tftv twitch reruns?

you know how the esl_csgo twitch channel plays reruns of old cs casts and tournaments and shit like that like right now they're streaming a cs 1.6 cast from 2010 lol

can the tftv twitch do that too like it'd be cool to always have something running there like old casts and stuff like that, it'd be neat to drop in and watch casts and stuff i haven't seen before like vods of really old seasons

like i get i can watch vods but i don't really know what i want to watch and just having reruns playing when there isn't a cast happening would be pretty neat

also this would pretty much always be up on the in game stream list which would bring attention to the channel all the time

they did a rerun of i49 as i52 hype but iirc they only really did the first day

would be cool but remember tftv doesnt have a whole studio like ESL does, its just regular people at home doing camerawork.

yeah i get that the budget is probably super limited but how much resources would it use to replay vods? i've never streamed so i don't actually know

there's so much old casts whether it be like old highlander or regular invite/prem matches that people have probably never seen or won't seek out the vod and it kind of seems like a waste to let them go unwatched

basically if tftv wanted to do this it would require one person to leave his computer on with like a playlist of matches playing one after the other. Extremely demanding on bandwidth and not exactly worth the time, especially not to run it as frequently as ESL currently does. ESL is also still advertising their own sponsors and getting paid for it, tftv's sponsors aren't exactly as prestigious as ESL's

I do think it would be good to hype for events though. Before every iSeries, replay the matches from the previous one? Sure!

that would be cool as fuck, especially if dreamhack events become more of a regular thing

GXL, gamers assembly?, dreamhack, iseries could have like an extra few days of hype reruns before the actual event and that'd be pretty cool

It's not hard to just stream a VOD, I have most of everything I've streamed going back to about season 20. The problem is you need a machine dedicated to just streaming that content because if it's streaming you can't really do anything else with it that would make any noise that would show on the stream and you'd be dedicating around 4mb/s of upload to the task as well as a decent amount of cpu usage that contributes to power bills when it's running 24/7. There's also the issue of stopping the stream when it comes to live casts. Easy enough in a studio but if it's running off some guy's PC in his house and he's not in a position to be able to do it then you're shit out of luck.

Twitch have implemented a feature called playlists (I think it's still in beta) where you can pick a playlist of old twitch vods to play back. Our problem is a lot of these get muted and we'd have to highlight them every time to get the right portion of a cast.

It's a lot of work when you're a bunch of people doing it as a hobby. The best we can get at the moment is automated hosting of other twitch channels to make sure there's always some content at http://twitch.tv/teamfortresstv

If copyrighted music is detected in the VOD a 30 minute segment is muted around the music which usually covers a significant portion of the start/end of the cast

I would assume all that's needed is a dedicated streaming PC and a program to play videos in, and possibly shuffle them (VLC can randomly play videos, but it randomly selects a video each time rather than just shuffling the playlist. This may not be the best idea, but a plugin or another program would work).

Also, it would be a great idea to go back and edit the videos to remove delays and pauses, and also for time. The replays should be on a consistent time schedule so they don't get cut off by live content. However, this doesn't have to be done immediately or at all, it's just a suggestion.

Now, if it needs to be seamless, then you need to have a studio. It can't be seamless using multiple computers, at least not with OBS.

Even if it were just a few hours a week instead of 24/7 it'd still be cool. Could possibly do a "This Day in Comp TF2 History" thing and rerun a VOD from a match that was played exactly 3-4-5-etc. years ago, even if just on nights when there's no live matches scheduled to be streamed.

Re-evaluating VODs/old games is a lot of fun, especially with live chat. There's nothing worse than seeing a play happen that both the casters and chat missed but you can't say anything cuz it's in the past (like I just saw an Invite scout die to a roller last week in a streamed match and no one caught it).

Who is going to provide (at minimum) $5-600 for this computer?

Who is going to spend the tens of hours required to edit hundreds of hours of VODs? Who is going to spend the time making sure the schedule is adhered to when they might not be at the PC when required?

Really good points, gonna respond to them.

1. Yes, a dedicated streaming PC is a must, as is the PC being located in a place where there's a lot of upload bandwidth available (anyone here have Google Fiber?) and doesn't mind having high electricity bills. So while this way could happen, it doesn't seem likely. Probably should just wait to see if we can get to the point where TFTV or another casting org can get to the point where there could be a studio to handle all of this (not likely unless comp sees a massive boost after MM).

