts though so you can at least get a decent CPU.

looking to save money on this build, don't have a a solid budget, but wanna go sub $1,000 (including monitor and keyboard) since it's my first build. planning on using it for gaming, art, and music stuff.

How well do the 8th gen i7 flagships fare against Ryzen 1700 for productivity tasks? 8700K looks good if overclocked.

Should be more or less equal, depending on the program, but we have to wait for reviews.
Keep in mind though that the 1700 is quite a bit cheaper by itself and overclocking doesn't cost extra like for the 8700K.
The release already caused a nice price drop for Ryzen, but Coffee Lake is only the better option if you need the single threaded performance.

Hey dudes, my bro is looking to build a pc, budget is like ~$2.5k AUD.
Doesn't do editing or anything of that sort, just wants a beast ass PC to run like dota/ARK/pubg etc
- Pre sure he's already set on a benQ XL2720 monitor, open to suggestions though (not included in 2.5k budget)
- For the new intel CPU's, its about a month until he gets home so can wait for benchmarks etc. Is it worth getting just an i5?

thanks :)

Paging Setsul.

Building a PC for a friend, not sure about the parts because I'm not up to date with Ryzen. In fact, I don't really know if it's good for gaming at all. 1000-1500€, gaming build. Currently, he's on 1080p but probably looking to upgrade either to high res IPS or 144 1080p (not in budget), so should be able to run everything current and near future at 1440p 60 / 1080 120 at least (4k unlikely but possible). Probably upgrading again when VR gets big so it doesn't need to be completely VR proof yet, but probably a good mobo makes sense, if xfire/sli ever gets good in the future.

I'm thinking something like 7700K or Ryzen 7 1700 if Ryzen is good, 3rd party GTX 1080, MSI - X370 (currently cheap on newegg), 16GB of some DDR4, some 256 SSD, some 5TB HDD, some 600 Watt PSU, good air cooler and case.

If this is reasonable, pls help with the details, I haven't built a PC in years and don't know what's good in terms of RAM, Mobos etc.

If not, pls destroy my build and give a better one, thAnkSMr Setsul!

In my opinion, Ryzen isnt optimal for gaming yet. Games dont get full use of all cores so ryzen ends up being most noticeable with browsing, rendering, and streaming.

I think i5 is plenty to get good numbers and visuals in any game. a 1060 or 1070 is best price/performance ratio but if your friend really needs to have the extra frames from a 1080, go ahead and drop the extra $$$. The motherboard is plenty for someone who doesnt know much about computers, it has enough ports and can overclock an i5.

Resolution/size/features for the monitor?
ARK/Dota would be GPU limited and PUBG doesn't runs like shit anyway so he could away with an i3, now that they got 4 cores. i7 would definitely overkill, I'd just wait and see how it works out with the budget, but probably an i5.
Overclocking yes/no?

#2579
When is he going to build?
Overclocking yes/no?
MSI - X370 is not a mobo. That's a manufacturer and a chipset. Also why would you order from newegg with a budget in €?
Don't need a 600W PSU, just a good PSU.
There's not much point in 8 cores / 16 threads for gaming. New 4c/4t i3s should be much cheaper and faster, 6c/6t i5 at most.
XFire/SLI used to be ok-ish and will never be good again. SFR is way too much work, AFR is basically a gimmick but still wasted effort because why even bother when you can force your customers to buy a new faster GPU? Old used GPUs being added later doesn't make them any money and people buying two GPUs instead of one that's more than twice as expensive isn't good for them either. For those that would've bought 4 600$ GPUs for 4-way SLI you just support 2-way SLI on the high end GPUs and disable it for all others and make the fastest GPU a 1200$ Titan. More profit, less effort.

Please no 212 Evo.
Coffee Lake has been released, Kaby Lake recommendations make no sense at all.

#2581
It hasn't even been half a day since launch. Before that shops weren't even technically allowed to list it. We'll see how bad or good the supply situation is tomorrow. Launch prices are inflated anyway, so unless you have to buy right now I'd wait anyway.
