Launching demos externally?

Hey, I'm wondering if it's possible to launch demos from outside the game, similar to connecting to servers using the steam browser protocol (eg, steam://connect/ip/pw -> steam://.../playdemo/test.dem). If there is a way to use steam://run/440 with launch options and have it work that would be best.

The closest I could find was the +playdemo command line option, but this only works if the game is not currently open.

I'd honestly expect a lot more demo functionality along with the competitive update, and this doesn't sound too far out of reach.

You could email Eric and ask for something along the lines of this, they seem to be listening to information about demos right now.

Are old demos forever gonna be not working? I can't watch any <2015 POVs it just doesn't load them.

Would've made a new thread but I think it's been asked before, and it ties in here as well.

Either find an old version of TF2 (by pirating probably) or try igmdb.org.

My knowledge on this is admittedly limited, but I am fairly sure the reason that old demos no longer work is because the network protocol changes. In order to play old demos, old engines would have to be bundled into the new one, greatly increasing the size of the binaries and probably opening up security vulnerabilities.

Maybe they could make a "demo viewer" beta version based on a pre-2015 version with all functions removed but playing demos? They did this same thing with CSGO for pre-2013 demos.