2. Didn't know about this! This is a really good idea. One way you could get around this is by doing manual replays. If a match is at least decent, it could be edited and manually replayed sometime in the next few days. I'd say later that day or the next day but I don't know how long it would take to edit the VOD. During the off-season, great old matches could be edited and replayed as well. As more and more VODs are replayed, you can build up a playlist of VODs and put it on repeat. VODs not being saved complicates this a little, but as long as it's done ASAP after the initial replay it should be good.

3. This sounds great on paper, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea. A pre-approved list of streamers could work, but then you get the problem of none of those streamers streaming at a certain time. Also, what if they switch to another game?

Good points. I was really only speaking theoretically. Obviously actual situations will require some (or a lot) of thinking.

If copyrighted music is detected in the VOD a 30 minute segment is muted around the music which usually covers a significant portion of the start/end of the cast

why don't you stop playing copyrighted muzak?

And I'm explaining why it isn't practical at the moment.

Would it be practical to have maybe a once-a-week replay of an old match? What about replays of old finals/LANs for hype (such as replaying matches from an old ESEA Final to hype an upcoming ESEA Final, or replaying i55 to hype up i58)?

Would it be possible to edit out pauses and delays, or would it still take a while even for a more limited selection of VODs? In my mind I'm envisioning just cutting off the sections that aren't needed, but it's probably much more complex than that.

Most non-copyrighted stuff is pretty boring and since we don't use the twitch VODs for anything (except for otential playlist usage) we don't mind the twitch VOD being muted when we have the raw OBS output to upload instead. It also means I can play frag movies before the stream starts which is a hell of a lot more interesting than listening to just music, copyrighted or otherwise.

Specific usages like that are definitely possible but it means making one PC mostly unusable for the duration of the replay. What would be replayed is the same as what we upload to youtube which is the cast in its entirety excluding the start/end music but including the pre- and post-game analysis and analysis between maps. Editing the VODs any further than that isn't useful because there isn't a neat point at which to cut them and you lose a lot of context.

Vegan_Meatwhy don't you stop playing copyrighted muzak?

I think tftv has a deal worked out with a production music library iirc, but ContentID is pretty overzealous and mutes stuff that is licensed sometimes.

If I'm wrong and it's always just copyrighted music anyway, perhaps it's worth considering switching to sources of Creative Commons or otherwise permissibly licensed music for videos that will be archived? There's a podcast dedicated to finding good CC-licensed music too if that helps, they always link their sources: http://www.amateurzen.us/

EnterimVegan_Meatwhy don't you stop playing copyrighted muzak?
I think tftv has a deal worked out with a production music library iirc, but ContentID is pretty overzealous and mutes stuff that is licensed sometimes.

If I'm wrong and it's always just copyrighted music anyway, perhaps it's worth considering switching to sources of Creative Commons or otherwise permissibly licensed music for videos that will be archived? There's a podcast dedicated to finding good CC-licensed music too if that helps, they always link their sources: http://www.amateurzen.us/

We have a deal with monstercat but we generally just use any music. There's no point in us switching to using specific libraries of "allowed" music when we have the raw OBS VOD to deal with. The only thing that would make us stop using any music is if twitch implemented muting live streams that were playing copyrighted music which isn't happening any time soon.

all the esea twitch vods are completely unmuted since i use royalty-free music (just in case my local copy gets corrupted for whatever reason, which has happened multiple times) and i can start clipping the online vods more if we start doing playlists. i'm not sure if we can get the same free use music thing going in eu casts (i can provide my playlist which is pretty large if needed) but that would make it really easy to just highlight matches and do reruns automatically.

DavidTheWinSpecific usages like that are definitely possible but it means making one PC mostly unusable for the duration of the replay. What would be replayed is the same as what we upload to youtube which is the cast in its entirety excluding the start/end music but including the pre- and post-game analysis and analysis between maps. Editing the VODs any further than that isn't useful because there isn't a neat point at which to cut them and you lose a lot of context.

Would you not be able to just pipe the audio using something like virtual audio cables? It'd obviously still be a burden on the cpu, but I don't see why it needs to make the computer "unusable for the duration of the replay".

they could do re-runs around match time if there's not any invite casts going on that night.
