i saw them live in NY and they were really pretentious/ironic/acted like they didnt wanna be there. mike was making fun of people for using their cell phones to take photos. as if the resurfacing of older emo music thanks to the internet has personally bothered him. sorry that your mediocre band from over a decade ago is making you money again, bro.

that being said theyre pretty boring. im prepared to be as disappointed as Braids new release a few years ago (Braid is one of my all time favorites in the 90s emo category and much more worth listening to than AF imo). theres something about 30/40 year old dudes trying to re-energize this vibe they made when they were teens/young 20s, idk. reminds me of blink 182 still cashing in on their teen pop songs despite being full grown men. im not bashing, im just not impressed. theres many other bands that do it better nowadays and are still young. AF is just cashing in on their popularity.

for the record i enjoyed AF's self titled greatly in my highschool years, its just kinda stale now. maybe im just not into it. definitely cool when you discover it. replay value is lacking.

five years ago this probably really would have excited me because I was 17 then, but now it just seems like a cash-in. especially after the years-too-late mass-market commodification of "emo revival" has already been in full-force from pitchfork and NPR for at least a couple years. I'm not excited by any new emo bands by this point, much less some 30-year-olds still singing about high school pain and ex-girlfriends.

American Football's self-titled stands up as one of the strongest and most artistic entries in a tired and cliche-driven genre, but it's time to put this shit to rest.

empire! empire! was tight as fuck when i saw them and keith is the absolute sweetest dude. runs Count Your Lucky Stars record label too. he signed a shirt for me that i bought for my friend, who sometime later got me my own keith-signed tshirt after keith crashed at his house one night.
