decapkirbyIt wasn't until September when I figured out what looks best, and I thank Decap for being so helpful, despite his seemingly sour personality. I can't tell you what you should use except that you should use what you and your audience both enjoy. Though, I will give you an example of what I use.
How nice of you.

By the way this guide is incredibly outdated. It might have been okay in 2010. I don't have time to go into specifics but you should be making use of stuff like VDM files, srcdemo2, SFM, Adobe MPE etc.

pretty sure vdms are still broken

I'm not sure what I'm missing, but when I finish recording, stitch my images together in vdub with audio, match them, and export as avi, I get an extremely choppy video with completely broken audio.

Try redoing the vdub process and see if it is still choppy. If not, try recording in TF2 again.

I have done this multiple times to no avail. Just to make sure, when I'm recording in tf2 at 480fps, my host_timescale should be 0.001, and my host_framerate should be 480 correct?

Yes. Are you doing this through Lawena? Because those settings are already in place (timescale/framerate). If you're doing it manually, I don't believe you're missing out on any essential commands on the line.

I am using lawena and I've tried manually as well. One thing I noticed is that in vdub the preview wasn't rendering correctly either which I fixed by converting fps under frame rate conversion to whatever was under the parentheses in the source rate adjustment; however, the results were the same when I converted to an avi.

Not sure what could be causing that.

Yeah I'm having the exact same problem as Ed. Rendering it with lagarith doesn't change much either.

EDIT: nvm, I imported it into Sony Vegas and it worked fine in there.

Hey, Kirby thanks a lot, was curious if you have any tips on Free Hand Smoothing or if it's just hopelessly painful?

I'm on sony vegas 11. When I got to "video for windows" templates, select one, customise it, save it as a new one, and then render with it. it renders it as an avi, and when I got the MainConcept AVC/AAC(mp4) templates it doesn't give me the same settings as show in OP :(

I'll try it with the mainconcept template and see how it goes.

After encoding the file isn't found in the folder it's supposed to be (Desktop for me). I tried changing the output already, the file itself exists but if you open it it says it cant be found, and its size is 0 bytes. Help?

Note: The avi file itself works just fine.

Hey sorry for bumping this but im having a few problems uploading to youtube. The .mp4 file i get after encoding looks pretty nice on my computer but youtube keeps destroying the quality
Are there better options apart from h264 to encode?

h.264 is what you want for youtube. But about quality, im pretty sure they have a page that shows you what the optimal bitrate settings and stuff are (prolly link you when you upload the video)

hi. can someone help me with this? only place where it would make sense.

i want to render a clip so i open it up in lawena. i skip to the tick that i want and it closes my game. i've tried speeding it up to 600% and it crashes at like the 1300 tick mark.
but i open it in the regular game (non-lawena) and it runs fine.

do you guys have any ideas?

It's probably something in the graphics config lawena uses that's causing it to crash. Double check that mat_queue_mode is set to 0 and see if it still crashes.

everytime I launch lawena I get an error saying windows firewall is blocking javaw.exe so I can't update/dl the whole program. I unblocked it and even with firewall completely off I still got the same error. Is there somewhere I can just download the whole thing?

edit: found it thanks kirby

I know this post is pretty old, but for some reason the audio goes from being synced to not being synced". The longer the video file is, the more "not-synced" the audio gets. Is there any way to fix this? I record at 480 fps. Here's an example of me jumping on jump_beef: Your text to link here... After the first course the audio isn't synced anymore. Does it have anything to do with the framerate?

kirbySTEP THREE: VIRTUAL DUB
Once you have selected the first .tga, it will import the rest of the .tgas for that letter. Now click on Audio and choose Audio From Another File. The .wav files will be in the folder you chose to put the .tga files in. The audio files are also in alphabetical order. Once you've done that, click on Video then choose Frame Rate. Select Change so that video and audio durations match. This will make sure the video and the audio are synced together. In parenthesis, it will show what FPS the video/audio will be at once synced. It's normal if the number shown is a few FPS off.
