It's about time for a promod

mods are great, see how much control ESEA has regarding ingame settings. We wanted those too in ETF2L, since it would've eliminated the most annoying part of the site: uploading status screenshots as evidence.

Sadly we looked at things and figured out a huge flaw in this, it requires external plugins that the game relies on. Since community leagues don't have the money to hire someone that can maintain this, it means it's a liability to the competitive scene.
Once community / promod plugins break, and the original maintainer quits the game, who is responsible for updating it? How can we guarantee continuity when he can't update it because Valve broke something permanently?

I don't know how much a promod would affect attaining new players, but I'd rather have the choice in using a promod if I want, as opposed to not even have one.

Sourcemod is unlikely to go anywhere any time soon and has an open source release requirement for plugins iirc. But I don't think most people are thinking of just some server plugins when they think of a promod, more like a new game client.

It really depends on what we need to do to fix the problems we have - if we can do it with a server plugin, that would be ideal, but I'm not well versed in the limitations of such a thing.

Would promod be more like project m than fastermelee then to put it in other terms?
One completely changed the mechanics of a game in the image of the competitive community and the other was a small but nice improvememnt on the already considered competitively balanced game

Promod would mean no ESEA, no Faceit, no featured streams etc.
B4nny probably wouldn't switch to promod even if it had 3 times the balanced unlocks, and consequently none of the top teams would, presumably.

Even if somebody decided they were going to do this, it would still take months to make. Dont think theres any point in it

whats wrong with the tf2 we have now. Sure we could do a lot with more dev support but we can still play 6s just fine.

jtsendremove stupid pub unlocks
remove pyro
remove heavy
remove engineer
remove spy
As much as I don't enjoy playing against those classes doing so would further remove the players who are currently playing the game now casually away from touching competitive.
At the end of the day those players are what make up those steam stats keeping us up there.
(And yes, I know that doesn't make the competitive community bigger it just gives us immediate options and advertisement of our competitive format though the twitch stuff and matches being or at one point were announced in world wide chat.) Although making it so those players understand why and when they can play say a class like spy is viable in the format we have right now would be immensely better.

i'm talking about a promode. the people who play casually wouldn't enjoy a promode anyway. this game has too many stupid gimmicks that pander to idiots who are bad at videogames

AdnurakTideTF2I think what TF2 really needs at this point is a spiritual successor.
Maybe when source 2 finally comes out.
I'm inclined to agree. These days the way I think about it is: Overwatch is the League of Legends to our DotA, now we're just waiting on our own Dota 2.

it's never going to happen

tf2 has no strategic depth
comparison between tf2 and overwatch is honestly retarded tf2s skill comes almost entirely from mechanics whereas overwatch internationally dumbed down some mechanics to allow other components of skill to thrive, granted a lot of it was probably just to bring in more casual players who don't want to learn nuanced mechanics like bunny hopping, rocket jumping, surfing, and air strafing.
I enjoy those mechanics too, but the problem with them is there almost secrets to alot of new players, people have literally made it to invite without knowing what ctapping i don't think new players want to be hindered because they don't know about "secret mechanics". So the options are remove them entirely or try to compose lengthy ingame tutorials to teach people the mechanics they chose option one and i can understand why.

i propose that anybody competent enough at game dev that is also committed to tf2 take a step up and apply for a position with valve that would allow you to actually work on the game. we need inside people who understand what the competitive side is like if we want tf2 game dev to seriously consider it/know how to make things work.

send is the only person who has responded to me
toads did what everyone seems to do blame valve for not supporting competitive earlier which isnt surprising at all because tf2 wasn't designed with competitive in mind
now that valve is trying to support comp they;re doing a pretty bad job i'll agree, but my point is the community was killing itself before valve even came along the game mode and community just haven't attracted players
people have known about comp when i first started playing like 5 or 6 years ago before i even started playing i knew about comp, but it didnt seem appealing alll the pubbers i talked to knew about comp they tried it and didnt like it and the few who did like it didn't really like 6s they liked HL
why do you expect valve to put so much effort into helping comp to thrive when they're not really evidence to suggest it will grow to the size of dota or cs it would seem a lot more profitable for them to just continue appealing to pubbers who like the "memes" because they have to invest less money and they're a guaranteed payout
and the comp community isn't a large portion of the games playerbase i the invite finals get like 1k viewers thats 2 percent of the tf2 community turning up for the biggest match of the season

1. you're not an elitist for believing your game should be skill-based
2. those mechanics don't have to be hidden if there was a proper fucking tutorial or if competitive wasn't obscure as fuck
3. he probably is better and smarter when it comes to tf2 than most of the playerbase but regardless of that there's nothing that implies that he is better than anyone else, he just wants the game to have a high skill ceiling. i want the game not to be pandered towards bad players, and i could probably be beaten by every player on this thread
