You're legitimately going to spend more on a single SSD than on the CPU?
You want to drop 500 bucks on an overclockable CPU and mobo, but 19$ on a cooler? And then you somehow need 11$ thermal paste for it?
Then add a 750W PSU for a 400W build.

And you have an inkling that it's not the best value for money if you only want to play light games?
No shit, sherlock.

So did you get the SSD anyway? Or back to the drawing board?

Hey Setsul I have a friend interested in doing a build with similar usage requirements to the one you posted here:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/CCTfGf

However, he needs to be able to afford a monitor, OS, and peripherals within the thousand dollar budget. He thinks he'll have to go with the 6 core Ryzen, and maybe downgrade to a 120GB SSD. I also think his choice of the 1060 might be excessive for light gaming and any CAD he does. His computer probably needs to cost around 800-850.

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/JohnnyV543/saved/sKVP6h

Do you have any suggestions for a 1080p monitor above 20 inches, prioritizing colors and image to speed? And any suggestions for cheap but quality keyboards and mice?

Thanks

Wouldn't cheap out on the SSD too much.
Define light gaming, RX 460 / 560 might be enough (460 = 1050 Ti -25%).

ECC yes/no?
Overclocking yes/no?

Used office monitors are cheap/free, could try that. With that an 8 core might be possible.

He could go mATX, mostly for the size, doesn't make much of a difference in terms of price.

Some minor changes/suggestions.

He doesn't need ECC, and he wont overclock it it will raise the price more than like 20 bucks.

He has looked at a lot of used monitors in the area and doesn't really like the selection.

Thanks for responding so quickly, I'll send this to him and we can look more for a monitor

It would be great to build pc that could do some really good job on 3D rendering (Sketchup, Lumion and 3D software) + other programs witch needs CPU, like AutoCAD and etc. So i think it should have good CPU and GPU
Budget ~1000€
OC: No
I have monitor and other accessories, so all budget into PC
Thanks guys!

ECC yes/no?
CUDA yes/no?
When? SKL-X and Zen with even more cores coming soon-ish. Not sure what that'll do to the prices.

Well do you think you'll need CUDA?
Also some sort of performance guideline, either for CPU or GPU, ideally both, would be useful.

The programs that will be used on this cumputer are using GPU/CPU like 50%/50%. Can't really tell.
I am not sure if those programs will use advantage of CUDA as well, can't you just pick hardware somewhere in the middle that has the best option?

Thank you.

First of all it's not 50/50. Both are used at the same time, can't replace one with the other.
Secondly I have no frame of reference so the middle of what would it be?

I could look up which programs can/do use CUDA and for which functions and then list them and ask you whether or not you'll use them but honestly, put in some effort yourself.

This computer is for my friend, and I'm being just a tunnel between posts.

So basically he did some research and this is what he found:

Yes, CUDA is a big plus since some programs that are gonna be used on that computer are using CUDA.
He also did some research and found that not all the programs are using multi-core rendering and according to him it's better to have a CPU with a higher frequency than with more cores (so I guess Intel wins against AMD Ryzen).

Not all, but some do and I'm pretty sure some actually need multiple cores to get decent performance.
So I still need some sort of guideline for either CPU or GPU performance or both.
Unless of course he thinks 2 cores are enough.

Coming from a 560ti, basically just want a GPU upgrade so I can use shadowplay. Any recommendations? Current CPU is an i5-2500k I think if that matters.

I don't know what a shadowplay is, but regarding gpu upgrade. depends on your budget. for 200 dollars, you can get something like an rx580 providing you have the psu, since its quite power hungry, but it's the best price/performance graphics card on the market as of right now, and spending more than 200 dollars after that is spending much more for less value. Also a big stepup from the 560 ti.

Shadowplay is an nvidia feature where you can clip the last X seconds of gameplay, but if there isn't an nvidia card for a reasonable price I'd probably just go with that.

How much of an upgrade?
Budget?
Also AMD GPUs can do the same, it's just not called Shadowplay because trademark.

#2296
You are aware that the 560 Ti's TDP is higher than the RX 580's?
Also best price/performance is the 570.

I was merely trying to suggest that maybe your life would be easier if you tried to answer the questions directed at you instead of trying to comment on something directed at someone else and realising that you have no idea what it means.

edit: ram is a lot more expensive than I thought. I thought the prices went down considerably since the last time i went shopping for parts (~3+ years ago)
i have an msi z77a-g45 mobo

Looking for a good price for ddr3 ram (16gb 2x8) I tried newegg but I'm pretty out of the loop so I'm not sure where the best deals are. I'm on the east coast if that matters.
Also I'm looking for a HDD (1TB preferred, can settle for a good priced 500-750GB 7200rpm+)
Is it worth investing into an SSD to put your games on? I don't want to buy one if it's only going to be useful for boot times. If it was a huge difference in performance for a game like BDO or something, then I might go for it. Thanmks

Prices went down at the end of 2012 and the end of 2015. Before that, between that and after that they were at the same level as the are now.

