as long as they see that you made some effort to learn some french (like just say bonjour instead of hello and maybe some common phrases) people usually won't hate you

I've stayed in france for a month, as an american who speaks practically no french.

I loved it, as long as you don't act like a stereotypical dumb tourist, no one seemed hostile. The biggest issue is that they have a lot of social cues and strange things with food that will go over your head and you'll probably manage to offend everyone you're eating with a couple of times.

edit: also from what i've seen their mass transit is better and much cleaner than ours (the tube in London and the TGV in france were both awesome), but the euros really haven't figured out how to make decent showers so be warned

This. My dad has traveled abroad a lot to countries where English wasn't primarily spoken and his biggest tip to me was always to learn basic phrases (hello, thank you, etc) and make an attempt at speaking the language. People will be much more willing to help you than if you didn't make any attempt at all.

Yup. As someone who arrived here last year, I did this since the beginning when my french was more terrible than it is nowadays and I've never had any problem with people being unfriendly by just saying "Bonjour" and then "Pouvez-vous parler anglais ?", even when I needed some information in Paris.

The frenchies are cool, just respect their politeness culture.
