sopsI can get up to 400+ fps in tf2 but my fps drops down to 80-90. Capping my fps doesn't help at all and it doesn't make aiming during frame drops more consistent.
My computer setup is this:
CPU: i7 2600k (not overclocked)
RAM: 8GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT 1GB
also my storage is fairly fast at 170mbs read/write.
TF2 is horribly optimized and it doesn't take a genius to tell that. A 9 year old game that gets constant updates should not run this badly, it's fine that tf2 uses the cpu more, but even top level cpus in average rigs can't keep up means something is wrong.
But hey you can buy a really expensive computer so you can run this game smoothly!

We almost got the same setup, I have a bit more ram(16gb) and a GT740 instead of the GT9500

With an i5 4690k @ 4.5ghz and 970, with an fps config on dx8 I can get between 200 and 1000.
If I don't use an fps config I dip below 100 sometimes.

I think the main problem is that tf2 is not seen as a competitive game, at least not in the same vein CS. If you think about, from a casual point of view, tf2's performance could be a lot worse. A lot of other games have significantly worse performance, but people don't get as upset over it because it's not a competitive game. Not that I'm trying to excuse TF2's poor performance, just food for thought.

i'm getting fps drops that come in sudden, intermittent waves, irrespective of map/situation. it's really weird and i can't think of what could be causing it other than poor optimization on valve's end.
i have an i7 4700. ~60% of the time it stays stable right on my max of 240. without cap it can go as high as 800-900. but for no apparent reason it will suddenly drop to 60-120 for a couple of minutes before going back up again. it's a real pain running at 120hz, completely ruins my aim and the fun of the game.
i've tried using a few different configs to no avail.

update number howevermany: still unsolved

Don't downscale your resolution to get more FPS if you have even a mildly good GPU. Since this game is CPU oriented and doesn't put much on the GPU, you're usually not going to get any FPS from downscaling.

edit: comanglia agrees with me im immortal

I built a new PC recently and my performance has been utterly incredible. Mainly due to the parts I imagine, but even while streaming and dx9 i get above 200 which makes me very very happy. I even got 1000 fps in ammomod the other day. I still use comanglia's config mainly because i'm too lazy to change all of my settings around.
CPU: i7-6700k
RAM: 16GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti

That is upscaling, not downscaling. Think of it this way: You render a frame at 1280x720 and you need to increase the amount of pixels from the original image to make it stretch across the entire screen at 1920x1080; you're upping the scale of the rendered frame to fit your monitor. Downscaling is when you render at a higher resolution than you're going to display the rendered frame at in order to increase the quality of the image.

Has this thread become the "post your system specs and average FPS" thread?

CPU: i7-4790K overclocked to 4.5 GHz.
RAM: 8 GB. Corsair Vengeance, soon to be 16 GB.
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 Reference Model (Great performance, but cooling sucks.)
FPS Config: Custom config generated using config.tf, high model and texture detail, no ragdolls, sprays, blood, gibs, and low particles.

Get about 180-200 on mids depending on the map, lowest I've seen dips in fights has been 160 or so.

Also, if you don't plan on overclocking, why buy a K-series Intel CPU? Just a waste of $10 or $20.

is a lenovo ideapad y510p (i7 4700mq, gt 750m (lol laptop)) seriously not adequate to run tf2 at a constant 120+? that seems bs.
if the answer is yes, what build fundamentals ought i to look at for a desktop? something that would ensure good, consistent performance with minimal overspending.

i'm not a tech guy i don't know shit i just want to shoot airrockets. the laptop was bought 2 years ago with gaming as a very minimal deciding factor, during a long hiatus from tf2.

i'm using a metabox laptop with an i7-4710mq with a gtx 850m and i only drop below 120 frames on really crowded pub servers. in 6s it's a comfortable 200+ (sometimes 250+ but it's a bit map dependent) and HL is 150+

idk if there's a huuuge difference between our setups but i don't have any problems

From your previous post you talk about intermittent fps drops...Given it's a laptop that could be an overheat issue. Make sure you have proper airflow, and cooling, and blow out the vents.. You may also want to consider capping the FPS so you're not pegging your CPU/GPU to the max all the time? I'm unsure if that will reduce CPU load...but you may want to test if you see improvement.
