Does mge actually help?

I honestly hate mge. I don't believe it is actually helping my game. I am always looking for ways to get better, and a bunch of people have told me that mge is a good way to practice dm and such. I have played dm servers, they are eh. Pubs don't really get you better. So I have been mgeing a lot and I don't enjoy it at all and I feel it is not helping. I just get way to competitive and angry when someone beats me. And its never really a good game, I usually just play against mge lords and I get less than 5 points or I play agains someone with 200 hours and they get 0 points. Does anyone have any other recommendations for getting better at the game? besides lobbies, mge, and dm servers.

If it doesn't help you, it doesn't help.

If it does help you, it does help.

Different things work for different people.

pugs are always a good way to get better
also to practice your aim you can go onto bot maps like tr_newbots and tr_walkway and tr_aim or whatever you prefer
but also public mge is awful and you should only mge friends to really improve
also try not to tilt dude, its just mge and its just for learning, competitive spirit is good but you gotta stay level man

DishSoap try not to tilt dude

yeah I have been working on that, I just get fucking tilted when people stand on the sheet metal on spire or counter jump your jump or some shit like that. But yes, it is just mge and I need to learn to relax.

u high bruh? he wants to know if it is helping him.

anyways mge brought me from trashcan that everyone laughed at and flamed in pugs to a someone that could hang. It also helps because people get mad and tell me to kill myself when i beat them so people in pugs didnt seem so bad any more.

If you're especially bothered about score or w/e and have your own server, you can play with a 2v2 cfg so that there's no score at all.

yea playing with a buddy on a 2v2 server is probably the best case scenario mge

- you'll play longer without even realizing it

- you'll likely rarely be frustrated as long as your playing someone who's not way better or worse than you

- you're both subconsciously playing way less gay since you're not trying to win

years ago me and hassassin mge'd on a 2v2 server for like 3 hours straight no breaks only soldier badlands mid and didn't even realize it

honestly grinding DM has helped me become way more consistent in my aim, not necessarily better, but different things work for different people

whenever I play MGE it's only with my friends and yeah, having the 2v2 config really helps

I turn off both ingame sound and the MGE HUD and just focus on hitting shots instead of trying to win at all costs. (maybe leave the ingame sound on if you're a soldier main. :D)

play with a friend that is better than you, who can strafe, aim, and doesn't play like a cunt (counterjumps, etc), big plus if he can play different classes to help you train against every dm class

you'll get much better, because you'll have to surpass yourself to beat him, but you'll have fun while doing it, because you wont be in a public mge against some mge shitlord that plays like a twat
that's how i got better, because dm does not work for me at all

i also blast music until i barely hear the game and change arena regularly, helps to grind for hours without getting bored

if you hate every second of it then it's probably not worth putting the time and effort into, even if it does help.

I've only ever enjoyed MGE but I've also never played against strangers in MGE. Maybe try only playing with some buddies around your skill level? I don't mind even mind getting 20-5'd every now and then if it's by someone who makes me laugh and isn't an asshole.

_vittoHow do you disable the mge hud? And why would you disable sound?

I I think /hud or !hud will turn off the mge hud

as for turning off sound the guy who mentioned it might have a different reason but for me it felt like turning off sound made me more focused on just my aim so if I was ever getting frustrated in dm/mge about someone/something id just shut off my sound and even if it was just placebo it helped me stop thinking about that thing/person and just focus on my aim

As a washed up open mge lord:

When i played more mge, i could win more 1v1s and i was a bigger threat in an uber. At the same time my team would play around me DMing an uber and we'd get fucked. I hit a wall in mid open where people would just shoot me and my dm didn't matter. I think mge will help, especially if youre a newer player, but you do hit a wall where your dm is better than the rest of your gameplay and more mge doesnt do anythinf useful.

Conversely, i dont think you can get so much smarter than dm-y that it becomes a problem. Focusing on gamesense and scrimming might make you weaker in specific 1v1s, but it wont matter if youre just out thinking everyone else.

this is a great way to improve at anything tbh. If you can't have fun when you're losing, you'll never improve. Its why having the right people on your team is so important

hitting your shots is definitely important for sure, however the way you get good at hitting your shots is entirely different from person to person

its like how some people jump rather than surf for example, they just have different ways of practicing.

but for me personally i played a ton of mge, i guess i always thought it was a great way to improve dm espescially if you have someone realllly good to play against you can improve a lot like that, playing against players who would own me i thought was great because i felt like i honestly improved a ton by playing against them. i would also play against friends who are mge players for hours on end and it was honestly soo much fun man just clicking man, but thats just me.

from reading your posts and this might sound harsh my man. you honestly just sound reallyyyy impatient. it takes awhile to grow into an amazing player, you need to put in the effort to and you will be rewarded if you grind long enough.
the best advice i could give you is to learn to like losing, with every loss you grow into an ever better player until eventually you start winning.

i resonate with ur post so much though, i was an angry little shit when i played mge when i lost to anyone i would throw a fucking fit until i had a fucking reality check after i learned a little humility through people in this community and learned to enjoy losing because it helped me grow so much.

you just sound so easily discouraged, so try to find a way to have fun with it (people suggested playing with friends) get over yourself and improve your work ethic.

good luck man!

Will it help you improve? Well, that depends. Every person is different. Half a year ago I played MGE religiously but ultimately I came to the decision that it was doing more harm to me than good. For the most part MGE (despite its intended purpose) is played more-so like a competition rather than as a form of practice by a good portion of people. A lot of people behave in ways that generally benefit them in the short run (ie: within the context of winning the specific fight at hand with controlled variables like health back on the next life and knowing there's nothing else to shoot at you) rather than long term.

Ultimately I came to the decision that it wasn't really helping me get any better but just helping me learn how to beat more people in mge. Any time I found myself in an in game 1v1 I'd get shat on because people were playing differently (ie: not trying to gay up their movement or hide at the end of the map and spam). I decided to quit playing it and go play DM instead. The environment is a bit more realistic and if you still like taking 1v1s, there's nothing stopping you from trying to take micro 1v1s with everyone anyways, but now with the added pressure of killing someone quickly so you don't get shot in the back. With that being said, these two methods of practice don't even compare to pugs and scrims.

If you're not enjoying MGE then stop playing it. Since you seem to dislike DM too I would definitely suggest finding a pug group and becoming a regular. They're really fun and you can put hours of practice into them without even realizing it, not to mention they train more than just your aim and movement.

There is absolutely no way mge doesn't doesn't help your actual aim and understanding of movement, especially as a new player. However, youll get to a point where youll realize just because you beat somebody in mge doesn't mean you can 1v1 them in real games the same, because mge is really forced. Despite this, mge is always helpful for a new player; the most important thing you should get from it is an understanding of movement. on top of that, it's just good practice for aiming.

There are plenty of invite players who have never really mge'd much though, but then again, I've seen an invite player who was known for their dm be that "bad" at mge. It's just a useful tool if you can find some joy in it when playing with friends.

when u die once in mge don't immediately tilt out of ur mind and start playing dumb

even when i'd ask friends a lot better than me to play against me, knowing i'd lose, i'd still start tilting super hard and stop thinking completely and rq after like 3-4 rounds, result was that i was dying from having shit movement and i'd stop thinking about movement and sort of progressively played worse and worse

find people you can go like even with and don't play gay and make sure you're actually thinking about how you're dying and what you're doing wrong instead of grinding it out because "other people grind mge and they're good"

put a sticky note in the top left corner so you have a harder time getting mad at MGE
disable chat
disable the killfeed
put some tv or something on the other monitor

zen out for a few hours a day and be a god at 1v1s