2x8GB will cost you 100$, that's the way it is.

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/Jjp323/toshiba-internal-hard-drive-hdwd110xzsta
or
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/44Gj4D/seagate-barracuda-1tb-35-7200rpm-internal-hard-drive-st1000dm010
whichever is cheaper in the shop of your choice.

SSDs reduce boot/load times. You won't get more fps.

So what's the general consensus on Ryzen vs Intel?

Also looking to build a new desktop soon. Budget is around $2000 give or take only need a monitor (time to get off o60 Hz). I want to be able to play games such as Battlefield 4, Far Cry 4, Tom Clancy Games, etc and be able to get 120/144 fps without drops at medium settings or lower (don't really care about high/ultra settings). None of the parts from my current computer are reusable, I also do not need Windows since I already have a key.

Your help is greatly appreciated Setsul :D

Eyy I'm not setsul and may not be right, but I think he would say similar things, at this point It's good to just wait for vega, since amd has had a pattern of releasing of their gpu a month after their announcement at computex. dat fancy new HBM2 technology to replace gddr5. Also If you want to do streaming and editing work, ryzen offers price to performance that Intel is not competing with at this point in time offering 8 cores 16 threads for just 300 dollars. since you have a hefty budget and if you only care about purely gaming, the 7700k is what you want.

I stopped paying attention to new computer part releases a while ago. I stream sometimes but that's not my primary goal. I mainly want a computer that will last a while and I won't have to upgrade in a year. I'll check around some more and see if Ryzen or intel can better suit my needs as well.

Thanks for the input

FWIW, I just built a PC recently: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/dcVknn

And I just tested out some streaming using primarily default settings: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/147246987

Runs like a dream, stream looks pretty darn sharp and smooth. For me, i7 seems more than adequate, despite having fewer cores than the ryzen (which I also heavily considered).

[quote=Max_]So what's the general consensus on Ryzen vs Intel?

Also looking to build a new desktop soon. Budget is around $2000 give or take only need a monitor (time to get off o60 Hz). I want to be able to play games such as Battlefield 4, Far Cry 4, Tom Clancy Games, etc and be able to get 120/144 fps without drops at medium settings or lower (don't really care about high/ultra settings). None of the parts from my current computer are reusable, I also do not need Windows since I already have a key.

It's complicated

How soon?
New CPUs with even more cores coming.
New GPUs coming.

To be honest I don't think you'll have to spend 2000$ to get 144fps on medium.
Are we talking 1080p?

HBM2 vs GDDR is complicated.
GDDR5X and in the future GDDR6 are replacing GDDR5.

Rest is correct.

Basically you'll get about twice the threads at the same price with Ryzen. Streaming loves threads.
Now at the low end for each category (in terms of cores/threads) you'll also get higher single threaded performance (e.g. i5-7400 vs R5 1500X), but at the high end Ryzen will usually move up already in terms of cores/threads, but not quite reach the single threaded performance (e.g, i5-7600K vs R5 1600X, i5 is faster ST even on stock clocks, even more when OC'd but the 1600X got 3 times the threads).
So for any game/program that does scale with cores Ryzen is usually the better choice.

If we're just talking maximum single threaded performance with virtually unlimited budget then you should get an i7-7700K and overclock it. But looking at benchmarks it doesn't seem like you'll need that.

Yeah, but if 4 cores / 8 threads are adequate for streaming then why would you want to pay 350$ instead of 190$ for it?
Then again you also spent >200$ on an overlocking mobo and got a 25$ cooler, so maybe your goal had nothing to do with either price or performance.

My father and brother's friend both want to build computers. Both want to build now and already have peripherals and monitors. Both want computers that will be fast for general use, web browsing and so on.

Father:

Will use it for development work, needs to run Visual Studio and SQL Server well. Also does some video and audio encoding. Doesn't play video games. Needs to drive two monitors, one 3840 x 2160 and one 2560 x 1440. Wants at least 16 GiB of RAM, the OS on an SSD and at least 4 TiB of storage. Wants a built in SD card reader.

Also specified he doesn't want the computer to be much larger than a standard prebuilt desktop.

Budget is £800 including Windows license, though would be happy to spend less. Doesn't want to overclock.

Brother's friend:

Will use it for gaming, mainly Ark: Survival Evolved, plus generic modern AAA titles. Wants to get good frames at maximum settings at 1920 x 1080. Computer needs to drive two 1920 x 1080 monitors but only one will be used for games. Wants the OS on an SSD and wants at least 1 TiB of storage.

Budget is £1300 including Windows license, though would be happy to spend less. Doesn't want to overclock.

Thanks for any help you can give
